You can recoil how the rooting section went wild, cheering the team on to victory. Remember the spirit and en- thusiasm that set the stadium to echoing? Basketball games brought crowds to their feet at the final gun. Remember the spirit and en- couragement that seemed to edge the boll into the basket? Class plays and pageants gave the drama-minded students an outlet to display their talents. Remember the spirit and harmony with which they were presented? An invisible yet noticeable force was always present at these activities which achieved their ends so successfully. Spirit IS the needed breath that puts life into a smouldering idea and blows the embers into a flaming reolity. That unseen force is the Spirit of Lodi. Little thoughts and ideas resulted in the creation of Sol by Freddie Cooper in 1945. This quaint figure was originated to sym- bolize the Spirit of Lodi . After several years of oblivion we ore now reviving Sol to act as guide throughout this annual. Buddy Self has done the characterization on the following pages. TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration Faculty Classes at Work Seniors Activities Sports Snaps Superintendent and Board of Education Mr George Emde, Sr. Mr H T. Woodworth Mr Rueben Rott Mr Nelson Davis Mr. Neil Locke Superintendent ' s Message The otterrnath of two woria wars, the ten- sions of the present cold war, the struggle between capital and labor, the Invention and production of weapons designed to destroy civilization, the de- cline of religion, the high crime rate and the gi- gantic tax assessments are all being used by pessi- mists as arguments that civilization is ropidly destroying itself. One person said, All i can do is pity the poor seniors who are being thrown into such o chaotic world. The seniors do not need such pity. They are not afraid of chaos. They thrive on work and they do not expect to be pets of providence, nor do they pray for Ivory Towers where they may idly dream of unearned grandeur. They realize that what we have in America has been attained by thinking and working in a democratic society. They are also aware that what they will have tomorrow will be the result of their thinking and working. They will think and work to perpetuate democracy. Knowing that nothing social or industrial is ever finished, they will assume responsibility for making progress in these fields. The seniors ore learning the art of participa- tion. They are being trained to retain as much rugged individualism as possible but at the same time to cooperate for the good of society. They have khe mental and physical agility to meet the tasks ahead. The seniors will succeed. Board of Education At the end of each year it is evident how much the Board of Education does to maintain an effi- cient educational system. Each member gives much time and help voluntarily to see that our school keeps up its good standards of learning and pro- gress. We appreciate their interest in our welfare and hope we will measure up in the years to come to the faith they have in us. Principal and Deans Mr, Paul R. Bowers, Principal The Spirit of Lodi — what does it mean to you? May I tell you what you hove taught me, over these past four yeors, to believe it means? The Spirit of Lodi Means; That everything you do is worth doing right. Outstanding work in every deportment veri- fies this statement. - - ■ That you believe In good sportsmanship and fair ploy. The good will held by Lodi through- out this oreo speaks for itself. That you ore friendly and considerate toward faculty, fellow students, and the odult public. That you, individually, believed you had a task to do while at school. Remember, whotever you do, there is no substitute for adequate preparation. Thot you, and the students who hove gone before you, are extremely loyal to Lodi High. The fine school facilities, school interest, and school spirit, attest this fact. May I wish you success and happiness as you ossume vour responsibilities in society. Keep The Spirit of Lodi within your heart. It will help you achieve higher worthwhile goals. I will be watching your progress with interest and pride. Miss Ella Fedrau Dean of Girls We wish to express our gratitude to our dean of girls, Miss Fedrou, for the help and guidance she has given us this post year. She is always willing and reody to help any girl with her problems. She is admired by all of us for her cordial monner and for her efficient way of handling school problems. Mr. Robert Trumbly Dean of Boys Mr Trumbly, our dean of boys, has done a fine job this past year guiding and giving his good ad- vice and friendly greeting to all boys. Not only is he dean of boys, but he coaches A basketball and B football. The Sophomores surely found out when they began their yearly activities with o roller-skating party on January 9, 1950, at the new roller-skating rink on the 99 Highwoy. Bes-des the skating party the Sophomores had two other activit- ies the following months. One was a dance held at the Girls ' Gym wth a variety of dances ond refreshments. The other was a p en c at the Lcdi Lake and had students all in their piayclothcs swimmirg, playing baseball, eating, taking walks, rides, and dozing in the sun. Thcsa were also very successful. Around the beginning of the school year the class djes cards went on sale and turned out very successfully with the Sophomores exceeding their goal by S21 .80. The dues cards and the tickets for the activities were sold in the English Classes by the Class Repre- sentatives. The successful class candidates were— Gerald McGary, president; Colleen Gallagher, vice-president; Dena Nietschke, secretary; Mar- lene Hops, treasurer; Richard Vaccarezza, doss representative. One of the highlights of the year became a reality for the freshman class with the honor of assisting future students during Eighth Grade Day. Eighth graders of the surrounding school dis- tricts spent on enjoyable day getting acquainted with the different classes and activities at Lodi Union High School The members of the freshman class acted as guides. Ap- proximately 160 students were members. Despite the large number, all were kept busy planning rallies for basketball and football season. Another accomplishment of the Pepstirs this year was putting the White L in the grandstand. One hundred sixty students wore white and those surrounding them wore red. Years Ago was a delightful comedy of young Ruth Gordon who wanted to become an actress. With the help of an understanding mother. Ruth nolly overcame the objections of her father, a retired seo-captoin, who- finally gave his consent so she could fulfill her desire. The junior ploy was rated os on overwhelming success by all who attended. Heaven Can Wait Heaven Can Wait was the successful Senior Piay of 950. Two performances were given, Moy 4 and 5, by on oil-senior cost. Joe Pendleton, o boxer, is taken to the heavenly portals before his time, and upon his arrival he is refused ad- mittance. With the aid of Mr. Jordan, a heavenly being, Joe seorches for an earthly body that is in the pink . His adventures before he finds a suitable body ore uproarious.
