1962 AERIAL VOLUME 50 LOGAN HIGH SCHOOL LOGAN, OHIO Teresa Walter Dee Gabriel Janice Thompson Dick Spencer THEN AND NOW Fifty years have passed since the first Aerial Staff struggled to meet its deadlines and fulfill its duties. Perhaps they rushed to the meetings in the Tin Lizzie ' avoiding horse-drawn carriages in the dirt roads. Middy blouses, pleated skirts, knickers, and long socks typified the teen attire. Today's staff tumbles into the highpowered Rod and races to the meeting, avoiding pedestrians and slower vehicles. Sweaters, slacks, sweat shirts, and blue jeans now complete the casual wardrobe of today's youth. Although the pace and appearance attributed to the student of fifty years ago has changed, the goals they sought are ours today. 3 Purpose of the 1962 Aerial: The purpose of the 1962 Aerial is to present with words and pictures the activities and events of the school year. Since the Aerial is celebrating its Fiftieth Anniversary, we have tried to weave a touch of nostalgia into the year's happenings. We hope that this collection of memorable ex- periences will please both the alumni and the student body. We hope that these photographs will re- call many enjoyable experiences for our alumni, and will pay tribute to the for- mer students. 7 8 AN ABSTRACT OF L.H.S In the autumn when the leaves begin to turn, many sounds echo from the school on the hill. These sounds indicate the new surge of academic and social life engulfing Logan High. The clatter of metal cleats on the cement steps and the crash of colliding football helmets promise excitement of lively battles. The muffled voices of the teachers resound through the halls as they try to acquaint the pupil with the facts of their subject. On winter nights, the auditorium vibrates with the sound of basketballs as they swish through the net and thump against the floor. The cheerleaders' rustling pom-poms arouse the enthusiasm of the crowds during football and basketball seasons. On any after- noon of the school year, one can hear the thud of books and the metallic ring of the lockers as the students prepare to leave the building. Many nights the pounding gavel commands the attention of the students who return to participate in extra-curricular activities. As one scans the pages of the 1962 Aerial, these familiar sights and sounds will be recalled. 9 Shirley Goss Hester Lee White Secretaries Patty Edgar Sandy Helber 10 COOKS Mrs. Smith Mrs. Gribble Mrs. Risch Mrs. Carter Sam Stewart Robert Smith Bill Woodgeard Bill Sickles Ralph Blackston Harold Vanbibber Robert Gastin TRANSPORTATION SUPERVISOR Mr. Risch Mr. Risch represents all the drivers of Logan High School buses. The scope of the current athletic program at Log- an High is shown on the following pages. 56 Gary Brenning sprints through the Wellston line as two Golden Rockets try to stop him. TRIBESMEN CAPTURE THIRD The small but scrappy Logan Chieftains outscored their opponents 2:1 and led the SEO League in almost all of the ground game; the tribes- men closed the season in third place. Logan 8, Bexley 12—The football season was opened as the Logan Chief- tians were edged by Bexley. Logan 8, Washington Court House 6—Logan won a close contest that was tense to the last second. Dee Gabriel sparked the hard hitting Logan squad. Logan 0, Jackson 24—The Chiefs lost their first league game to Jackson. The size and power of the opponent was the deciding factor in the hard fought game. Tom Gasser gave an outstanding demonstration of defensive play. Logan 0, Athens 6—Although this was parents' night, the game proved to be the heartbreaker of the season. The contest determined second position in Southeastern Ohio League. Logan lost. Logan 24, Pomeroy 12—Logan played their roughest game in a driz- zling rain at Pomeroy. Ron Brimner, left halfback, enjoyed his finest night of running. , J ) Logan 14, Gallipolis 12-Logan, fighting to score in the last minutes, turned defeat into victory. Curt Hilton was outstanding at end position. Logan 32, Wellston 6-The Chiefs displayed their power before a senior night crowd as they ruled over the Wellston Rockets. Ron Connor, left end, gave his best performance of the year. Logan 52, Middleport 0-The Logan Chieftains finished their season by romping over Middleport. Gary Brenning, right halfback, sparked the team as all seven seniors, including tackle Al Adair, scored. Although the 1961 football squad held only third place at the season's end, the drive and fighting spirit of the Chiefs will be well remembered by the Logan fans. Miss Carla Garverick; gracious, lovely, and auburn-haired, was chosen to reign over Logan High. 65 BASKETBALL Phelps takes rebound. Uk HUSTLERS TAKE FIFTH The 1962 Chieftains, averaging 5'10 , were short in height but long on hustle. Regardless of the advantage of the larger teams, the Chiefs were a considerably tougher ball club than their height implied. The pre-season forecast chose Logan for seventh or eighth place, but the Hustlers, disproving this prediction, earned fifth place. Logan 41, Bishop Fenwick 54—The team displayed considerable nervousness in this opening game, but the Chiefs were defensively alert. The Irish were unable to make even one field goal in the second quarter. Logan 57, Jackson 75—Jackson had a definite height advantage and Logan seemed plagued with foul trouble. In the first half, three of the Chieftain starters fouled out of the game. Logan 66, Wellston 88—Again Logan's height problems held them back as the Rockets out-rebounded the Chiefs, 59, 23. Logan 69, Middleport 50—The Hustlers whipped the Yellowjackets handily and did an outstanding job from the foul line—21 of the 26 shots. Logan 60, Athens 67—The Chiefs had an unfortunate night as three Hustlers fouled out and the team was out-rebounded. Logan 71, Nelsonville 45—The Logan Cagers tromped the Grayhounds with their brilliant fast break. Logan 57, Gallipolis 42—The Chiefs' fast break paid off again as they scuttled the Blue Devils. Logan 74, Lancaster 80—This was designated as the finest ball game played in the early season. Bill Patterson's shots on the foul line were outstanding. He made an amazing 20 of 23 shots. Logan 63, Sheridan 62—Logan outlasted Sheridan in the consolation game of the Lancaster Holiday Tournament. Gary Dalton came through in fine style while scor- ing 23 points. Logan 56, Pomeroy 112—The Panthers bombed the Chiefs, as Logan had an un- usually cold night from the floor shooting 27 per cent. Logan 57, Jackson 90—Although our cagers went down before the Ironmen, they made a great showing, collecting eleven points straight in the final two minutes of the game. Ed Spriggs, 6'8 Ironman, was too much for the Hustlers. Logan 69, Wellston 80—The Chiefs showed an ability to never give up as they nar- rowed a 23 point gap to 9 points in the third quarter. Logan 64, Middleport 43—A second period outburst from the Hustlers made the Yellowjackets an easy conquest. Logan 44, Athens 56—The Hustlers journeyed to Athens without their coach. Even Bill Patterson's speedy drives for nineteen points could not save the game. Logan 77, Nelsonville 57—Trailing in the third quarter, the Chiefs caught fire and battled for every ball. Carl Dicken, a real Chief under the boards, led in re- bounds. In the second half the Hustlers shot an amazing 54 per cent. Logan 62, Gallipolis 53—Logan earned fifth place in the SEO League with their sparkling defense. Senior Bill Mowery, played an exceptional defensive game. Logan 61, Crooksville 56—The Chiefs broke a long standing jinx of ten years by winning their first tournament game. Logan 45, New Lexington 63—Although this was a tight defensive game, Logan senior, Bill Patterson, led the Chiefs with fourteen points. 67 CHIEFTAIN CAGERS TOP ROW: Bill Chappie, Don Phelps, Paul Owens, Mike Kraft, Mike Henry, Manager-Bob Sauers. Due to the limited seating facilities, the Junior-Senior Banquet became an All-Senior Banquet with the faculty invited. Gilded bird cages and peasant baskets brimming with flowers hung from the ceiling. The tables displayed the senior class colors and the flower. Programs, designating the theme of the prom, were purchased for each attending senior and guest. After the reading of the Prophecy and the History by the honor students, the excited seniors retired to prepare for the prom. The atmosphere at L.H.S. on May 5 was truly Younger Than Springtime. Students attending the prom reached the dance floor by means of a stairway which passed under a flower-covered arbor. The focal point of the decorations was a tiered fountain that sparkled with continually-running water. The fountain, en- closed in a brick wall, was surrounded by flowers, and a rotating spotlight tinged the water with color. Dancers were further fascinated by gardens along the back wall of the gym. Real flowers appeared to be growing in their natural environment. White wrought iron furniture, hidden in grassy corners completed the outdoor feeling. Shades of blue, turquoise, and silver created a canopy of blended color over the scene. The Ralph Jarvis Orchestra filled the air with music as the senior girls floated serenely around the room in floor-length gowns. The underclass girls eagerly anticipated their senior prom when they too can revive the traditional long gowns. After the last dance, the couples again returned to their homes to change for the Post Prom held at the Izaac Walton Club House. The boys and girls changed their more dignified dress for comfortable cotton attire and happily twisted away the remaining evening hours. 115 SENIORS Through the four years spent at L. H. S. the seniors have experienced the ac- tivities symbolized on these pages. Along with predom- inating studies came all the excitement of sports, social life, and the always present high school romances. The warm memories associated with these events will re- main in the hearts of the 1962 Seniors. 116 ! rnr FROM THE END SPRING NEW BEGINNINGS” Senior Class Officers LONA NUTTER-Secretary MIKE CANTY-Student Council CARLA GARVERICK-Vice-President RONNIE BRIMNER—President ANN LAPPEN-Treasurer - - r 4 Sandra Lea West Wendell Earl Johnston Elwood Roy Harris Judith Marlene Mohler Connie Sue Herring Larry Ray Coakley Ruth Evelyn Schrader Donnie Lee Herring Karolyn Sue Bowlby Thomas Wylie Blume Lona Rae Nutter Larry Fremont Richards Margaret Kay Sorrell Frederick Kenneth Vaughan Linda Kay Bailey James Warren Johnson Linda Lou Ringhiser David John Myers Mary Jane Stewart Ronald Raymond Conner Robert David Kuhn Marjorie Annabelle Souders Eva Jean Holcomb Gary Lee Sater John Patrick Trowbridge Martha Bernice Smith Sharlene Kay Norris Don W. When we walk slowly down the aisle. Fond memories come to mind. The football games, our senior prom, The clubs we Ifeave behind. We want to thank our teachers, Whom we can ne'er repay For all that they have taught us To help us on life's way. God, too, has guided us each day Through all our tribulations. And with His help in years to-come, We'll reach our destinations. By Sue Jones Class Flower — Violet Class Colors — Emerald Green and White 134 VALEDICTORY Susan Elberfeld High School days and experiences end tonight for us, the Seniors of nineteen hundred sixty- two. We pause during our commencement to remind ourselves that from this end spring new beginnings. We stand on the threshold of a new adventure, a new beginning. We voice our appreciation and our gratitude to our parents and to our teachers. It is you who have given us twelve years of interest and opportunity to prepare for our future. In later years, when we are more mature, we shall understand and more fully realize the inherent value of your gifts. The atomic era in which we live is filled with uncertainties, but we face the present as well as the future with eager expectation. We can fulfill our destinies if we but use the knowledge and the abilities acquired here at Logan High School. Curiosity for knowledge should be our goal for the pathway to new beginnings is paved with bricks of interest for those who seek the truth. Individually we must reach out and assimilate if we are to attain our own best fulfillment. The process of change creates for many of us waves of doubt—doubt of basic concepts of freedom, of character, and of religion. It is imperative that we preserve our freedom, maintain steadfastness of purpose, and keep a firm belief in God. These basic concepts will provide the courage necessary for us to meet bravely our future. We linger now, as Seniors, to bid you good-by. From the end spring new beginnings; beyond this horizon new events challenge us. SALUTATORY Melissa Horwell Parents, teachers, friends, classmates, and honored guests, the class of nineteen hundred sixty-two extends to you a most cordial welcome. Tonight is graduation. We have now attained the goal that we have been striving to reach. These past twelve years have been most important. In this time we have laid the foundation for our future lives. We have so many pleasant memories of our high school days, and we never want to forget them. Yes, tonight is graduation. It is the end; but it is also just the beginning, for from the end spring new beginnings. We hate to leave, but in a way we want to depart. We are eager to start out in life. The whole future lies ahead. It is ours. We can do whatever we want to with it. If we succeed, and we will with God's help, we will owe a large part of our success to Logan High School, to our parents, to our teachers, and to our friends. We thank you now for all you have done to make our graduation possible. In the future we will be more and more grateful. With these thoughts we thank you, and we welcome you to our graduation. CLASS HISTORY Carolyn Bray (Sixth Honor Student) By the fall of 1958 each of us had completed eight years of school. To most of us these years had gone rather slowly as we were eager to become freshmen and to be part of the high school. From the county grade schools and from the city schools, we came together and started our career at Logan High School. Our freshman year we elected Ronnie Brimner, class president; Curtis Hilton, vice-president; Melissa Horwell, secretary; and Fred Vaughan, treasurer. Ann Lappen and Curtis Hilton received the DAR citizenship awards. We enjoyed getting together for teen-timers and elected as our teen-timer officers: Mike Canty—president, Ann Lappen—vice-president, Lona Nutter—secretary, and Sandy West—treasurer. Our freshman cheerleaders were Susan Elberfeld, Carla Garverick, Melissa Horwell, Peggy Keller, Ann Lappen, and Judy Reed. On the final district scholarship tests, Tom Blume placed nineteenth in the state in science, and Melissa Horwell received state honorable mention in Latin I. The much worked for and looked forward to freshman dance climaxed our year with Blue Hawaii as its theme. 135 After a pleasant summer vacation, we returned to Logan High School to make our sophomore year a success. Mike Canty was our class president with Ann Lappen—vice-president, Lona Nutter —secretary, Teresea Walter—treasurer, and Sue Jones—our student council representative. For our reserve cheerleader squad, we chose the same members whom we had elected in our freshman year. Tom Blume's and Jim Johnson's geometry projects were rated superior at the District Science Day at Athens and were taken to state competition. Melissa Horwell and Sue Jones received state honorable mention in Latin II on the final district scholarship tests. Jim Johnson received honorable mention in the state in biology. Sophomores inducted into the National Honor Society were Susan Elberfeld, Tom Blume, Mike Canty, and Curtis Hilton. In track, Ronnie Brimner was a member of the team of boys who broke the high school record in the 880-yard relay, setting a new record of 1:35.2. Our junior year was a busy one filled with many activities, awards, and good times. We chose Curtis Hilton for president, Ronnie Brimner for vice-president, Melissa Horwell for secretary, Ann Lappen for treasurer, and Carla Garverick for student council representative. Jerry Gerken and Tom Blume scored high on the Merit Scholarship Test and were honored by receiving letters of commendation. In Spanish I, Jim Johnson placed ninth in the state on the final district scholarship test. Melissa Horwell was one of the few students who earned all A's every six weeks for the year. We presented our junior class play, Belles on Their Toes, which we will never forget. Chosen to go to Girls' State were Melissa Horwell, Mary Jo Rutter, Mickey Scaparrotti, Janice Thompson, and Teresa Walter. Tom Gasser and Bob Kuhn were named to attend Boys' State. Ronnie Brimner was awarded the Claude Chrisman Trophy for the outstanding junior athlete and scholar Mark Matheny broke our high school pole vault record, reaching 11 feet and IVi inches. Ronnie Connor and Mark Matheny were part of the team who set a new high school record in the mile run with a time of 3:40. Becoming members of our varsity cheerleader squad were Carla Garverick, Melissa Horwell, and Ann Lappen. The most important event which we anticipated was the Junior-Senior Banquet and Prom, for which we chose Look For A Star as the theme. We will always remember the work and fun we experienced decorating and preparing to honor the seniors. Finally, we became seniors at Logan High School. This year has seemed more important than years past, because we have been the ones to whom the other students look up. We started our year by voting for our senior class officers. We elected Ronnie Brimner—president, Carla Gar- verick—vice-president, Lona Nutter—secretary, Ann Lappen—treasurer, and Mike Canty—student council representative. During football season we selected our homecoming queen and her court. Tom Gasser, president of the student council, had the honor of announcing Carla Garverick as our school queen. Attending her were Melissa Horwell, Peggy Keller, Ann Lappen, and Judy Reed. This year we also took the Senior Scholarship Test. Tom Blume and Jim Johnson placed high- est in the county and were in the top five percent of the total number of Ohio high school sen- iors, who took the test. Placing highest on the Betty Crocker Test, Sue Jones was named our high school Homemaker of Tomorrow. In football, Alan Adair, Ronnie Brimner and Curtis Hilton were named to the all SEO, first team. Bill Patterson earned a place on the SEOL in basket- ball. In March we presented our senior class play, Our Hearts Were Young And Gay. We have selected the violet as our class flower and emerald green and white as our class colors. From The End Spring New Beginnings has been chosen as our class motto. Soon we will graduate from Logan High School and go our separate ways. Each of us will al- ways have many high school memories of both successes and failures which we have experienced in our high school hopes and efforts. We can always value the educational opportunities we have been given and will remember Logan High School as an important milepost in our lives. INFORMAL HISTORY Michele Scaparrotti Seniors: It all began in 1958, that wonderful whirlwind of high school days. Do you remember this? That first day of school each September, when all your friends congregated in the hall to com- pare vacation memories or to plan for the coming activities. The cool autumn evenings when you sat in the stadium while the band rehearsed on the field. 136 The Indian summer days when the stuffy classrooms were an extreme contrast to the azure skies and colorful hills. The crisp nights when hundreds of screaming voices rang out over the football field. The pride you felt when the Marching Chiefs came down the field with their tall feathered plumes flying and their white gloves flashing. The pep assemblies where student participants made stumbling speeches and did amusing skits. The winter days brought a change in mood to the whole school. Everyone settled down to basketball and—some serious studying! The noon hours before a big test when you found your friends in a room firing questions at one another. The way you had to battle through the crowded halls at the class changes, shouting quick greetings to passing friends. The stairs lined with boys and girls singing carols the day before Christmas vacation. The funfilled drives to away games, and the happy reunions with your out-of-town friends. The excitement of prom week, as every one searched for dates and made plans. The long graduation practices when you began to realize that your school days were quickly ending. And then, in what seemed a few short hours. Baccalaureate and Graduation were here and gone. You will always remember the mixed emotions you felt as you looked at your classmates and knew that this was the last time you would ever really be together. Senior Dick Spencer and underclassmen discuss the coming winter season at L.H.S. Dark classrooms give the impression of extreme inclosure while Indian summer days tempt Logan High students. Senior cheerleader Melissa Horwell introduces some of the senior trackmen. (..H.S. basketball fans give a rousing cheer for the Logan Hustlers. 138 Studious Peggy Keller holds her ears to drown out the sound of Janice Thompson and Pat Jones as they cram for a test. Seniors group to sing Christmas carols in the halls. Laughing students rush through the crowded halls to attend another class. While the other students are avidly interested in Mrs. Krauss' English Literature class, Jim Donahey and Jim Johnson seem preoccu- pied. Senior girls, singing traditional L.H.S. songs, celebrate the last day of school with a parade.
