THE 1987 COUGAR Volume V Presented by the 1987 Cougar Yearbook Staff Logan County High School Route 6 Box 850 Russellville, Kentucky 42276 5 YEARS This year marks the fifth anniversary of Logan County High School. Consolidation of the five countv high schools has been a tremendous success and has offered many new aspects to high school life in Logan Countv. Ot course, one ot the first new aspects even one thinks ot is the change in the sports program, l or the first time in Logan County history, we have a football team that lias gone trom a very inexperienced team to a major contend- er in this region under the coaching of Mr. Steve Hans. X'e have a highly successful track team that has given us several state w inners including an individual state win- ner in the lUOm. dash, a third place winner in the 4 X)rn. dash, and a State A A championship in the HXhn relav Logan County has had a very successful baseball team under the coaching of Mr. David Billingsley. The Cougar baseball team s achievements include a district champion- ship and a high rating at the Doyle Baseball School in Florida. The school also has a tennis team that has given the county students all a chance to participate. Probably the biggest thrill so far was the win- ning of the KHSAA State Basketball Champion- ship in 1984 under the coaching of Mr. Gerald Sinclair. Logan County High is large enough to require two administrators. Mr. Howard Gorrell. a former principal at Auburn, is head principal. He has a tremendous job. but he does a tremendous job. 1 le is a very admirable man. Mr. Ik b Birdwhistell is Logan County High's assistant principal He was formerly head coach and a teacher at Lewisburg High School. Mr. Birdw histell is in charge of disci- pline and he is also the athletic director. Mr Bird- whistell also has a tremendous job and he. too. is highly respected. Disciplinary actions are always needed, especial- Iv in larger institutions. A new development that can about trom the consolidation was the assigning of deter tion hall to those students who have minor discipln problems. Another development was in school susper sion. or I.S.S.. which was assigned to those students wb are habitual offenders. It is designed to stimulate th students to do better in school and to become betft citizens in our community The students are separate from other students and banned from school activity 2 ANMVI.RSARY LATER... This year, senior English students having a B average or above and a 17 or better on the ACT were given the chance to participate in a college program from Western Ken- tucky University. The program SPAN is actually college English being taught at the high schools. The students in the program will receive college credit for the course and grades from Western. Several new courses were offered at Logan County High that many of the smaller schools never had. Computer, chemistry■. business and industrial arts classes, as well as a wider variety of home economics classes have been added. French and Spanish are both available now. and most departments have expanded on their course offerings. Many new organizations were formed as a result of consolidation. A new Beta Club evolved from the honor societies throughout the county. DEC A. Distributive Edu- cation Clubs of America, was formed to help students interested in retailing. The Diamond Club. Athletic Boost- ers. and Fellowship of Christian Athletes were all new support groups for athletics. The Span- ish Club. Student Council. Science Club. Speech and Drama Club. FBLA. Spirit Boost- ers. and Academic Boosters are all new to Lo- gan County students. Students have a choice of three diplomas each having different requirements. A wider variety of food is offered in the cafeteria Near- ly every aspect of student life has been af fected by Logan County High School. The facilities at LCHS have also changed during the last Five years. The campus has gained a beautiful baseball field, an impressive track, and a good football practice field. A county maintenance garage was also built. There has been little damage or destruction of the facilities. The students and custodial staff should be commended because our school still looks 'brand new. Logan County High has been a great success! The stu- dents adapted very well to bigger classes and more traffic in the hallways. The students, as well as the whole commu- nity. have accepted Logan County High School as an educational advancement for our county. Academically. L.C.H.S. offers more than any of the five county schools ever did. A successful aca- demic team has been formed that gives students the opportunity to par- ticipate in a growing tradition of aca- demic excellence. The academic team recently competed in the K.E.T. Scholastic Challenge program, and has had a great record under the coaching of Mr Mark Bennett. An Academic Boosters dub has been formed by the parents and stu- dents of the community to help rec- ognize students for academic achievements. The gifted education program was formed to help qualified students achieve even greater academic stan- dards during their high school years. From the program came the forma- tion of honors classes and advanced placement classes. LCHS has offered honors English for the past two years and advanced placement classes in history. English, and biology. Ad- vanced placement classes give the students the chance to study subjects extensively and possibly to receive college credit for that subject. Their friendship began in elementary school at Auburn and we have no doubt that it will last forever. © Eddie Schweers, Marvin Wells, and Keith Taylor, also friends since their early days at Lewisburg. might best be called ’The Three Muske- teers.” We are not sure when Brian Perry, Mike Smith, John Price. Dawson Motsinger, Kevin Mimms. Johnny Long, and Jason Harper became buddies with their Adairville and Olmstead backgrounds, but one thing s for sure—they are now! Newer friendships, of course, have formed since students have met at LCHS. A good example is iwo opposite ends of the county. Auburn and Olmstead, combining in the friendship between Tracey Barrow and Kim Ferguson. Perhaps the newest and most unique friendship will be between Jeanie Williams from Lewisburg and Hanne Eskeland from Norway. Jeanie's family has shared their home with Hanne this year and made her a part of the family. Many other examples of Friends Forever could be cited in this year's senior class. You know who your best friend is; hopefully, this page will remind you of that special person. Working part-time after school has become a way of life for many teenagers. The seniors of 1987 are no exception. Some examples are Chuck Noe who works at Texaco, and Chris Dowell, who works at Pizza Hut. Working on the farm, especially in the tobacco patch, is also a typical job for Logan County seniors. Brian Perry has worked on his family’s farm for several years. Denton Bagby is an employee at Walmart, and David Fitch earns his money at Houchens. To find Nikki Doss. Tracey Scarbrough. Tina Watkins, Mindy Gibbs, Tammy Dilliha, Shelia Sharp, Steve Lyne, and Cyndie Robey, one only has to visit McDonald's for their friendly service. Logan County students are fortunate in having many different opportu- nities to work in these and other local businesses, and countless others are employed part-time. We think that says Logan County High produces hardworking, worthwhile citizens. SENIOR LIFE 7 TAKING The more things change, the more they stay the same, is an old expression, but it still applies to what seniors like to do in their spare time. Of course many seniors are involved in band, sports, and other extra-curricular activities, but probably their favorite times are just hangin' out. cruisin', and of course eating! Seniors have enjoyed the courtyard this year to just relax during lunch and visit with friends. Other popular meeting places are Hardees. Pizza Hut. and McDon- ald's. It is during their leisure time when they are just taking it easy that life-long friendship will develop and some of their best memories will be made. lO SENIOR LIF COUGAR STYLE WHAT’S COUGAR STYLE IN E-TJSii t - Fashion is your statement to others. It's the casual, western look of blue jeans and jackets. It's baggy, patterned sweaters and tight, ski pants or skirts. It's cowboy boots or high-top tennis shoes. Or wearing your hair like you just appeared on MTV or down-to-earth with a bob. It's wearing your sunglasses at night. It's wearing clothes your mom wore when she was a teen: loop earrings and silver or gold shoes. It's wearing four watches. It’s unique! FASHION 13 Tobacco Festival 14 TOBACCO FESTIVAL THE LOGAN COUNTY TOBACCO FESTIVAL is probably one annual event that involves more students than any ocher. Usually twenty to thirty girls enter the beauty pageant. The parade involves most clubs and school organizations. Of course, the band is involved, not only in the parade, but also in the band contest. This year the Marching Cougars won First place in their division. Students involved in 4 H, Boy Scouts. Girl Scouts, gospel singing groups, and other community organiza- tions are always visible. Many students help serve at the Tasters' Luncheon, run games at the Kiddie Parade, and build floats. Others participate in events such as tobacco spitting and outhouse racing. MOVING CLOCKWISE we caught some of this year's participants: several beauty contestants, relieved that they are off-stage; Miss Congeniality, Valorie Page; Loria McKinney waving to the crowd; Mike Gibbs with the Challengers, who won First place in the talent show, the DECA officers and the football team spreading the spirit; the First-place winning Beta Club float, and the queen s court featuring Valorie at front. TOBACCO FESTIVAL IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF Travis Darnell Duncan December 4, 1969-May 16, 1984 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war. and a time of peace. Bob Birdwhistell, PRINCIPAL. Howard Gorrell 0 F F 1 C E Who is dreaded by some, loved by others, and willing to kiss a pig' Mr. Birdwhistell is rumored to be an easy gotng guy. He is the disciplin- ary figure in this school and, al- though he gives plenty of pink slips, students respect his authority and decisions. He listens to students' opinions and takes them into con- sideration. More than once he has listened to student committees con- cerning rule changes and has been a welcome visitor at student council meetings. After his heart attack last spring, Mr. Gorrell's popularity with the student body became extremely evi- dent. Concerned students and facul- ty prayed for his speedy recovery and their prayers were answered when Mr. Gorrell returned as head principal at Logan County High School this fail. The administrative job of a 900-plus student body school is tremendous, and. as usual. Mr. Gorrell is handling it very effi- ciently. This is an accomplishment in itself, but he has had to overcome some difficulties that most teachers do not. Having taught 25 years at Chandlers, Mr. Lee says that he enjoyed the closeness and the ability to devote more time to getting to know the students there. He says he especially felt close to students whose parents he taught. Even though I was nervous about coming to Logan County High and would have preferred to stay at Chan- dlers. I've really enjoyed being here and have been surprised that everything has gone so well. Reluctant to talk about his physical problems, he has suffered during the past fifteen years. Mr. Lee says, The students and faculty haven’t treated me any dif- ferently because of it. and I prefer it that way. I’ve learned to accept it and so has everyone else. Mr. Lee suffers from a disintegration of the hip joint which makes it very hard and painful for him to walk. This last year at LCHS has not been any kinder to him. Early in the year he was diagnosed as having some heart problems. He also had to miss school to help care for his mother who was very ill. Other faculty members praise and respect Mr. Lee. Mrs. Rebecca Kemp, chairman of his department says, Mr. Lee is very devoted, strong-willed, and worthy of the respect and consideration he receives from his stu- dents and fellow teachers. His calm and easy-going manner has contributed to his success as a teacher. Our department will miss him next year. Mr. Gorrell says that he has had a good rapport with Mr. Lee during his last five years at Logan County High, and he wishes him a happy retirement. Mr. Lee and his wife Margie live about three miles from Chandlers where he also farms. They have two sons. After he retires, he plans to continue some farm- ing, but hopes to find some new things to keep him busy. Optimistically, he says, Teaching hasn't always been a bed of roses, but the good has outweighed the bad. He says that many other jobs pay better, but that if he had it to do over, he would still choose this profession. To future teachers he advises. Go to college and learn everything you can. but when it comes to teach- ing, you’re going to have to more or less throw away the books, and find your own technique. He also believes that today's teachers have to be totally dedi- cated to remain in the classroom for 30 years. To the seniors of Logan County High, he says he wishes a long and happy future. To Mr. Lee, the annual staff dedicates this page in recognition of his dedication, his optimism, and his perseverance. We wish him a long and happy retire- ment. Thank you. Kentucky 42276 502-726-8454 Challenge to the Class of 1990 Dare to Be Original Originality could be the motto of this year’s freshmen class. The first class to have gone through the new Freshmen Orientation Night, sponsored by the Academic Boosters, it is noted for its high academic achievement. Two examples of this are the high number of students in honor and high level classes and the undefeated season of the freshmen academic team. This class will begin their adult” life after graduation in the spring of 1990, the new decade which will lead us into the twenty-first century. For these reasons the Cougar staff wishes to challenge the freshmen class to continue to be original. Being original means being unique. Few people dare to be themselves during high school. Most try to fit in with a clique, sometimes abandon- ing personal values rather than asserting their own beliefs. The seniors of 1987 would challenge you to do some of these things: (1) Don’t go along with the crowd; stand up for what you believe. (2) Set goals and strive to reach them within the next three years. (3) Take classes you’re interested in and will benefit to you after graduation. Don’t look for the easy way out. (4) Choose friends who are original, who say what they think and aren’t afraid of peer pressure. (5) Try out for sports you like, not what your best friend likes. (6) When you feel you are being pressured into doing things you would rather not do or don’t feel are right, have the courage to stand up for your own convictions. (7) Remember that you are unique, and you do not have to be like everyone else. (8) Be proud of your school and continue to be a class that the school is proud of. (9) Remember that you make a statement through your actions and reactions. People judge not only you, but your school by the things you say and do. (10) Above all, remember that you have three more years to become the kind of adult you want to be. Everything that you need to prepare you is here, if you will just take advantage of it. We, the Cougar staff, dedicate this page to you because we think you are impor- tant to the school and our family.” We wish you good times, good memories, and the ability to be original. Robert Beauchamp came to LCHS with a wheelchair and a smile. The former Auburn student had been burdened with muscular dystrophy most of his 14 years, but his happy face and quick wit kept him from being a burden to anyone. Mrs. Carol Parker, one of his teachers, says knowing Robert made her a better person. Through his weakness I gained strength,” she says of the way he handled his crippling ailment. He was a lover of life who still cared for people in the hospital. He never let MI) control his life; instead he let his personality show through.” Robert taught me never to give up and always to have courage,” says a classmate. Greg Stinson. From the joy and happiness he always had in his voice, you would never know that he had a health problem. It takes courage to always keep your head up and to be cheerful, but Robert never gave up his fight for life.” The one thing I wish could be learned from Robert would be for the many students whom God has given a healthy mind and body not to let this gift go to waste,” says Assistant Principal Bob Birdwhistell. Many days I spend my time with students who don't try' and I think of Robert, who gave life all he had.” Robert became something of a media celebrity when he was visited in the hospital December 10, 1986. by Denny Crum, coach of the national champion Louisville Cardinals. Perhaps it was the inspiration that Robert gave the coach that helped U of L upset Western Kentucky University that night. Robert Beauchamp's fight for life ended in early January of 1987. He wras mourned by many people, including the students and teachers at Logan County Hi«h School. A memorial scholarship in his name has been established by the Auburn Optimist Club and will be presented annually to a LCHS senior. 70 FEATL’RF. CLUBS OF Ai AMERICA SENIORS FIRST ROW Hanne Eskeland. Academic Team provides an outlet The purpose of the Academic Team is to provide an outlet for students who excel in academics in the form of interscholastic competition. Logan County High School competes in the Fourth Region Academic Conference on three levels freshman, lunior varsity, and varsity. The varsity also competes in the Governor's Cup statewide playoff. KETs Scholastic Challenge, and other invitational tournaments. Competition in the fourth Region Conference consists of competition on all three levels with each of the 13 other members. The season culminates in a conference tournament. The Governor s Cup involves academic competition and tests. It is equivalent to a State Tournament of Academics. Talent Search is designed to counsel high school students providing them with information on various colleges and careers. A participant in this program must demonstrate potential to do well in college and must be a junior or senior. Upward Bound is a federally funded program designed to provide students with tutoring and counselling services which generate skills and motivation necessary for their success in college. It is divided into two components one during the school year and one during the summer where the participant attends college for six weeks. Logan County has the largest enrollment in the area for the new SPAN program offered through Western Kentucky Univer- sity. The program is designed to give seniors the opportunity to obtain college credits while earning high school credits. Advanced placement classes are offered in history and Eng- lish. Mrs Carol Parker and Mrs. Rebecca Christmas are the teachers. The classes follow the curriculum established by the College Board. Students who take the classes may take the AP test in May and earn up to six hours of college credit. 88 ORGANIZATlONS Attending the National Cheerleading As- sociation Cheerleading Camp had to be the highlight of our summer. July 22, 1986 was the first day of camp. After a month of prep- aration, we finally felt ready. Our schedule was very strenuous, starting at 8:00A.M. and finishing at 9.00P.M. We attended various classes including: pon-poms. cheers, gymnas- tics, and sidelines. But all of our hard work paid off! On the last day we were nominated to compete for the camp title. There are two different divisions, one for floorcheers and one for sidelines. After sit- ting there clapping for the other squads, we were suddenly hearing our name! After a cou- ple of seconds of numbness, reality hit us. We now would be competing with some of the best cheerleading squads in Kentucky! Since we knew the sideline by heart, no preparation was needed, all we could do was wait! Our cheer was perfect and we got honorable men- tion and ribbon for competing. During the entire week we received ten blue Superior ribbons, one red Excellent ribbon, and a spirit stick, which we shared with Girls Varsity. After receiving these awards we truly felt we deserved the title of Logan County Cheer- leaders. Having acquired many new skills at sum- mer camp, we wanted to share these with future Logan County Cheerleaders. We held a county wide clinic on Sept. 6 at L.C.H.S. for girls in grades 1-8. The clinic was attended by about seventy-five young ladies. Kathy Coker, soph . Veronica Taylor, fresh.. Angela Allison, soph Jennifer Wells, soph . Scaci Cooes, sr.. cape.. PEOPLE BEHIND THE TEAM Assistant Coach Mike Herrald, Head Coach Steve Eans. Assistant Coach David Beckner. Assis- tant Coach Clarence Stumpy Baker MANAGERS: Josh Givens. Bridget Blick, Chad Glover The 1986 Logan County Cougars football team has had many memorable mo- ments. Most remember the almost upset of Glasgow that ended in a 29-13 loss and we’re all trying to forget the 61-20 beating from Warren East. The Cougars ended this memorable season with an 8-2 record, establishing a firm foundation for the young program to build on. This year's coaching staff deserves a lot of credit for the hard work they put into practice and each game. They helped each player to not only become a better football player but a better person. Head Coach Steve Eans was in charge of everything overall. Assistant Coach Mike Herrald was in charge of the receivers and the defensive backs. Assistant Coach David Beckner was in charge of the offense and offensive backs. Assistant Coach Clarence ‘ Stumpy Baker was in charge of the defense. Para-Professional Staurt Bundy was the linebacker coach. Trainer Robert Doughty was the head of the managers. The fifteen seniors are leaving behind records that will be hard to surpass and some insurpassable. On defense. George Fugate became the all-time leading tackier with 102. Micheal Pooh Elliot became the leader in interceptions with 11. On offense Tyrone Babb became the leader in touchdown passes with 7. Ron Sams became the First receiver to catch more than 23 passes in a single season, have more than 1,000 yards receiving in a career, and have caught more than 30 passes in a career. Lee Proctor became the First back to rush for over 1,000 yards in a single season, the First to score over a hundred points in a season and career, and the First to get a football scholarship. He will attend Morehead State University. On the All South Central Team, Lee Proctor made 1st team running back, Ron Sams and Tyrone Babb made honorable mention. On the Western Kentucky Conference Team, Tryone Babb—quarterback, Ron Sams—receiver, and Lee Proctor—tailback made 1st team. Joey Todd, George Fugate, and Shane Neely made honorable mention. On the All State Team Five players received honorable mention; Tyrone Babb— safety. George Fugate—offensive lineman. Chris Penrod—defensive lineman, Lee Proctor—running back, and Ron Sams—receiver. The 1986 Cougars football team was more than just a team. It was a big family with each member making a very important contribution to keep the family together. The practices were hard and rough, but every one held together to become winners. No other Logan County football team will accomplish the feat that this team did. They established a winning football team that gave their school and county some- thing to be very proud of. George Fugate. Scott Johnson. Doyce Lagrone, John Barry. Chris Penrod. Joseph Rose Trainer. The Cougar Band consists of 63 playing members, 22 auxiliary and two field commanders. The band started work during a week of band camp July 28 August 1. Much hard work went into learning music and drills. The season was opened at the Caverna field show September 20 with the band winning first place and the auxiliary award. September 27 a third place trophy was won at Franklin-Simpson. Next came the Russellville competition October 11 and Butler County the 18. During both performances of Free-Fare, the group stressed that you don’t have to do drugs to have a good time. The group was able to do this by being able to perform and feel great and still not do drugs. Can you think of your worst day, your best day or your future dreams and wishes?
