Vol. 48 • Logan High School Logan, Ohio 1 Once Again The Student A student's summer vacation doesn't last very long. He has mentally reduced to about one-tenth of a year his chronometric three months of free will when well are you ready to go back comes sailing through the air with milkweed. Surely it can't be over and gosh, nobody got much done. But, premature as all of high schooldom knows the first semester to be, September, once far way, suddenly appears. And after gaudy, red plaids are exchanged for term-time's brown combed wool and corduroy, half-leashed minds, once occupied with badminton and popsicles at Bill's, try to concentrate on curricula while the old buckeye and all the non-academic world are still having summer. 3 As you look at the cover or riffle through this Aerial's pages, you'll note the theme to be the Chieftain Spirit and crowds. And we hope that interest and memories, along with this symbol, have been woven into the yearbook. Weaving interest into the 1960 Aerial has been one of the less difficult tasks of the staff, for 1959-60 has been one of the most successful school years in the history of Logan High. The school graduated a straight-A valedictorian; welcomed Gibisonville pupils assigned to LHS; honored a District Superior band; and enjoyed one of the school's most successful athletic years. Among our memories are sadly saying goodbye to Superintendent Wallace Blake, to longtime teacher Miss Sarah Rockhold, and to the largest class Logan High has ever graduated. THE COVER Artist Steve Bright's unique, full-color cover mosaic is the product of many days' tedious labor and over 2,500 bits of colored paper. The mosaic received an honorable mention in Scholastic Arts Magazine competition. The design was inspired by a photograph of Logan Senior High School. Contributing to the classes' excellent record were Henry Louisa, Tom Reynolds and Jon Summers, the above neophyte scientists. 14 Faculty FLORENCE LARIMER History DELLA WEBB English SARAH HOLMES English SARAH ROCKHOLD Home Economics Chltf Faculty FLORENCE ELLINGER English, Arithmetic ALICE FRASCH English JAMES DOW Geography MARY LOU ARENA English WILLIAM CECIL Commercial EVEA LOU CARRICO Physical Education DICK MARTIN Arithmetic HARRY WESTFALL Chemistry, Physics, Psychology HELEN SAMS Commercial MARION ALLEN Industrial Arts WAYNE SNYDER Vocational Agriculture DWIGHT DILLER Journalism, Science AAARY RUTH KRINN Latin, Arithmetic MEL ADAMS Mathematics BLANCHE MOOREHEAD Library, Social Studies, Psychology 17 Faculty ARMAND HOUK Instrumental Music PHIL KRAMER Art MINNIE LOUISE BOWEN Vocal Music DICK BUNTZ Instrumental Music, History MERL PRIMMER Biology RUTH TANNEHILL English CHARLES SCHOEPPNER Mathematics LETA SAYRE POTTER History JOE MURTHA Industrial Arts, Driver Ed VIRGINIA BRAUN Speech, English DICK FAULKNER Physical Education RALPH WALKER Science MILDRED KRAUSS English ALLAN McLELLON Social Studies, Science IRIS LOWRY History, Spanish 18 Valedictorian Salutatorian Ruth Lackey SECOND HONOR STUDENT English Scholarship Team DAR History Award Bill Walker FIRST HONOR STUDENT Senior Scholarship Test, Eighth in County Physics Scholarship Team Science Project, Superior in District and Excellent in State Honor David Reed THIRD HONOR STUDENT Merit Scholar Physics Scholarship Team Senior Scholarship Test, First in County, Eleventh in District, Honorable Mention in State Rennselaer Award Science Project, Superior in District and State Joyce Hadley FOURTH HONOR STUDENT Students Cynthia Shull FIFTH HONOR STUDENT Mark Myers SIXTH HONOR STUDENT Merit Scholar English Scholar- ship Team, Eighth in District Senior Scholarship Test, Second in County, Honorable Mention in District 21 1959-60 Straight-A Students Ruth Lackey Bill Walker Linda Sommers Eddie Rutter Vicki Orndoff Science Winners Topping the page are stu- dents who, for each six weeks period, received A's in every sub- ject. Mason Bownes recovers on the ground as quarterback George Stump earns three statistical points from Coach Adams by carrying out a good fake. Despite Kuhn's big push, Logan lost, 18-16, to the Blue Devils. 61 Sixty-Three Man TOP ROW: Coach Harry Westfall, Bill Mowery, Curtis Hilton, Bill Woodgeard, Gary Anderson, Mark Matheny, John Nelson, Duane Swartz, George Stump, Mick Frazier, Gary Stuart, Gary Brenning, Tom Gasser, Alan Adair, Ronnie May, Coach Dwight Diller. And Mentor Coach Mel Adams plays a tight situation from the Chieftain bench. High Hopes Were Higher Than Fourth Finishing Footballers Early hopes for Logan's 1959 football squad were lowered considerably when the Chiefs suffered a couple of bad breaks in mid-season and dropped into fourth place. Logan outscored opponents, 202-74, but 118 of these points were concentrated in two triumphs. The Chiefs boasted a steady defense all season, shutting out two foes, allowing four clubs only one TD and two teams a pair of touchdowns. A fired up squad opened the 1959 season with a bang, upsetting the highly rated Blue Lions of Washington C.H., 12-8. Logan's aggressive de- fense stopped the powerful Lion attack. The George Stump-Mick Frazier pass combination was Logan's most effective weapon. A powerful Chieftain offense steam-rolled to 54-0 victory over Hillsboro in Logan's second pre-league showing. Frazier sparked the Chiefs' offense with three touchdowns and four extra- point conversions. Logan squeaked through the SEOL opener, 16- 14, over Athens. The Bulldogs' 70-yard touch- down at the outset left Logan undaunted, and Butch Kuhn later found paydirt and an extra two points. The Chiefs delivered the payoff punch with a Stump-Frazier pass and Kuhn's six-yard plunge. Leading by 2 points with 1:30 left in the fourth period, the Chiefs earned the victory by holding Athens on the Logan 26-yard line. A 6-6 tie with Pomeroy jolted the Chiefs' cham- pionship aspirations. Both teams showed de- fensive strength, but Logan gave up two po- tential touchdowns on fumbles, one on the Panther two, the other on the Pomeroy 17. A second interception, on the Pomeroy five, killed Logan's chances. An 18-16 loss to Gallipolis further stymied Logan's title hopes. The Chiefs got in a hole on the first scrimmage play when Evans sped 73 yards for a TD. The Chiefs tied it up and scored the last touchdown of the game, but missed scoring the vital two-point conversion. A stubborn band of Chieftains fought un- defeated Wellston to a 6-6 tie. Both teams, 1958 SEOL co-champions, scored in the first half. Four fumble recoveries and two pass interceptions aided the Logan cause. Punter Bill DeLong averaged 33.6 yards on five kicks. A fine defensive night won Logan a 14-6 victory over Middleport. Kuhn led the LHS offense as he churned out five yards per carry on off-tackle slants. Twice Logan turned back potential scor- ing drives by the Middies. The Ironmen of Jackson handed the Chiefs a 16-14 heartbreak defeat and their second league setback, despite a dramatic goal-line stand by Logan. Leading, 14-8, in the final quarter, the Chieftains were holding Jackson on Logan's three. When the Ironmen's Surrett swept end, John Nelson and Larry Bainter brought him crashing to the ground, and he fumbled. The ball rolled to the one, Jackson recovered, and the Ironmen went on to score. The Chiefs closed their season with a 64-0 triumph over Nelsonville, outgaining the Grey- hounds, 505-213 yards. In the first quarter Kuhn opened the scoring with a 79-yard jaunt. Stump completed 5-for-5 passes. 64 All-SEOL tackle Larry Wells gets a bit of minor ankle amelioration from Chieftain Trainer Chris Myers. The Papooses of Coach Harry Westfall copped three victories, suffered four defeats and battled to two ties. Greatest disappointment for the Logan reserves was a 12-8 loss (in the last minute) to the Car- roll varsity. The Papooses showed their best ef- fort in a 14-0 triumph over Athens. The LHS re- serves beat McArthur, 22-0 and Circleville, 22-0, Victors over the Papooses in addition to Carroll were Lancaster BIS, 64-0; Lancaster, 8-0; and Well- ston, 18-10. The reserves tied Berne Union, 6-6. BACK ROW: Gar Anderson, Bill Patterson, Fred Vaugh- an, Gary Brenning, Chuck Daubenmier, Curtis Hilton, Terry Adams, Tom Gasser, Alan Adair, Bill Woodgeard. Coach Charles Schoeppner's eleven faced larger teams through the schedule, but the spirit and drive of the Little Chief line plus backfield lightning carried them past several tough obstacles. Highest point for the never- say-die LHS frosh was a fourth-quarter, three- touchdown comeback at Jackson after the locals had spotted the Ironboys a 14-point lead. The Logan freshmen won the fray, 20-14. Coach Schoeppner's scrappers also downed: Athens, 16-14; Circleville, 32-6; Wellston, 6-0; Bremen re- serves, 6-0. Their only loss, 24-6, was inflicted by Berne Union reserves. Brightest spot in Logan High's grid picture was held by a brilliant eighth grade team. Coach Dick Martin's scrappers won all six of their games. The explosive Logan eighth grade unit outscored opponents, 244-16, averaging 40.7 points per game. They slammed shutouts on four startled foes. BACK ROW: Coach Charles Schoeppner, Frank Tipton, Bob Burk, John Yaw, Gary Dalton, Don Phelps, Tom Wright, Wayne Schmidt. LHS Student Council Pres- ident David Eberst, behind Sandy, officiated. Honored at the Rotary's annual Football Banquet, Logan's three All-South- eastern Ohio League gridders, Larry Wells, Mick Fraizer and Ed Dalton, show they can handle cutlery as smoothly as a big line or pig- skin. Wells and Dalton were 1959 co-captains. Tribal Teammates Take Rebound Chieftains Steve Dalton and Chris Myers wrestle the ball away from Nelsonville's Mike Dexter on Logan's court. And Coach Coach Harry Westfall re- laxes after his Chiefs routed the Wellston Rockets, 93-66. All-League Luminary Logan guard George Stump draws an alarmed expression from his opponent as he fakes across court. An expert ball handler and team leader, Stump was chosen for the all-league cage first team and received All- Ohio Honorable Mention. Cagers Conquer 13 Competitors The Chieftain 1959-60 cage squad came through with its best season since Logan won the South- eastern Ohio League championship in 1950-51. This year the Chiefs finished third in the loop with a 13-5 record, making a real battle of it for a good part of the season. Off to a flying start, Logan won eight of the first nine games. Logan's first contest, against the Bremen Oilers, found Coach Harry Westfall's hoopsters still green after only three practices. The Purple and White came through with a hectic 46-43 win at Bremen. Bill Blake scored 14 points. Much improved after grueling practices di- rected by Coaches Westfall and Charles Schoep- pner, the Chiefs ran Lancaster St. Mary into the floor the second half and scored a 60-46 victory. George Stump contributed 23 points. In their league opener against Athens on the Bulldogs' floor, the Chiefs upset the pre-league favorites, 54-49. Steve Dalton and Stump col- lected 17 and 18 markers, respectively. Athens gained revenge by knocking off the Chiefs in the LHS gym, 77-56. A scorching first quarter which saw Stump hit six straight long shots, proved decisive in Logan's second straight loop conquest at Mid- dleport. LHS won the fray 71-60. Blake led all scorers with 23. Logan had an easy time of it in the return game, winning 74-59. Their third straight league win was the Chief- tains' after a nip-and-tuck contest with Nel- sonville. Blake hit for 17, Stump for 15 and Dalton for 14. The vengeful Hounds trounced LHS on the Nelsonville floor by phenomenal shooting, 76-62. Jackson's Ironmen trimmed visiting Logan, 71- 59, for the Chiefs' first league loss. Stump collected 25 points, while Bill Slavens of Jack- son topped the squads with 27. The Chiefs knocked the Ironmen out of first place in the second round by nipping them, 63-61. Blake scored 19 points, and Stump 18. During the holidays the Chiefs scored a 67-41 triumph over Oak Hill. Stump tallied 22 points for high honors. In their fifth league outing, the Chieftains beat Gallipolis for the first time in nine years, hand- ing the Blue Devils their worst licking in his- tory. The Gallians fell prey, 89-59. Stump garnered 27 points. The second game was also a runaway after a slow first half, with LHS winning, 78-59. Blake had his hottest night, scorching the nets for 28 points. A heart-topping victory was scored at Well- ston as Tom Donahey, a reserve, scored the winning bucket with only five seconds left. The never-say-die Chiefs were down by six points with less than a minute to play; the final score: Logan 66, Wellston 65. In their second meeting, Logan set a 1959-60 scoring mark of 93 points. The Rockets tallied 66. Third time was charm time for Wellston as the Jackson Countians trimmed LHS 60-55 in the district tourney. Stump came within two points of the LHS scoring record by hitting a tourney high, 35 points. Pomeroy's champions downed the Chiefs 68- 53 in the last game of the first round at Logan. The Chiefs were still in the running for three quarters in the second Pomeroy game, but lost 70-59. A 70-54 win over Circleville gave LHS its 13th win in 18 starts. 80 Basketball Lettermen JOHN SIGLER Junior Forward JOHN NELSON Senior Guard BILL BLAKE Co-Captain Senior Forward GEORGE STUMP Co-Captain Senior Guard BOB BURTON Senior Guard CHRIS MYERS Senior Forward HENRY LOUISA Junior Forward STEVE DALTON Junior Center Revived Reserves Roll Up 7-11 Record BACK ROW.- Mike Canty, Gary Dalton, John Trow- bridge, Robbie Ellinger, Jim Donahey, Dick Spencer, Manager Calvin Reynolds. The Logan reserves, by virtue of a 7-11 record, had their most successful season in years. The Papooses, dominated by sophomores and start- ing one freshman, came out on the short end of five squeakers which 10 points would have won. Bill Patterson led in the scoring column. The Logan extras defeated: Bremen, 45-23; Middleport, 26-22; Nelsonville, 43-28; Oak Hill, 30-20; Middleport, 36-24; Nelsonville, 52- 40; Wellston, 2-0. Ending their regular schedule with an 8-2 mark, the Little Chiefs took a 32-20 vic- tory over Pickaway in their opener in the Chil- licothe Jr. High School Tourney, then dropped a 25-23 overtime loss to Bainbridge, the even- tual champion. 82 Freshmen Finish With 3-7 BACK ROW: Don Phelps, Bill Chappie, Dick Brandt, Mike Henry, Pete Culbertson. And it all happened during hardwork- ing Coach Phil Kramer's first year at the helm of the thinclad squad. Logan's title-winning cindermen put their superior depth to work in the season opener, topping New Lexington St. Aloysius, 73-45. George Stump and Larry Wells were double winners. The Chiefs copped their second win in trounc- ing Ironton, 75-43, winning seven of nine run- ning events. Mick Frazier and Stump scored double triumphs. Other LHS winners were Bill Blake, Mark Matheny, Dee Gabriel, Curtis Hilton and both relay quartets. A Chieftain squad weakened by the absence of several key men finished third in a triangular meet at Lancaster BIS. The score: BIS 651 2, Lancaster St. Mary 36, LHS 331 2. In a dual meet at Logan, the Chieftains smashed BIS, 781 2-39' 2. George Stump eclipsed the 880 school mark with a 2:07 time, and Duane Swartz set a track record of 10.1 in the 100. Logan copped a quadrangular meet, with the Chiefs' 82 points far outscoring Athens, Berne Union and Hamden. Logan records tied were the high jump and 100-yard dash. Blake leaped 5'7 and Frazier sped to a century-tying time of 10.2. The half-mile relay team ran the dis- tance in 1:36.5, a new record. Marietta, district champs, steam-rolled the Chieftains, 88-30. Frazier copped both dashes and Blake won high jump laurels. Lancaster's Golden Gales fell before the Chiefs in two dual meets, 691 2-481 2 and 61-57. Blake, in the second meet, soared six feet, a new Logan record. His feat was the more amazing since his best early season mark was 5'3 . Biggest triumph was Logan's unprecedented fourth straight league meet conquest. The 1960 title-holders set five loop marks in their championship quest. Logan scored 96% points in dominating the meet. Bettering records were: Frazier, 10 flat in the 100, and 22.2 in the 220; 880-yard relay team (Frazier, Ronnie Brimner, Swartz and Butch Kuhn), 1:36.8; Stump, 2:07.7 in the 880; Blake, 5'8%'' in the high jump. Capturing six firsts in the District meet, the Chiefs pushed perennial powerhouse Marietta to the limit, but finished second to the Tigers. The district champs came from behind in the last event. St.ump won his events in 4:44.4 and 2:04.5; Frazier topped the sprinters with times of 10.3 and 22.7; Blake leaped 5'9 for a first; the 880 relay foursome placed first with a 1:35.2 school record. Other point get- ters for LHS: Swartz, second in the 100 and fourth in the 220; Dee Gabriel, third in the pole vault, and Mark Matheny, fifth in that event; Wells, third in the discus; Ed Dalton, fifth in the 880; Dan Matheny, Mark Matheny, Brimner and Kuhn, fourth in the mile relay. Stump placed seventh in the-880 in the State Meet and Blake eleventh in that meet. Logan copped the second annual Mingo Relays with a brilliant finish. Host LHS nipped Circle- ville 53-52 for the crown. Other teams were St. Aloysius and Athens. Frazier and Swartz put Logan ahead for keeps in the 220. 92 Bounding Tom Donahey rounds first base aft- er smashing a drive into deep left-center. The Chiefs won seven, lost six and tied one during their winning year. With only two days' practice, Logan suffered a 6-4 defeat at the hands of the Plains Indians. Nearly every squad member got into the fray for Logan. Bob Burton and Gary Stuart each got two hits, and John Nelson clouted a triple. Logan then broke into the winner's column, whitewashing Berne Union, 12-0. Burton went 4-for-5 and Jim Funk smashed a triple and home run. Steve Dalton gave up only two hits and fanned nine. The Chiefs' B squad scored an 8-2 win over the Rockets in a return game at LHS. The Chieftains trounced Lancaster St. Mary 12-3, as Bill Jarrell struck out 11 of the Irish hitters. Later in the season at Lancaster, the Chiefs clobbered the St. Mary nine, 18-4. Logan hammered out 15 hits in that game. In capturing their first league win, the Chief- tains were led by star second-sacker Burton, who smashed three home runs and drove in nine runs. Ace moundsman Steve Dalton earned the victory. Athens won the second game, 10-2, squashing Logan's hopes of a Northern Division championship and loop title. Dalton gave up only three hits. Two of the Bulldogs' base knocks were bases-clearing triples, however. In another early-season game, Lancaster's Golden Gales nipped the Logan aggregation, 10-8. Burton poled a double and triple in four trips to the plate. The Chiefs' first league loss was inflicted by Wellston on the Rockets' field. The score: 4-3. Larry Bainter collected three hits, including a triple, in the first Wellston encounter. Dalton was the losing pitcher. Wellston forfeited the return game at Logan in mid-May. B squad members fought Union Furnace's varsity to a 10-10 tie—the game was called in the ninth because of darkness. Paul Ruff and Larry Gabriel paced the Chiefs with a triple each. Lefty John Sigler limited the War- riors of Union Furnace to two hits in his pitch- ing stint. A 9-0 walloping in five innings, cut short by rain, gave Logan its third league win as Dalton pitched a no-hitter against Nelsonville. Two doubles by catcher John Nelson and triples off the bats of Ruff and Burton helped the well- balanced Chieftain team gain victory. In the return game on the Greyhounds' field the Chiefs were guilty of loose fielding and drop- ped the fray, 10-6. Marietta tripped up the Chiefs in a first-round district tournament game on the hilltop dia- mond. Tiger pitchers limited the LHS batters to three hits in winning 4-3. Bainter banged out two safeties and Dom Donahey got one. Dalton gave up only five hits. Following are season departmental leaders for Logan: Hitting .448, Burton led the team in runs (22), RBIs (17), and extra-base hits (11 including 3 home runs, 4 triples and doubles). Burton, Donahey and Bainter each pilfered 7 bases. Francis Schrader led in getting bases- on—balls, working hurlers for 10 walks. Bill Mowery had 3 sacrifice bunts and 17 assists. Nelson topped the squad in putouts (77). Dalton led the hurling corps with a 4-3 record and 59 strikeouts. Suffering their second straight loss, at Mariet- ta, even though Johns fired a 36-hole 157, low score for the match. Johns picked up 7 of the Chiefs' 17 points. The Tigers tallied 23 points, with most of these earned on the first 18 holes. Breaking into the winners' column, Logan downed New Lexington St. Aloysius, 9V2-3V2, as Lanning contributed 31 2 points toward the win. Continuing their winning ways, the Purple and White shotmakers beat Chillicothe's Ca- valiers on the Hocking Hills' course, 11V2-4V2. Johns shot a fine 38 for 4 points and low medal honors, while Chris Myers and Lanning earned 3V2 and 3 points, respectively. The Chiefs won their third in a row by top- pling Gallipolis and New Lexington St. Aloysius in a triangular match. Lanning's 9-hole 37 and Myers' 40 were low scores for the winners. Host Marietta snapped Logan's string of wins in humiliating the Chiefs 16-0, but in so doing, the Tigers had to shoot a record 310 total. Johns turned in a fine 78. Athens made it two in a row over Logan, smashing the Chiefs, I5V2-V2. Average score for the Athens outfit was 78. Johns scored the LHS fraction of a point by virtue of a 76. A whitewash win over Wellston, 16-0, gave the Chiefs a 4-4 season record. LHS linksmen lost only 3 holes in the win. Johns, Lanning, Myers and Blosser were point-getters in the rout. The Chiefs placed third in the SEOL tourney behind Athens and Gallipolis as Johns fired a 79. The District Tourney completed the season, with Logan finishing to the rear of Athens, Marietta and Chillicothe. Johns again shot a 78. Tennis Coach Harry Westfall's net team blanked Groveport, 5-0 and 4-0, in the Chieftains' only regular season matches. Mike Canty was No. 1 man for the Chieftains, John Summers was No. 2 and Tom Gasser No. 3 in singles mat- ches. Also scoring wins were the No. 1 doubles team of Ed Hockman and Jim Johnson, and No. 2 doubles, Jim McGaw and Roy Willis. Logan netters fell by the wayside in Central District tourney play at Columbus, but Canty and Summers garnered first-round wins. Cross-Country Coach Phil Kramer's harriers topped Belpre in a dual meet for their only triumph. They were second and third in quadrangular meets with Marietta, Huntington and Belpre. Steve Miller was the squad's ace.
