'e 43 ' Q -1. n-I' .,. vi 1, .6 On January 21, 1968 at 12:11, the USS LOFBERG and her crew crossed the equa- 5101-,at ,Latitude oO Longitude 1O5OE. Twenty-four hours before, the cele- bration in favor of the Pollywogs began, and the Shellbacks were chased, ran down, tied up and sprayed with water. The Poly- wogs , however, hadn't counted on what was to follow the next day. This was to be Shellback Day and even though all was in good fun, the shellbacks were plotting against the Pollywogs. On the day of our crossing, Shellbacks dressed as pirates, took on a superior air and pollywogs scattered for safety. Safety was soon lost,though, and the initiation Lnfbc' g fl Z5 the Pollyufvg Day began. After the spraying, crawling, dips in the garbage chute, and kissing of the royal baby'sobelly were complete, Shellback con- gratulated Shellback, and not one Pollywog existed aboard the LOFBERG. A small group of LOFBERG people got to ride an Army helicopter to see a ll Corps ShoBom mis- sion from the receiving end. Then in return a group of Army Officers and men came aboard for a one day visit to see a Navy Destroyer shoot and rearm at sea. The visits were most enjoyable for all concerned and interesting to all of us.
