It is our sincere hope that you have tak- en advantage of the educational oppor- tunities made available to you during the past twelve years as we attempted to assist you in attaining the knowledge necessary to achieve your individual potentials. Today, when the acquisition of knowl- edge is a necessity, we hope that you have prepared yourself in such a way that you will be able to assume your rightful place in our democratic society. Whether you plan to continue your education in a col- lege or a technical school, become gain- fully employed, or assume the responsi- bilities of homemaking, we urge you to approach your undertakings with a posi- tive attitude, for if you are determined to be successful, you shall be. Learning is a life-long process—and it should be. Never stop growing—always strive toward greater heights than you believe are possible to attain. Through perseverance and determination you can achieve your goals. May God grant you good health and continued success in all of your endeavors. George M. Saribalas 8 Administrative Assistant HAROLD R. SMITH Secretary JANETTE MIKES TO THE CLASS OF 1970: Let me congratulate you upon the completion of your public school education. The same sun rises The same time every day. But this day is different— This day is Graduation Day. Families awaken, Prepare for the day, Hurriedly dress. Dresses are unlocked From their dark prisons, Carefully ironed Then put aside. Suits soon escape their Plastic masks while Shoes are polished And shirts are pressed. Finally, the time comes For which seniors have waited For twelve long years. Behind the scene, Speeches are practiced, Nervously read; Tense seniors wait Friends crowd together Speak one last time Perhaps never again. “Pomp and Circumstance” Floats through the air, Serenely hovers. Mothers are weeping, Wiping their eyes; Fathers are watching, Waiting to see their Proud sons and daughters March to the stage, Step on the air. Addresses are given, A name is called, A senior steps forward, Receives his diploma, The height of the ceremony. Then suddenly it’s over. Proud seniors step down, Solemnly disperse, Talk to their relatives, Say last words to friends; Everyone leaves. Dusk comes quickly. Day is at an end. Graduation day. —Patricia Woolery MEMORIES -(Sung to tune of “Eoj Themdsfrom Romeo and Juliet” I The time has come to say good-by ( To. classroom walls and friends so dear at Logan IliVh . JIM BOB RICHARDS DANA BEOUGHER DWIGHT SMART 5 e n i o r L e t t e r m CHIEFS EXPERIENCE FRUSTRATING SEASON In their opening game, the highly favored Logan Chieftains rolled to an impressive BO- 22 win over the tough Morgan Raiders. Quar- terback Bob Johnston’s passing sparked the Chiefs to the win as he heaved a pair of long passes of 55 yards to flanker Mark Shaw and 41 yards to tight end Rod Garey. John- ston also rolled around end for the final score. Logan stumbled in their next two outings before facing the state-ranked Jackson Ironmen in their home opener. Jackson took a 6-0 lead, but the Chiefs tied the score on a 37-yard run by Chuck Lowe. The Ironmen came back with the winning score with 3:28 left in the game. After beating Nelsonville-York, Logan beat Athens by the largest score ever—34-0. Every- thing the Chiefs tried worked to perfection as they rolled up and down the field at will. Rod Garey and Bob Schmitter turned in their best performances of the year. Coach Mikes summed it up best by saying that it was a “great team effort.” In their next two games the Chiefs tied Meigs and then lost to Gallipolis and, in doing so, lost quarterback Bob Johnston. In their season finale, the Chiefs bombed Wellston 38- 14. The Chiefs were sparked by the strong running form of Dana Beougher and the out- standing defensive work of Bill Shaw and “Puff” Hartman. Although an average season, it was highlighted by many bright spots which will aid Coach Mikes next season. The 1969-1970 version of the Logan Basket- ball team had the most successful season for Logan in recent years. Logan’s record was 11-9. The Chiefs’ inability to win on the road was the main factor in the 8 losses. Logan’s only loss at home was by league champion, arch-rival Athens. Leaders of the Chiefs this year were Mark Shaw, who received a place on the second team ALL- OHIO, first team ALL-DISTRICT, first team ALL- SEOAL, and most valued player of SEOAL; Steve Hampshire, who received a place on the third team ALL-SEOAL; Bill Shaw, ALL-SEOAL Honor- able Mention. To achieve this outstanding record, the Chiefs won the Northern Division by downing Athens twice. The Chiefs then went on to face the Southern Division champs, the Ironton Tigers, for the league championship, only to lose by the score of 7-6 in the 9th inning. To pick a most valuable player on this team would not be an easy job, put probably contributing more than anyone else was Bill Shaw. Bill was named to the All-District base- ball squad and also was named an alternate to the All-Ohio baseball game. Other standouts for Logan were seniors: second baseman Herbie Buhrts and catcher ‘‘Puffy'’ Hartman; junior pitcher-out- fielder Mark Shaw; and sophomore, third baseman Steve Brown. National Honor Society Membership in the National Honor Society has become recognized nationally as one of the highest honors that can be bestowed upon a high school student. Membership is, however, more than an honor; it carries with it a re- sponsibility and should be considered the beginning of an effort to achieve recognition and honor. Once selected for membership, a student is singled out. He should not only continue to demonstrate those out- standing qualities which brought about his selection, but he should exert a new influence to improve conditions about him and promote those qualities—Leadership, Char- acter, Scholarship, and Service—for which the National Honor Society stands. 125 FIRST ROW: Rich Rheinscheld, Tim Woodgeard, Mark Bowers, Tom Gerken, Mr. Lampman, Advisor.
