Published by the students of Lodi Union High School Ju l948 _OOA 'JN OMH G 00L : 'w Education and Freedom In America we think thot democracy is synonomous with freed:m. We believe that democracy- depends upon education end that democracy and education are the chief stockholders in freedom Freedom, as known in America, is forcibly abolished today by detaters in many countries of the world. Dictators operating under totalitarian governments claim, falsely but loudly, that they are promoting de- mocracy These totalitarian governments, whether focist or communist, are riding high and constitute a world challenge to genuine democracy and freedom. Dictatorships thrive on ignorance and poverty. When dictators come in, free education, freedom of speech, freedom of religion and freedom of opportunity go out. Free people, highly educated and peace loving, possess many non-military qualities which can be very potent in maintaining peace, prosperity and freedom. It is our hope that in America educational insti- tutions pupils will develop sound and lasting habits of discriminative reading and straight thinking about con- temporary social, economic, political and scientific problems so that they will be prepared to perpetuate democratic freedom in the world by peaceful means. Left ,0r •■Ruebenp.ft , Neil C. Lock e. Burton A. Tovvt President; Nelson N Dean of Boys Miss Signo Holm, t on Principal's Message Are there ony opportunities for the youth of todoy? John Keats lived just twenty-six years, yet his poetry will live forever. Franz Shuberf dcd at thirty-one. In those years he wrote mony musical compositions that will live forever. The high standard of living ond the rich heritage which we enjoy today is due in a great measure to o man named Thomas Edison, who was willing to work far into the nights perfecting his inventions to be used by monkind. The world today is waiting for men with vision ond industry, men who dare to think, men who dare to stood on their own feet. There are people who fail because they are afraid to moke a beginning; who go to bed tired because they spend the day looking for an easy job; who cannot tell what they think until thev read what the morning paper has said. Are you to be counted among this number? Opportunity is yours for the Joking if you really want it, if you ore willing to work for it, if you ore willing to discipline yourself and if you will not be discouraged The need of o good job for every man is no greater than the need of a good man for every job. As the school year of 1947-48 ends, many o senior will look bock upon some of the activities which were included in this year's pro- gram. The class election was held in early October, with the first class meeting being held in November. The colendar for class events wos drawn up at the meeting. Also, Betty Jeon Colvin was elected to attend the Stote Convention sponsored by the Legion Women's Auxiliary. This year's Senior Ploy was held in April and was pro- claimed a huge success by everyone attending. The traditional Junior- Senior Prom wos held in May with the Seniors being guests of the Junior Class. A large crowd attended, and it was one of the best Proms ever. Next came the Senior Banquet in May with all of the Seniors attending. Probably the outstanding event of each year is Ditch Day whereby the Seniors ore allowed to ditch legally. It was held in Sacramento with swimming, golf, and other games being tlie occasion. The Baccalaureate services were held in the High School Auditorium June 6. Then came the day every Senior looked forward .to for twelve long yeors. Graduation exercises were held in the Grope Bowl on June 10. This ended the year for all of the Seniors. Although we were all glad that high school was over for us, we also hod seme desire to do it all over ogam. We still think Lodi High is tops. RAYMOND MOSER m CoC . After months of working on this year's Tokay, during school and vocations olike, we hope that we hove completed an onnual which you. Students, will like. We have worked under improved conditions this year since the Flame room was enlarged to include on office for both the Flame editor ond the Tokov editor with ample desk and typewriter spoce for both staffs. Another thing which helped make this Tokay's completion eosier wos the foct that the staff wos very helpful ond cooperative, and that the deportment editors worked well in their fields We hope thot this Tokay will bring to you a complete occount of oil the school achievements ond activities from the '47-'48 school year for you to remember long after you leove Lodi High Dorothy Brommcr. Early m March the Junior class put on a three-act comedy titled Mistokes at the Blokes which received high praise from the copocity audience. The drama seoson closed with the annual senior play. This year the class of '48 presented a comedy by the name of Come Over to Our House The play kept the appreciative oudience in goles of laughter All plays were ably directed by Mr. Arthur Von Horn, who also had the extra responsibility of doing the' stage work Assisted by members of the stagecraft class, his work was outstanding. The red-men started cut the season with a three-gome winning streak only to lose a heart-breaker to Sacra- mento, their fourth opponent After ekemg cut a 7-6 win over the Grant Pacers, the Lodi team hit the skids, losing all the rest of their games except for a scoreless tie with Woodland. In the troditicnal Stockton-Lodi classic, the Tarzans evened up the series standing with 14 wins for Lodi and 14 for Stockton with a 15-0 victory over the Flames. Superior weight and speed ond outstanding team play were the mam reasons fer the Tarzans' victory. As usual the Flamelets, under Cooch Eddie Seiferling, had a successful season, olthough for the first time m several years they didn't annex the championship. After tying the Turlock light- weights for first place in the southern division, the Bees lost the resulting playoff to drop cut of the race. Basketball Although losing to Stockton in the Southern division championship playoffs, the Flame varsity and Bee bosketballers had highly successful seasons. Both coaches. Bob Trumbly and Bill Archer, deserve o word of credit for doing such a good job with their charges, who with a few breaks, might have been Soc Joaquin champions. CLIFF GOEHRING HARLAND BERNDT Both teams bowled over all league opposition except Stockton, losing a two-out-of- three series with the latter. In the third or rubber game between Flame and Tarzan varsities the score remained tied after two overtime periods, Stockton fin- ally winning in the third or sudden death period 56-54. The Flamclets went down less gloriously, losing 36-28 to the Tarzan Babes. Five out of the first six varsity players were seniors, leaving only Harland Berndt to return next year. Severol Bees will be moving up, however. Jerome Foszer, Luther Shimczaki, Benny Goehring, and Tony Haro, along with several obte J.V.'s, should moke up a strong varsity aggregation next season. Probably the most outstanding player on the varsity, if not in the whole league, was forward Johnny Mendez. Mendez led the conference in scoring and was the team sparkplug.
