To the youth of today, venturing into such a com- plex world is both frightening and challenging. May we of the class of 1963 be equal to meeting this modern challenge while gaining new knowledge and wisdom during our search for our individual goals. On the pages of this book you will see a kaleido- scope of the memories which we shall cherish long after we have ceased to be a part of them—memories of demanding but gratifying studying, of exciting sports and festive parties, of good friends and good talks. Just as one sees the colorful changes in the land, the hills, and the sky throughout the year, so you will see that this school year has been just another sea- son of our lives—a stepping stone to the future. 4 5 7 Hail, Logan High School! CWfEPS HMfSW STROMS TRfRD At the outset of the 1962 Chieftain football season, both the team—with several returning veterans—and their supporters were justified in anticipating a successful season. The season opened with Bexley journey- ing to the L.H.S. gridiron. When six fumbles in the second half led to the Chief's down- fall, the Bexley Blue Lions, who have al- ways held a mysterious jinx over the Chiefs, overcame Logan's highly touted gridders by a 22-0 score. In the second pre-league game, Logan scored in the first quarter and then held off the determined Braves from Columbus Whetstone to the tune of 8 to 6. The league opener on September 21 brought the Middleport Yellow Jackets to town. The stout Logan defense held the Mid- die's scoreless while the offensive unit spurted along, scoring 22 points against Middleport's 0. The high point of the 1962 season came at the Jackson game against the Chief's arch rivals, the Ironmen. A goal line stand in the first quarter inspired the Chiefs to a magnificent team effort to end the Ironmen's winning streak at 18 with a score of 20-0. Even though the Greyhounds of Nelson- ville, our next victims, scored on the first play from scrimmage, from that play on the Chieftain defense stiffened and the offense went on to score 28 points in the first half and 6 in the second to triumph 34-6. Athens dimmed the SEOL title hopes of the Chiefs by defeating them 20-0. The first half ended in a scoreless deadlock, but the second half was a different story with the speedy Bulldog backs' long runs being the main factor in the final tally. Pomeroy proved to be the second down- fall for the Chiefs. After scoring in the first quarter, the Logan club led mid-way through the game,- but after the half time ceremo- nies for Parents' Night and Senior Night were completed and the playing resumed, the Panthers came back to score twice, killing the Chief's title hopes, 12-8. The fighting Chiefs almost upset their next grid foe, the league-leading Gallipolis Blue Devils. It was a battle royal from the opening kickoff, with Gallipolis scoring 14 points while holding the Chiefs scoreless. The game was marred by the calling of nu- merous penalties, most of which were called against the visiting Chieftains. The eight L.H.S. senior gridders closed their high school football career with a close but satisfying victory over Wellston's Rockets in a hardnosed battle ending in Logan's top- ping the Rockets by a score of 18-14. The season was a disappointment to many; but, with victories over traditional foes from Jack- son and Wellston and a near upset of Gallipolis, the season was a success in many ways. 80 81 JOHN WELLS TACKLE (SEOL HONORABLE MENTION) BILL PREWITT TACKLE C NIO BILL BROWN CENTER 82 BOB NELSON HALFBACK CHUCK DAUBENMIER HALFBACK (SEOL HONORABLE MENTION) LETTER FREGH UEN TOP ROW: Manager Mike Smith, John Hahn, Dick Fox, John Gasser, Bill Walker, Bob Trowbridge, Bob Courier, Lloyd Simmons, Eddie Row- land, Foster Hood, Coach Bob Combs. H-U-S-T-L-E 86 OASSV CAGERG CLOBBER CO UPEmORG The 1962-63 Chieftain cage team, coached by Ed Lendenski, emerged from an exciting sea- son with the best record made by a Logan team in twelve years by compiling fourteen wins against five losses. In two pre-league contests the Chiefs fared well. The first action the Hustlers saw was in the preview game at York where they edged Racine, 16-15, in sixteen minutes of action. In the next contest the fast-breaking Chiefs outscored Lancaster Bishop Fenwick, 74-58. Jackson, the Purple and White's first league opponents, were a much taller team than the Chieftains and were anchored by an All-American center. In this first contest Jackson clipped the Chiefs, 55-52. In the return game with the Ironmen, Logan avenged their earlier defeat while a stand- ing-room-only crowd of 1000 watched four of the five Logan starters score in double figures to win by a score of 81-52. The first game against Wellston proved to be an easy one for the Logan quintette as they rolled over the Rockets, 71-48. In the return match the Rockets struck back, com- bining a tight defense and a sharp shooting eye to upset the Chiefs, 81-69. Although being outscored 27-21, from the field, traditional rival Athens took ad- vantage of Logan's fouls to win the first encounter of the two teams, 66-62. The Bulldog's defense prevailed in the second game of the series, 63-49. In two non-league games the Chieftains downed the tall Lancaster Gales, 59-47 and Fairfield Union Falcons, 75-59. The Hounds from Nelsonville provided unexpectedly stiff competition as the two teams battled back and forth with the Hus- tlers outscoring the Greyhounds, 59-54. In their final home tilt the Chiefs again asserted their superiority by defeating Nelsonville 74- 50. Gallipolis provided a breather for the Chiefs, although the final score 61-57, did not show it. The score of the second game was somewhat more convincing, 57-38. Pomeroy next fell victim to the Chief's steam roller as they absorbed an 80-72 loss at Logan. The second game was slightly closer with the Chieftain's winning, 68-65. Because of bad weather the Chiefs were forced to play Middleport twice in a short period of time. The Hustlers won both the first, 50-43, and the second, 68-62. In the regular season finale the Chiefs played a slowed down game, beating Sheri- dan's Generals, 54-49. The season ended abruptly when, in the first game of the tournaments the Chiefs drew the seventh ranked team in the state, Marietta's Tigers and lost, 71-49. This climaxed the Hustler's fine season with a record of fourteen wins and five losses. 87 JIM CRUISE GUARD S.E.O.L. HONORABLE MENTION 88 MIKE HENRY FORWARD CRUISE DRIVES HARD FOR A LAY UP. High school dances, parties, plays, concerts, and bake sales, all compose the social scene at L.H.S., but after these have been completed many new activities will be ours in the world outside. KAREN VOLiMER 1962 WO WECOMIM QUEEN FOOTBALL DANCE- 108 1962 A victory dance was in order after the Hustlers upset the top-ranked Ironmen. Casual was the word to describe the attire and atmosphere of one of the many sock hops this year. One of the most popular dances of the social season was the WATH record hop sponsored by the Chieftain Squaws. Several downhearted Chiefs try to dance their troubles away after a heartbreaking loss to Athens. U 0 P C BA K EALL DANCB At the basketball dance— Three Coins in a Fountain —the FFA candi- date, Goldie Reed, was chosen bas- ketball queen. The decorations includ- ed variegated crepe paper of purple, gold, and blue, and a tiered fountain, complete with goldfish. MO PRjOM - 1963 On the perfect starlit night of May 4, 1963, many formals were seen fluttering in the breezes, for on this clear and lovely night the annual Junior-Senior Prom was held in the Logan High School auditorium. For the juniors this prom—Bali Ha'i—symbolized many hours of hard work, much fun, and staying out all night. For the seniors this long awaited dance symbolized all the dances of the past, the anxiety of wearing traditional long formals, and the big finale of their high school fun. Prior to the prom, the juniors presented the second annual Senior Banquet, attended by the Senior class, the faculty, and the Junior class officers in the cafeteria. The decorations were in the class colors of rose and white. At the banquet the honor students were recognized; the will, prophecy, history, and poem were read; the choice of the senior memorial was announced; and the class song was sung. The prom itself offered enchantment when it was given the theme Bali Ha'i. The auditorium was decorated as a tropical isle. White and blue fiberglass clouds formed the evening sky; a volcano glowed with spasmodic eruptions; on a mound in the center stood a tiki god watching over all the activities. Water falls bubbled; fish nets draped the walls; the band played under a thatched roof hut; and in the background the sun sank into a painted sea of blue. Here on our little island paradise we danced to the Nightbeats' music until the be- witching midnight hour. After the prom had ended, the fun and gaiety of the evening still continued. The mothers of the juniors and seniors planned a post-prom party which was held at the Izaak Walton club house. In order to comple- ment the prom theme, the club house was decorated in a luau fashion with leis, palm trees, and fish nets. At the post prom couples danced into the wee hours of the morning to the music of the Keynotes. Follow- ing the occasion, the merrymakers enjoyed many private parties, followed by breakfasts which quickly brought the night into dawn. Those couples with energy to spare were seen Sunday morning attending church and preparing for trips to nearby lakes and caves. Thus the prom of 1963 came to end and the glamorous glow of the past twenty-four hours faded into a peaceful night with the anticipation of the few remaining school days. Ill 113 UNDERCLASSMEN Although Logan's underclassmen work diligently through the week, they must occasionally take a weekend just to relax and fully enjoy the world into which one day they must journey to remain for the rest of their lives. The student who entered the forest on the title page of this book represents for us the beginning of our elementary and secondary education. As the scholar emerges from the forest on the closing page of this, our 1963 Aerial, he is symbolic of the ending of one phase of our lives. Although we have acquired im- measurable knowledge during the past twelve years, we will continue to gain new knowledge and wisdom each day of our lives. 152 Compliments of LOGAN MERCHANTS 153 LOGAN MONUMENT COMPANY 156 E.
