The basics were learned and then put into play. As Nov. 14 drew near, the tenseness and excite- ment grew. The mercury dropped considerably the day of the game, but that didn't stop either team. The junior team started the scoring by making the first touchdown. The seniors made a quick comeback by returning the kickoff for six points. The game continued with the juniors taking the final victory by a score of 20 to 14. During halftime, the Powder Puff King candidates were wheeled in by their escorts. Early predictions had it that the football team would not do so well during the season. Well, the team proved different, especially in their games against Wellston and Gallipolis. In both of these special league games, Logan came out on top within the last few seconds of the game. The game against Callipolis was won by a last second touchdown by John Specht, and the game against Wellston was won by a last second field goal by sophomore Jeff Smith Both games had every Logan fan on edge during the last couple of seconds. A great team, is what Coach Biggers said about the boys he coached this year. Coach feels that 100% effort and ability were given in each game and practice by each member of the football team, and that is why it was a great team. Top left: Specht plunges for winning touchdown! Coach Kemper said, “The season was dominated by tough defense and good ball control on offense. He also com- mented about the attitude of the players saying that their positive attitude and readiness for each game helped their win- ning of every game. “Desire, attitude, and pride dictated the kind of football our young men displayed, said Coach Kem- per. Athletics 23 VOLLEYBALL The girl's volleyball team's primary improvement over last year's team was their teamwork both offensively and defensively. They put it together and played as a team. Their serves were stronger, and basic skills were well executed. The best match of the season for the varsity team was their match against Chillicothe in the final round of the Sectional Tournament at Chillicothe. They won this match and qualified to go to the District Volleyball Tournament at Marietta. Here they became District Runners-up, an indication of a very successful and well- merited finish. To coach Kelley Stilwell and the Logan Linksmen it is a sport demanding practice, fitness and skill. The team, with two girls playing this year, finished their season with a 14-3 record which put them seconcf in the SEOAL and third in the district. Athletics 27 RESERVE The Reserve Cheerleaders have had a fantastic year of cheering. The six-girl squad has cheered on both the football and basketball reserve teams. They have enjoyed every moment of cheering these two great teams to victory. Along with cheering, these girls helped the varsity squad put together many fine per- formances before and between games by building huge mounts and by using the mini-tramp. There was one veteran, Deb- bie Reynolds, while the rest of the team were begin- ners in the sport. The girls were undaunted by their losses and were always eager to go and play again, said Coach Gail Waddell. Ron 1 — Cindy Adams, Susan Walsh, Debbie Reynolds. The reserve team had a winning season with 6 wins and 2 losses. Julie Bell led the team in both scoring and rebounding, while Daun Irvine was second in both categories. On Mar. 6,1976, Logan took on Lancaster in tourna- ment action at Athens High School. According to Hawks, Logan's ''tough defense held the Gales to only two points in the first quarter. Maintaining the aggressive defense, Logan's 20% from the field still provided the thrill-a-minute game victory. Top right: Julie Bell stretches (or the ball. Above: My ball. Athletics 31 32 Athletics V I SPECIAL NIGHTS September 12,1975, will be a date that will always be remembered by Logan High School sports fans, for it was on this night that our football field officially became Bill Sauer Field. Naming the field for Bill only seemed the natural thing to do in view of his more than 50 years of loyal support for Chieftain ath- letics. Bill's love of sports and his intense dedication to his alma mater have been an inspiration to the youth of Logan for these many, many years. Because Bill has sacrificed to support Logan sports, the general feeling was that something should be done to perpet- uate the many years of devotion to Logan High School, given so unselfishly by Bill, a graduate of the Class of 1932 and a football letter winner for his loy- alty, having never missed a practice or a game for a period of four years. Bill missed four games in 36 years — when he was a patient in the hospital. This season, Bill was brought from the hospital to the games, and we won four of the five games he attended. His magic is still working, as evidenced in the last three football games at home. H. R. Smith Athletics 33 If there is one thing Logan doesn't lack, it's team spirit. LHS has determined athletes who strive to show their greatest potential through enthusiasm and willingness to step ahead. Logan's sports programs have increased in the number of participants, making the spirit of the team more intense. Boys aren't alone in their victory race. Girls are close behind with dedication and determination. Losing often follows winning for both girls and boys. The joy of winning wouldn't be so great if we didn't experience losing now and then. Even though it hurts, we push ourselves to do better, to work harder, and to spirit the team to a victory. 34 Athletics The 1976 basketball cheer- leaders have enjoyed a great season cheering for the team. They have enjoyed putting on a performance before the games for the audience. Most of the girls feel that, though they really like to cheer and to build the pyra- mids, it takes a lot of hard practice to put on the kind of show that they have put on this year. But when game time comes they believe that the practice is completely worth it. The cheerleaders have done a great job in pro- moting spirit in the 1976 sea- son and are to be com- mended for it. Coach Fitzgerald commented, This was my most enjoyable team in six years of coaching. The round- ballers also showed fine poise in tournament action by winning the first game against Athens but losing the second game to a strong, more experienced Lan- caster team. Receiving honors on All-SEOAL team were: Mike McBroom — 1st team and Bill Seel — Honorable Mention. McBroom also received honors as being the top free throw shooter in the SEOAL. Under the coaching of Chuck Kemper, the papooses demonstrated fine ball handling, strong defense, and a power offense. The Kempermen were commended on their overall team- work and hard practice. Coach Kemper commented, Total team attitude was good all year, and we had no selfish players. I would like to congratulate the team on a fine year. Athletics 39 WRESTLING Wrestling is the fastest growing competitive sport in America, as seen at LHS this year. With Logan starting its third year of wrestling, new things were seen in the pro- gram: cheerleaders, support, and WINNING. Thisyear Logan had good support from their fans, helping the team catch fire and come alive. We found out what dedication combined with hard work can do, when we came out winners for the first time in Logan's wrestling history, said Coach Wojiciechowski. We were 6-2 in dual meets, placed in all of our tournaments, and placed 10 out of 11 wrestlers in our league meet. Logan's success is due partly to the leadership of its five out- standing senior wrestlers and to the effort that the young men of this program put into it. People now know that Logan has a wres- tling team, so look out next year! Row 7 — Bob Cassady, |an Hartman. Wayne Moore. Dave Russell, |ohn Miller, George Cassady. The team, with only 3 seniors, was very young and met up with some fine competition. Even though this year's record wasn't that spectacular. Coach Richardson has great expectations about next year. Mark Armstrong and Dave Emerson set new records in Pole Vault (12'5% ) and High lump (€ '1 ) respectively. Also qualifying for the district were the 880 yd. relay team, mile relay team, Dave Dalton — 180 yd. low hurdles, and Marty Hallett — 220 yd. dash. Athletics 43 TENNIS The' 1976 netters recorded a fine season with an overall 8 win-3 loss record. This earned them second in the league tournament. Their best overall match was against lackson where they won 7-2 in league play. The team consisted of 4 seniors and 5 sophomores. This is usually the last thing on anybody's mind in May, but when you can see how you place in the district and state, some peo- ple jump to the opportunity. Getting up early on a Saturday and riding down to OU paid off for some. To others it was another day when they wished they would've turned over in bed and gone back to sleep. Many hours of studying and concentration was put in on one specific subject. Teachers gave team members additional informa- tion, and then for two to three hours students answered ques- tions at OU. french I: Kevin Cable, Melissa Spencer, Marsha Mathias, |ohn Connor. BOYS' AND GIRLS' STATE What's a nice way to start your summer vacation? Probably the last thing on a student's mind would be the thought of going back to school. Well, six students represented Logan this past sum- mer at Capital and Ohio Universi- ties. Staters are sponsored by inter- ested organizations in Logan. The stater must be recommended by the school principal as a student possessing high qualities of schol- arship, definite interest in Ameri- can government, high moral char- acter, self-reliance, mental alert- ness and the willingness to assume responsibility. Delegates are grouped to make up the population of each city. Each city also has an advisor and counselor Here citizen's partici- pation in the county and state gov- ernmental activities begin. City, county and state elections are held, and the winners take their posts and keep busy through the rest of the week. Closing 211 MAY 21,1976 |oy, pride, excitement, and dedication are just a few of the emotions felt Friday night. May 21, at the armory. This was the place where the Senior Banquet was held for the Class of 76. Mel Colburn noted an individual, Dick Erb, who had been with the class for their seven years and who helped them in their time of need, whatever it may have been. Mr. Erb wished the students good luck in the future, lane McDaniel read the class will which was followed by the class history read by Brenda Lehman. Mark Dennis read through the class prophecy, and Shelby Inboden read the short but touchy class poem. Above Mark Dennis reading a humorous pari in the class prophecy Kiffhl Some senior boys and their hungry appetites e 212 Closing FIRST STEP OF THE STAIRWAY 7:50 AM and the day has just begun for several students in the junior class. Decorations started for the Senior Banquet early May 21. You were too busy to eat, but in the long run it paid off. Jeff Bazell and Cathy Parry were co-chairpersons for the prom, and many hours of dedication were put into it by both. The most spectacular goal was to cover the walls of the cafeteria with pink paper. Dec- orators went through four rolls of tape and everything stayed attached. The balloons were filled with helium and air; this took more than five hours. Instead of renting a tux, some juniors probably wished they had rented a wheelchair for the prom. Top left: Mr. Killoran and his hot air balloon. Right: One wall of decorations before destruction. Left: Janet.Skinner, Jeff Bazell and Becky Fickel streaming their way to happiness. Closing 213 STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN Above: Bob Smilley refreshing Debbie Cook. Top: Mrs. Tucker, junior class advi- sor, serving Bill Puller. Below: Chit-chat on the terrace. 214 Closing MAY 22,1976 One night a year there is an elegant prom at Logan that makes you wonder if those are the same kids you see day in and day out. Cinderella's magic was up on the hilltop May 22. The queen, junior class advisor Mrs. Dorothy Tucker, watched over the angels with several teachers also chaper- oning. The room was decorated with flowers, but- terflies, bumblebees and ladybugs on the walls. Candles, placed in wine bottles, were the center- pieces on the table, with balloons floating around the room. Few will forget the fun they had because pleasant memories are never forgotten. Closing 215 216 Closing MAY 30,1976 On an ominous Sunday evening the graduat- ing Class of 1976 held its baccalaureate and commencement. The Board of Education, School Administration and Departmental Heads followed by Seniors marched in slowly to Pomp and Circumstance played by Brenda Rempel Co-valedictorians, Gretchen Inboden and Susan Richards, presented speeches to the audience. Diplomas were passed out. When principal George Stump declared the Class of 1976 offi- cially graduated, the gleeful graduates magically produced flying frisbees. After Wanda Mat- thews gave the final address, the participants solemnly walked out to take their place in soci- ety.
