Eternal Father, strong to save. Whose arm hath bound the restless wave. Who bidd ' st the mighty ocean deep Its own appointed limits keep; Oh, hear us when we cry to Thee, For those in peril on the sea. In memoriam: Edwin W. Peterson Lost at sea, April 18, 1969 m _ S3t0y :i USS LOFBERG DD-759 USS LOFBERG is named for Commander Gustav Brynwolf Lofberg in recognition of his conspicuous gallantry against enemy forces in World War n. LOFBERG is a 2200 ton short-hull destroyer of the Stunner class, modified under the Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM n) program. Her keel was laid in No- vember, 1943, by the Bethlehem Steel Company in San Francisco. She was completed a year later and commissioned on Novemtier 26, 1944. After a shakedown cruise, LOF- BERG was ordered to the Western Pacific, but was too late to reach the forward area prior to the cessation of hostilities. In late 1945, LOFBERG became the flagship for Commander, Mine Squadron THREE, who controlled the clearing of mines from the waters surrounding Japan. This was followed by courier and patrol duties along the coast of China. After returning to the United States, LOFBERG served as reserve training ship and later as the flagship for Commander Destroyer Squadron SEVEN. Early in 1951, dviring the cold winter months of January and February, LOFBERG saw her first combat action. She joined the battleship MISSOURI in the Ixjmlardment of Hangnum, Kangsong and Kangung on the east coast of Korea, and later escorted the Mighty Mo to Inchon. The ship also participated in the sL week long txjmbardment of Wonsan later in the conflict. LOFBERG made seven cruises to the Western Pacific between the time of the Korean Armistice and the beginning of her FRAM overhaul period in 1961. Assignments con- sisted of extensive Hunter-Killer Group operations, patrol of the Formosa Straits and duty with the fast carrier attack forces of the U.S. SEVENTH Fleet. Commander De- stroyer Squadron SEVEN ' S flag remained aboard until December 1959. The Rehabilitation and Modernization program at Hunter ' s Point Naval Shipyard changed LOFBERG ' s configuration and provided entirely new electronics and weapons systems. The ASW (Anti Submarine Warfare) capabilities of the ship were increased with the installation of a new longer range sonar, a DASH (Drone Anti Submarine Hel- icopter) system and a variable depth sonar. With the completion of the 4 million dollar overhaul in mid 1962, LOFBERG again put to sea and participated in extensive ASW operations off the California coast and in the Western Pacific. LOFBERG has been active in virtually every phase of destroyer operations in the Vietnam war effort. She has patrolled the Vietnam coast and seen rescue destroyer duty on Yankee Station, fired naval gunfire support missions and participated in sev- eral search and rescue efforts. During the 1968-69 cruise, the 16th tour of duty in WESTPAC, LOFBERG fired thousands of rounds of five inch ammunition in support of allied troops In the I, n and ni Corps areas of South Vietnam. She participated in extensive ASW operations in the South China Sea with USS HORNET (CVS-12) and Anti Submarine Warfare Group FIVE; and also served as plane guard for USS HANCOCK (CVA-19) and USS R NGER (CVA- 61) in the Gulf of Tonkin.
