Text from Pages 1 - 184 of the 1961 volume:

TO EVERY THING THERE IS A SEASON, AND A TIME TO EVERY PURPOSE UNDER THE HEAVEN. VOLUME FORTY-NINE LOGAN HIGH SCHOOL LOGAN, OHIO Logan A SENSE OF WONDER Before man gained through science the knowledge which enables him to under- stand weather and climate, the seasons were a wonder to him. The inhabitants of his world—both animate and inanimate—responded in patterned ways to the coming of autumn, winter, spring, and summer; man himself responded both consciously and subconsciously to the changes in temperature, light, and availability of food. In one special way, however, man was different from all the other responding creatures which he observed—only man wondered. Wonder is a combination of awe and curiosity. It is the ingredient of curiosity that gives man knowledge; it is the in- gredient of awe that can make him wise. All children seem to possess this sense of wonder, and it is with childhood that our sophisticated society associates faith and credulity. What we dub maturity involves, among other things, a divorcing of ourselves from a delight in the everyday mir- acles 'of Walt Whitman. In our day we have systematized curiosity and extended our field of understanding until we are no longer awed by anything. This is a dilemma, for without both basic ingredients there is no wonder—the foundation of both knowledge and wisdom is undermined. We have divided our book according to seasons; we have illustrated our division pages with Indian children beaming with wonder as leaves fall, as snow flakes drift sparkling down, and as the first spring flowers amaze and delight with pleasant odors. We have done this hopefully; we hope our readers will be reminded that the sense of wonder is never obsolete; that it is fundamental to our achievement as a species. We hope that as we stand upon the threshold of space, we will remember to be awed by infinity; that we will retemper our knowledge with a sense of awe and gain the wisdom which we need so desperately. In the content of our book you will find the academic emphasized. This is only natural in a time when national emergency demands a re-emphasis on knowledge and skill. This is the age of brainpower. With this effort we seek to honor that in man which makes him man—the sense of wonder which grows into knowledge and, hopefully, into wisdom. 4 CONTENTS FALL 10-63 WINTER 64-107 SPRING 108-156 ADVERTISING 157-173 BOARD OF EDUCATION LOGAN CITY SCHOOLS Harold Sommers Dr. Frederick W. And to the high school mind there comes a vague, exalted sense of lucidity. Im- posed by the mystic, invigorating crispness which displaces the mellowness of fading summer, this feeling—a composite of renewed mental vigor, sadness, and a tingling in the blood—is the very best one for going back to school, learning new facts, ideas, processes, enjoying football games, marching in the band, attending wiener roasts, pil- ing on wagons filled with hay, kicking your way home through fallen leaves, and singing old, romantic songs. Fall is a wonder! 10 OUR FACULTY In the tall a student's fancies lightly turn to thoughts of . . . old friends, valued friends—our teachers. Back from the universities and summer positions they come to do a job we can't envy them. In spite of headaches and frustrations by the score, they succeed in making us think . . . about verbs, and square roots, and amoebas, and presidential elections, and physics formulae, and Macbeth's di- lemma, ad infinitum—no small task. For guidance and advice, for organization sponsor- ship, for all the little chores and plans they help us with, we owe them our thanks. Inexperience played a big part in the Chieftains' loss. Gary Brenning was the leading ground gainer with an average of six yards per carry. In the second game of the season the Chiefs nearly upset the Washington Court House Blue Lions. Ronnie Brimner and John Sigler scored Logan's two touchdowns. The Chieftains earned their first victory of the new season by romping over Hillsboro, 30-0. Quarterback Larry Bainter gave a standout performance by passing for two touchdowns and running for a third. Two freshmen playing noteworthy performances were Robbie Johnson and Bob Big Daddy Stewart. In the S.E.O.L. opener the Chiefs defeated Nelsonville, 42-14. The Greyhounds scored the first touchdown, but after that the Chieftain offense started clicking and Logan took command of the game. Fine blocking was turned in by tackle Phil Woltz, end John Sigler, and halfback Gary Brenning. The big play of the game was a bootleg around right end by Bainter as he raced for 47 yards. The Chiefs fell to Athens 26-6 on their second league counter of the season. The Bulldogs greatly outweighed the Chiefs and boasted the biggest line in the S.E.O.L. with a line average of 2 10 pounds. Fine defensive play earned the Chiefs an 8-6 triumph over a stubborn Pomeroy squad before a capacity Parents' Night crowd. Bainter passed to end Robbie Ellinger for the Chiefs' only touchdown. Bainter saved the day by intercepting Pomeroy's attempted pass for points after the touchdown. Although the Chiefs battled all the way, the Gallipolis Blue Devils made Logan their fourth consecutive victory by a score of 32-16. Quarterback Larry Bainter turned in an outstanding performance as he scored all of Logan’s points. A determined Logan squad beat Wellston for the first time since Coach Adams took over the head coaching job at L.H.S. Fullback Ron May scored the first touchdown and Bainter scored the second by intercepting a pass on the Wellston 10 yard line and racing for 90 yards. Outstanding defensive play was the main factor of the game with linebacker Mark Matheny, tackle Phil Woltz, linebacker Dee Gabriel, and end Robbie Johnson turning in fine performances. Logan handed Middleport a 26-6 loss before a capacity Senior Night crowd. Larry Bainter played a tremendous game as he carried the ball I I times for 229 yards and 2 feet. The odd yardage was attributed to a quarterback sneak turned into a 99 yard gallop. The Chiefs closed their season by nearly upsetting Jackson. The Chiefs were greatly outweighed but played a fine game under the handicap. The Ironmen averaged nearly 200 pounds in their forward wall. Junior halfbacks Gary Brenning and Ronnie Brimner turned in their best performances of the season. Bainter connected 10 of 15 aerials for 142 yards. He'll sit in the barn to keep himself warm, And tuck his head under his wing . . And the high school student will don his bulky sweater, burrow more deeply into his books and studies, and pensively wait for spring. Well .... actually, the picture is not quite as glum as that—there are all sorts of interest groups and organizations in which to be involved; there are basketball games; there are long winter nights for sleep- ing, and friendships to be built; there is ice skating, snowballing, and Christmas vaca- tion! Snow is a wonder! 64 SOPHOMORES SOPHOMORES SOPHOMORES Sophomores are busy people. Studies absorb them; activities invite them to new frontiers of friendship and interest-building. One morning we find a violet; bird songs increase in number; our winter clothes feel a bit bulky and uncomfortable. It rains; the rain washes away the vestiges of winter; it makes a quagmire of the world. A longing comes into the eyes of students; the schools are gloomy; the books are boring. Teachers are tired; the jokes are old. Then, of a sudden, there is sun. There is warmth; the grass is green; daffodils bloom; resurrection is celebrated; trees bud; sweaters are discarded; field trips mul- tiply; term projects come due; seniors seem happy, nostalgic; finals come; school ends; GRADUATION! Spring is a wonder! 108 SENIORS . . . SENIORS . . . SENIORS Spring is the season for seniors. Nostalgically, yet with a restless eagerness, they prepare to take places in the world of college campuses, labor markets, and family establishment. The senior year is one of intensive preparation. To lead them in this year of challenging begin- nings, the class chose Karen Brown, treasurer; Jack Miller, Student Council representative; Bill Hammon, vice-president; Susan Wolfe, secretary; and Ron May, president. 110 PAULA ELIZABETH CANTY Y-Teens 2-3; Student Council Vice-President 3; Teen Timers I; GAA 1-2; JCL 1-2; Choir I-2-3-4; Future Nurses' Club 4; Commercial Club 4; Pep Club 1-2-3; Cheerleader 1-2; Senior Class Play: Prom Committee 3. Soon each will go his separate way; Parting time is here. Like autumn leaves on a windy day, We'll scatter far and near. Our teachers we can ne'er repay, They've been a guiding light, Shining along life's wandering way, Steering our footsteps right. In years to come when we hear the toll Of that old familiar bell, We'll long for the school house on the knoll And classmates we loved so well. So to our alma mater site, We bid this last good-by. Long live the purple and the white! Farewell, dear Logan High. —Sharon Walsh Phillip Kramer CLASS SONS To Logan High School We bid farewell— To our friends and faculty That we love so well. When years have passed, Memories recall The badge of purple and white Wi|l be best of all. We now set sail on life's sea. Any fame we attain, we dedicate to thee. Our hearts are sad; Tears fill our eyes. Good friends part—maybe ne'er tc meet again. Our football games, the senior prom, Laughter in the halls are memories gone. We hold the banner Of Purple and White. We, the Class of '61, Bid you a fond farewell. —Paula Kuhn (Tune— Climb Every Mountain ) Representative Moeller congratulates Sharon Walsh, .
