PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Class of 1943, your situation is so different from that of all other classes which have preceded you for a decade, that it is impossible to write this message without refer- ing to that fact. You are entering a world engaged in a historic total war which means that for the first time in recent history, each person has a place where he is needed. It is a strange fact that during a peaceful era, when smiles and laughter should have abounded, many graduates looked out on a world which wants you and needs you. Even though the need is grim and terrible, it is a rich human experience to be wanted and to be needed. And if you arc smiling with the prospects before you, it is because you are deriving inner satisfaction from this fact. When the war is over and the transitional period is past, you will be young adults. My hope is that you will help in the development of a world which will provide for each individual the satisfying experience of being needed.
