Before FRAM The LOFBERG completed a seven month conversion at the San Francisco Naval Shipyard. Under the Navy's FRAIVI lFleet Rehabilitation and lvlodernizationl program, many ships from World War ll are being similarly converted, thereby extending their service for several years. Among the nevv installations aboard the LGFBERG are the DASH lDrone Anti-Submarine Helicopterl vveapons system, Variable Depth sonar, Combat Information Center and Anti-Submarine-Warfare Center, as well as numerous electronicreauipments. The USS LGFBERG is named for CDR. Gustov B, Lofberg, USN, in recognition of his conspicuous gallantry in action against enemy forces during World War II. On September 4, l942, off Guadalcanal, CDR. Lofberg as Commanding Officer of the USS LITTLE challenged the numerically superior Japanese force which vvas shelling American positions on the Island. His ship scored numerous hits upon the enemy before being spotlighted by tvvo .lapanese destroyers and caught in a curtain of fire. The LITTLE vvas set a fiame and sunk. CDR. Lofberg lost his life during the battle. Commissioned in November IQ44, LGFBERG arrived in the West Pacific too late to participate in hostilities. The ship vvas in Pearl Harbor vvhen the Japanese surrendered on Q August l945. A In the years after the vvar, LOFBERG assisted in the clearing of minefields, serving as the flagship of Com- mander lvline Squadron Three.. Returning to the United States, she served as training ship for the Naval Station at Treasure Island, and participated in routine destroyer ekercises from Alaska to San Diego. In lQ5l, the LGFBERG joined the battle-ship MISSOURI in the bombardment of Hungnam, Kansong, and Kangung on the east coast of Korea, later escorting the Mighty lvIo to Inchon and Wonsan Harbors. Wonsan vvas included among the bombardment assignments on -the second and third cruises conducted during the Korean conflict. Since the Korean War, the LGFBERG has served with the Seventh Fleet in Far Eastern vvaters on ten dif- ferent occasions. Her assignments included several patrols. Her assignments included several patrols of the Formosa straits, fast carrier operations and vvith the Pacific Fleet Hunter-Killer Group. The ship has been awarded the coveted for excellence in anti-submarine warfare for four consecutive years. After FRAM
