season opener, the gridders went on to keep their records fairly balanced through the grinding season. the most enthusiastic effort of the season was heart- breakingly overcome by a worried ironton, 7-0. tri-captains were seniors wait newlon, kevin berry, and ken culbertson. with a strong nucleus of returning lettermen and promising reserve talent, the 1973 season foretells great improvement. 68 coach scott fitzgerald's 1972-73 chieftain roundball team enjoyed logan's finest basketball season since 1968, and the future prospects are very exciting, al- though five valuable seniors will be lost, six varsity let- termen and a championship reserve team return to lead the chiefs into the 1973-74 season. the chiefs' season was highlighted by big wins over hilliard, ironton, and meigs and extremely strong and exciting efforts against league leaders waverly and gallipolis. co-captains of this year's squad were jim pierce and jim whitcraft. pierce and randy norris were named to the all-seoal teams, while jeff Campbell merited honor- able mention. coach don hustead's papooses sizzled to the seoal reserve basketball championship in a series of sus- penseful and finely-played games that promise great things for the chieftains in the coming seasons. 70 group opposite: row 1: coach scott fitzgerald, jack mcgrady, jim pierce, dave shaw, jim kemper, keith mowery; row 2: ed richards, logan team averaged 42.7 points per game. girls' athletic association is a group ot girls engaging in the intramural activities of basketball, volleyball and tennis, the series of regular games are jim whitcraft. logan was a very young team and will lose only one other senior, steve kip mathias. although logan loses its greatest ever group of dis- tance men, the freshman crop of fine distance person- nel should bolster logan's chances at winning the 1973 championship. 79 group opposite, left to right: row 1; coach don hustead, coach kelly stilwell, john corby, mike fain, terry leasure, spring sports, by the soggy weather, the chiefs finished with a 5-7 slate. probably the most important game of the season was that with ironton, which the chiefs lost, 5-0. after their 1972 co-championship, this season's failure to take the seol crown was disappointing, and the chiefs were then tripped up by lancaster's golden gales, 8-6, in their sec- tional game. losing a number of standout seniors, including most valuable player kevin berry, will undoubtedly be a chal- lenge to next year's squad, but coach kelly stilwell ex- pects a fine group of underclassmen to lift the 1974 sea- son to a winning one. 81 track and field the 1973 track season was the most suc- cessful since the late 50's and early 60's, in addition to compiling a 33-10-2 record in the regular season, and finishing third in the seol, the thinclads rewrote eight school records. the 1973 season highlights included; de- feating new lexington for the first time ever; tieing adena, the 1972 class a champions; setting eight school records along with many other invitational records; and coaching the following seniors; tri-captains, chris tolliver, bruce walker, and jim whit- craft, along with jim
