I A Passion for Fashion seems to be the attitude of the students at L.C.H.S. Everyone wants to keep up with what is hot and what is not. These are a few of the students and teachers at L.C.H.S. that seem to always be in style . Candi Cowherd, Rhonda Dotson, Jane Harper, Jama Wil- kins A New Everyone needs a new look at school. The ‘87 88’ school year brought many welcomed changes to the students at L.C.H.S. Moving clockwise the buses have started loading up in front of the school instead of the side to avoid accidents. A nursery has been provided for the first time to help our teen- age mothers and to keep them in school. The nursery provides free all day care for the infants allowing the mothers to spend time with them during their class “Another Chance . Have a Coke and a smile”, is now sung by many students since Coke machines have been in- stalled in almost every hallway, allowing students to take a break and a Coke. Our usual twenty-minute wait- ing period to eat lunch has now decreased to four minutes since every class leaves for lunch at two-minute intervals. The students were given an- other chance to wear shorts of a reasonable length. Another new look at school this year is Mr. Birdwhistell as principal, even though he still gives us the same look! Mr. Bob Nylin is now our assistant princi- pal and athletic director. 4 Feature pBp;il..FCA. the cheerleading squad, at)d the tennis team. Logan County has celebrated the Tobacco Festival. This is an event involving many LCHS stu- dents. This year. LCHS student Tammy Haley was crowned Tobacco Festival Queen, with four more county girls in the Queen’s court. With the Look Logan County and Russellville High Schools are known for their rivalry. But after the games, students from both schools get together and talk as friends, forgetting to be enemies. Both school systems have an agree- ment, that for Logan County’s use of Rhea Sta- dium, Russell- ville has the use of our bus ga- rage and the ALC. Russell- ville's principal, Mr. Mason and our vice-princi- pal, Mr. Nylin can, like the stu- dents, forget the rivalry and be friends. Donna Johnson, a Sen- ior at L.C.H.S. and Tammy Shackleford, a Senior at R.H.S., are the best of friends. L.C.H.S. Senior Tina Chyle and R.H.S. Junior Mike Wilson en- joy each others company. Steve Rouse and Su- zanne Alcott went to L.C.H.S.’s Foot- ball Homecom- ing. Shane Cau- dill and Melissa Atkins represent both schools, with the R.H.S. Panther and L.C.H.S. Cougar in the back- ground. The friendship be- tween the schools outweighs the ri- valship. Enemies or Allies? 16 Feature Front row (l-r): Mr. J. C Deberry. Chairman. Chandlers; Mr Harvey Marksberry. Mr. Thornberry has not only been a teacher, but he has also been a close friend to several students. Often being called the “teenage senior citizen, he says, “Sometimes I find it easier to relate to young people than people my own age. Being around the kids keeps me young. Mr. Thornberry says that he loves every student he has like they are his own children. He has even opened his home to a few students who had nowhere else to go. A student who has stayed with him says, I’d had problems at home, and I had moved out and quit school. Mr. T talked me into coming back to school and told me if I did. I could stay with him as long as I needed to. Even though Mr. Thornberry loves being around the students and will miss it very much, he says. “Teaching is harder now than ever. Students' attitudes are differ- ent now, and they don’t respect their teachers like they used to. After his retirement Mr. Thornberry looks forward to relaxing and doing some traveling. He plans to travel on his motorcycle, a Honda 1100 Interstate. Motorcycle riding has been Mr. Thornberry’s favorite hobby since he first started riding at age 49. That was when he took his first trip to Daytona Beach, Florida. To his students, Mr. Thornberry leaves a word of advice: “Always maintain respect for yourselves and compassion for others. The annual staff dedicates this page to Mr. Thorn- berry with gratitude for his years of compassion and understanding toward his students. Thanks “Mr T Feature '23 Night Custodians - (I • r) H. C. These two direc- tors, Mrs. Martha Bayles and Mr. Charles French, should receive a lot of re • a spect and should be highly - • rewarded for their work as directors. The Cougar Band is excellent in all their achievements. Field Comman- ders Nancy Woodward, senior, and Jennifer Wells, junior, have been doing great jobs as Field Commander for the Marching Cougars. Some students are eager to do so. but others are hos- tile or do not care where they spend their day. Even the most eager stu- dents have days when the last thing they want to do is learn. All students, in other words, need to be motivated at one point or another in their school careers. But what really motivates students? Several students at Logan County were asked what motivates them. Here are their answers: The school spirit here at L.C.H.S. makes me want to strive to do my best to help make the school proud. The Beta Club helps to motivate me because it is such a prestigious club, and it is an honor to be in. My friends help me and encourage me when I need it. My parents have also influ- enced me to try to do my best in school. I believe to reach the goals of my future, I must try to succeed in my work at school. I want to do well, not only to please everyone else, but mainly to please myself. —Tammy Wooldridge. Freshman. What motivates me as a siu- dent? Well, first of all I like to get good grades. No one who is able to do well wants to do bad. A per- son like that is looked upon as a waste of talent by his teachers and the other students. When you do well, you are allowed to have privileges that others don’t have. You are also rewarded with the trust of fellow students and your teachers. Overall, motivation as a student is simple: when you do well, it is advantageous in every way to you. the student.’ ’—Jason Keltner; Freshman mm Teachers try to tell us that what we learn from them will help us in the future. Because they are our teachers, most of us will not listen to what they say. In my opinion, they are right. We, the children of a young country, must learn about the country that will one day depend on us. To know that the future of our country depends on us is what moti- vates me. I feel that we, the children of our country, should be a help to our country, not a hindrance; therefore, that is all the motivation I need to be the best that I can be.” —Sonja Glover, Junior. When I was young, my mother taught me that I was intelligent and could do anything I wanted. She always expected me to make good grades. By good grades, I don't means A’s and B's. I mean she expected nothing less than straight A's. Be- cause of growing up with these high expectations from my mother, I learned to expect big things from myself and to accept no less than perfect. Another important motivation for me is my friends. We all have a unique relationship because we don't compete to see who can make the best grades on an advanced math test or a sociology quiz. We all help and support each other. The most important reason I try so hard is for myself. When I was in third grade, my teacher told me that I wasn’t gifted, but was just average. I have been working every day since then to prove that lady wrong. I enjoy proving to myself that I really can make 100 on a chemistry test or write an excellent pa- per for English. This is the main reason I work so hard. I don't just do it for other people, I do it for me. —Melanie Wright, Senior 56 Feature Why am I sweating my brains out on this track, and I don’t feel any faster. I feel like a lump of lead. Why do I do this and other things? It’s a thrill, to be sure. Why do I blow my guts out playing my trumpet until my lips disown me? Why do I sit up at night writing speeches just so I can go to competitions to get my stomach tied up in knots and most probably lose anyway? I have more than one reason for doing these things, but the main one is I like to exceed people’s expectations of me. I feel that I have truly triumphed if I can run faster than anyone thought I could. If someone runs faster than I. so be it. As long as I exceed people's expectations of me, I am satisfied. I like to be surprising. — Micheal Delk, sophomore You ask me what motivates me? In this world there are many things that do. A few are feeling good about myself, thinking that if I work hard, the Mets will come back for another Series win, and knowing that what I do today will effect what I do tomorrow. —Josh Givens, Sophomore. I am motivated by my parents. They expect so much of me, that I try to do all I can as well as possible. I have high goals and more plans to further my education be- cause of their support. The attitude of the teachers can either make me more or less willing to achieve. A smile on a teacher’s face can make my whole day. — Burnie Rogers, Freshman. Hello. I am a motivated student. I try very hard to keep myself inter- ested in school. The most important thing in motivation is to set goals. At the beginning of the school year I set four goals: to get along with every person at Logan County High School; to have a better out- look; to keep myself studying to stay in BETA Club; and, most impor- tantly, to make my parents the prou- dest parents of any student at LCHS. I know that every person doesn't have the same outlook on school as I do; but if students would just give it a try, I guarantee every person would be much better off. — Paula Hughes. Junior. There was one person who made a 100 on the test! A low mumble runs through the room 'It was Wendy.’ I'm silently praying that the teacher will call my name. If she doesn’t, then I try to control my emotions because I know I can’t always be the best. This motivation from myself is the major reason I try to be better than average. Making a 100 on a test makes me realize why I spend hours working until I please myself. My mom also motivates me. If I need any help anytime, or if I have a problem, all I have to do is ask for her help. She has been leading my brother and me to do our best since we were born and will continue as long as we need her motivation. She has helped me a lot. —Wendy Johnson, Freshman Born with the Look Costelow Paula Alliaon Wins© Angel Amy Murphy Ted Baldwin Penny Appling Tyrone Babb Angela Bailey Mary Lou Baker Tina Baker John Barnes Amy Bray Holli Brown Tammy Burchett Daniel Blackford Allen Canler Steven Baldwin Jennifer Bedel Kellie Byrna Joe Birdwhiatell Rhonda Canler Laurie Burysek Erica Baugh Shane Caudill Tina Chyle Wayne Cole______________Mark Coles______________Angie Collins____________Tommy Collins___________Candi Cowherd Eric Cross Lisa Davenport Marty Davis Denise Davis Jeremy Dawson Michelle Deweese Dwayne Dopel Michael Gant Rick Garrett Rhonda Glass Terry Glover Sonny Gloyd Beverly Goley Chase Gregory Carol Gray Richard Gregory Angela Hardison Jon Henbest Jimmy Henderson Carmilla Hayes Sandra Haley Joe Hendricks Keith Hendrix Paula Harper Jason Harris Erick Hendricks Maggie Henry Sandra Hickman Bob Holman Timmy Houchens Chris Hughes Michael Hughes Scott Hunt Angela Hyde Karla Inaco Jimmy Jackson Kenny Jackson Deneace Jameson Tamme Kutzman Barry Johnson Chris Kinser Elmer Jenkins Donna Johnaon Neil Johnson Wendy Mallory Clint Marksberry Glenn Milam Steven Lyne Janice McFall Timmy McLellan Lynn Miller Rodgie Millett Billy Moore Paula Pamela Morrison Bonnie Moss Russell Nash Gary Parker Sherri Penick Daniel Poore Bobby Porterfield Cheryl Powell Natalie Shelton Cheryl Scarbrough Kriati Sears Teresa Rust Steve Rouse Susan Runyon Paul Stevenson Marsha Stamps Sherry Smith Danita Shoemake Barbara Shoemake Lora Stahl Brian Stratton Dana Summers Kelly Tapp Lisa Taylor Tiffany Taylor George Thomas Rick Thomason Sheila Thomason Kenneth Valentine Lori VanCleave George Vanderpool Wendy Warden Sarah Whitescarver Teressa Whittemore Teneoda Washington Larance Watkins Polly Wilson Tracey Wood Alissa Woodall____Regina Woods______Nancy Woodward Melanie Wright______Rhonda Young 62 Feature Amy and Abby Will Jeanette and Jennifer Fitzhugh The 1988 seniors of Logan Coun- ty High, in their most unforgettable year, all wish they could leave a re- minder of all the good times they have had. Logan County High had an assembly in honor of the Constitution's birthday. (Clock- wise:) Mr Birdwhistell told the students to be proud to be Americans. Mr. Riley led the entire student body in prayer. Gary Parker, senior class president, led the Pledge of Allegiance The Star Spangled Banner was sung beautifully by junior Alvy Holloway, and seniors Chris Hughes, Timmy McClellan, and Gary Parker. In the second game Metcalfe Co. scraped by 3-0. The stunned Cougars traveled to Todd Central where they suffered their sec- ond loss of the season. The Cougars could not afford to think the defeat in practice the next week because their opponent of that Friday was Warren East, the same team that beat them 61-20 a year earlier. The Cougars pulled out a home- coming victory that went down to the wire 32- 30. Riding high from their victory, the Cougars beat Breckinridge Co. and Butler Co. Going to Edmonson Co..the Cougars ran into a buzz-saw, losing handily to the Wild- cats. Afterwards, the team couldn't come up with a single point in the Allen Co. or South Hopkins games. In the last chance for a district title, Logan Co. hung tough to shut out McLean for three of the four quarters showing the only two scores of the ball game to come in the sec- ond period. Logan could not anawer the two scores, losing the game, the district title, and the first chance for a playoff berth in Logan Co. histo- ry, 14-0. Considering the abundance of injuriea this year, the team should be proud to have achieved the goals they did. 72 Sports JV Cougars FIRST ROW Jerry Williams. Chris Holloman. Charley Dauley. Secretary Catherine Holloway. President Tina Chyle. Vice-President Laurie Burysek. Reporter Tiffany Ezell. Thousands of teenagers are killed each year in alco- hol related traffic accidents. The purpose of SAOD (Stu- dents against Driving Drunk) is to cut down the number of teenage deaths on the highway by explaining that drinking and driving is deadly. The SADD officers feel that if we can somehow keep one student from driving drunk, the club will be worthwhile Last year Tina Chyle, with the help of FHA. started organizing SADD She had a poster contest in which anyone in the school could participate. The first year of SADD at LCHS has been fairly suc- cessful An average of 50 students come to the after- school meetings. During our first meeting. Mr Birdwhis- tell was chosen to be this year's honorable chairman. All the members were required to sign the Contract for Life” and have their parents sign. This contract states that the teen will notify his or her parents if he or she becomes too intoxicated to drive and vice-versa Mr Birdwhistell chosen honorary chairperson at first meeting. 131 Clubs SCIENCE Tina Chyle. Gary Parker. Kevin Davis, and Catherine Holloway, to learn more about the state-wide project. The kick-off to the project was a breath-taking speech by Pete Collins of the Mississippi State Patrol Sgt. Collins left the students speechless as he told of the many fatal results of drinking and driving, and the many acci- dents he has witnessed Parents, faculty, and students attended an assembly meet- ing to organize committees to plan the Project Graduation Party The all- night party was designed to prevent students from being injured or killed in alcohol-related accidents.
