The F1ne Arts Department v' '1 SCHOOL can produce a thorough 'education without the aid and touch of the culture procured from the Fine Arts. The Fine Arts Department has been a very prom- inent and substantial influence in the school. lVIiss Althea Stephens, the director of music, has proved earn herself very efficient in this department, and has directed a number of Agnes Scott, interesting programs. Miss Stephens, a graduate from is very thorough in her Work. Under her supervision and careful instruction she has graduated a number of girls this year. lVIiss Frances Yearly has been with Logan three years. It is useless to commend her for her Work. It sings for itself. The voice department has been very strong this year, and especially has the Glee Club produced some beautiful numbers, the outstanding feature being Yanki San. The Expression Department has reached the acme of perfection under Miss Mary hlargaret Chester. Her pupils have individually shown marked improvement under her instruction. The plays ofthe year, All of a Sudden Peggy, The Prince Chap, and KiM1'S. Bump- stead Leigh, were cast and directed with discrimination and care. As the CROWN goes to press, the spring play, As You Like It,', is being cast, and will conclude a very successful year under the super- vision of Miss Chester. The Art Department has not made as extensive showing as the others, however, the work of llifladame Cabel is unquestionable, and she has done much with her small class. The Home Economics Department has grown steadily, and this year the Work has been outstanding under llfliss Leona Beasley as director. The pupils displayed their skill and ability very artistically in the Sun- day Night Tea Room in Logan, and by the perfectly served teas for the faculty. 3-2 ,- -X ,K be . 'f -F X . Things never before attempted have been successfully undertaken. A sense of responsibility on the part of the student is being seen and felt. A finer spirit of co-operation is being manifested along lines pertaining to college life in general. It is the purpose of those in charge to create a true spirit of democracy on the part of the student, that she may be fitted for the full responsibilities of living as a citizen in a democracy. The Athletic Association evQLZNi SPIRIT of the times demands the most perfect development of :sl aria-. .. - ' ' ' . . . . . which woman is capable. The zum of education is to develop the girls both physically and mentally. It is the purpose of this department to it -:.' 7 develop the girls physically. Through the raising of their standards of health, we hope to increase the efficiency of the students. We hope through the training given to contribute to their health, organic vigor, grace of person, and good physical habits. The Athletic Association provides opportunity for every girl to overcome, by means of corrective and educational gymnastics, faulty posture and abnormal conditions. Logan is excellently equipped for physical education. The new gym, with its splendid basketball court and large inviting swimming pool, is a source of pride and pleasure to all Logan girls. Hiking has held a prominent place among the sports this year. Practically all the girls have been drawn at some time or other into the joys of this outdoor recreation. As the CROWN goes to press, two girls-Ma1'y lllorgan and lVlable Ruth Holladay- have won sweaters through the point system of the Athletic Association in this sport alone. lVIany more lack only a few more miles to entitle them to a sweater. The tennis season has just opened, but from the interest shown this early, it is evident that tennis is to be a prominent sport. Logan has one of the best equipped swimming pools in the South. Swimming has been enjoyed all the year. Probably more girls have indulged in this sport than in any other. Hardly a day has passed without finding girls diving, swimming, or learn- ing to swim. The study of posture has been introduced this year. By bulletins, talks, and ex- ercises, the correct positions of walking, sitting, and standing have been brought to the girls. The basketball season of 1924-25 was quite a success. Miss Funkhauser proved an efficient coach. Logan offered excellent material for a team. During the season the varsity played two games with Evansville College, two games with WCStC1'D College of Bowling Green, and one with Peabody College at Nashville. The second team played Elkton, Olmstead, the varsity, andibeginners' team. These, with the Junior-Senior game, make a total of ten games played during the season. A regular class in gymnasium, under the able direction of Miss Chester, has met twice a week throughout the year and helped much the physical development of the girls. The exhibition of the gym class has come to be one of the popular events of the year. 63 :in X- 412 'N Q- - fi ' z, M ita ,............. .. It all started with the Senior tree. A few weeks after the opening of school-for years and years-the seniors have planted a tree. In the dead of night many a group of seniors have slipped forth with spade and shovel and quietly buried the roots of the beloved Senior tree. For on the fateof the tree depends the fate of the game. If the juniors discover the tree within thirty-six hours after it is planted, they are privileged to dig it up-and that means a Junior victory. If it is not found, it signifies that the Seniors will win. And the sign never fails- never did until this year. For weeks the red and black of the Seniors, and the orange and black of the juniors wave from the roof and windows-every available tree and post of Logan. Such weeks as they are, with each team practicing and working to the utmost, and the rooters keeping the whole school in a storm of enthusiasm. Hardly a meal can be eaten for so much singing. ' Then the night of the game-no one who has ever lived through it will ever forget it. For years the Seniors had won-so, of course, the Seniors thought they would win this year. Even the supposed infallible sign of the Senior tree pointed to a Senior victory. But fate played her cards differently this year. The juniors walked on the floor with determination-they played to win and they won. It was the first Junior victory in six years. It was something new. The Seniors were dazed-the Juniors went wild. It was a night that will long, long be remembered by both juniors and Seniors. 66 N X i l l' I. 5 J UIIKI -fi , .... ... ......... --.. -,-lm... .. ..... ........................... . . .......................,...... .........,..,..,..... . m, -J , il I 2 ee .., Kr-Rx 5 fu MW 4 M The Crown, Nineteen Twenty-ffve Aga : .,.',2. x mm ,,.... s at QQQ X I 1 Yr jug-XXX A M A '.'I'. l. It is a simple beauty, to be sure, but the pic- turesque outcroppings of limestone along the creek beds, the sealy cliffs and ledges, and glorious rolling knobs everywhere, make hiking and exploring constant pleasure to both eye and imagination. , VVith kodak over your shoulder and a bite to eat in your pockets, to go out over the old Nashville Pike, you feel the same glad thrill of well-being at getting back again with nature as your fathers and your grandfathers knew it. There have been many hikes during the year. There are long ones and short ones, and everybody who participates in them is ever afterwards a great booster of hiking. Costumes of every de- scription were in evidence from a stick of candy to an Eskimo. The dancing dolls were very popular young ladiesg gents of all ages visited them. The hula hula girls were striking in their straw skirts. Some wondered why they were not in a sideshow. Spooksburg maintained a waiting line of about twenty-five. Besides having Pedro stump over from our attic as a special feature, many ghosts of pre-historic times came ,along with their skulls and creaking bones to increase the wierdness. Every one, even the clowns, interviewed the crystal gazer, for she was world- famed. Three Steps Inn, afforded a quiet place for lovers and such. Fruit salad and cocoa were the specials. To cap the climax, the Syncopated Eight wailed their different strains through the evening and pepped up the laggards.
