: 'w Education and Freedom In America we think thot democracy is synonomous with freed:m. We believe that democracy- depends upon education end that democracy and education are the chief stockholders in freedom Freedom, as known in America, is forcibly abolished today by detaters in many countries of the world. Dictators operating under totalitarian governments claim, falsely but loudly, that they are promoting de- mocracy These totalitarian governments, whether focist or communist, are riding high and constitute a world challenge to genuine democracy and freedom. Dictatorships thrive on ignorance and poverty. When dictators come in, free education, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of opportunity go out. Free people, highly educated and peace loving, possess many non-military qualities which can be very potent in maintaining peace, prosperity and freedom. It is our hope that in America educational insti- tutions pupils will develop sound and lasting habits of discriminative reading and straight thinking about con- temporary social, economic, political and scientific problems so that they will be prepared to perpetuate democratic freedom in the world by peaceful means. Dean of Boys Miss Signo Holm, t on Principal's Message Are there ony opportunities for the youth of todoy? John Keats lived just twenty-six years, yet his poetry will live forever. Franz Shuberf dcd at thirty-one. In those years he wrote mony musical compositions that will live forever. The high standard of living ond the rich heritage which we enjoy today is due in a great measure to o man named Thomas Edison, who was willing to work far into the nights perfecting his inventions to be used by monkind. The world today is waiting for men with vision ond industry, men who dare to think, men who dare to stood on their own feet. There are people who fail because they are afraid to moke a beginning; who go to bed tired because they spend the day looking for an easy job; who cannot tell what they think until thev read what the morning paper has said. Are you to be counted among this number? Opportunity is yours for the Joking if you really want it, if you ore willing to work for it, if you ore willing to discipline yourself and if you will not be discouraged The need of o good job for every man is no greater than the need of a good man for every job. PAUL R. BOWERS
