Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1940 volume:

I The PUBLISHED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF LDDI UNION HIGH SCHOOL. LODI. CALIFORNIA FOREWORD r I 'HIS book is an honest attempt to portray Lodi Union High School as it is today. It is an earnest effort to record frankly, in word and in picture, the people, the life, and the activ- ities of this institution during the year 1940. IN MEMORIAM ‘Dark tree! still sad when other’s grief is fled. The only constant mourner of the dead!’’ ----------------BYRON, THE CYPRESS.” TASHIO KABA '34 MORRIS SMITH '37 GEORGE GURO '39 ROBERT KING ’42 BILL NAKAGAWA '44 Six BARNEY HAGEN DEDICATION TO a man whose keen interest in the building of men has led him to encourage the high- est standards in athletics; to a man whose con- sistent endeavor has been to develop in the students of Lodi High, sportsmanship, char- acter. and fair play; to 'Barney' Hagen, we. the Tokay Staff of 1940, wish to dedicate this book. Sei’tn PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE TREES” nPHROUGH all stages of man’s development trees have contributed much to his material, mental, and spiritual welfare. Hundreds of tree products, such as lumber, rubber and fruits have blessed man in material ways. No finer place than groves of stately trees has man found in which to gain mental poise. Friendly forest sanctuaries increase man’s respect for Nature and his faith in Deity. The security provided by these material blessings and the mental and spiritual strength gained in these tree sanctuaries inspire man to better living. MR. LEROY NICHOLS Superintendent of Schools Principal. Lodi Union High School To the Seniors: “Trees.” the theme of the 1940 Tokay, so adequately symbolizes “The Good Life.” that my best wish is that you will always be as sturdy as the oaks, as serene as ines, as sensitive as aspens, as beautiful as Jhpanese cherries in blossom, as fruitful as San ewquin Valley orchards, and as enduring as California redwoods. ---LEROY NICHOLS Eight MR. St. Mary’s 19 GRANT — LODI Lodi High’s fighting Flames opened their Sac-Joaquin Conference football season with a 10-6 win over Grant Union High. The undermanned Flame squad came back in the final periods after trailing 6-0 at the half. Sparked by Seiferling and Rouse, the Flames scored in the third period after a fifty-seven yard sustained drive. Warren kicked the extra point, and added a field goal late in the fourth quarter from a difficult angle on the twenty- three yard line. The game ended with Lodi staving off a last minute passing attack by the Hillmen. Lodi 10. Grant 6. TURLOCK — LODI Scoring early in the first quarter and then valiantly fighting off a favored Turlock eleven. Lodi High's un- derdog team singed the tail of the Bulldogs by admini- stering a seven to six defeat. Turlock drives were a consistent threat, and three times scores were averted when the Lodi line held within their own ten-yard stripe. The Flame score was on a Seiferling-to-Lieb pass, with Warren adding the deciding extra point. The remainder of the game was defensive ball with Turlock scoring only in the last few seconds of the third stanza. Lodi 7. Turlock 6. LODI — McCLATCH Y The first touchdown for McCIatchy, which proved to be the beginning of the end for the Lodi eleven, was made by Wristen on an eighty-five yard runback of an intercepted pass. It was Wristen again in the third quar- ter who was the spearhead of the attack which finally wound up in another tally for the McCIatchy Lions. Late in the first half, the Flames, led by Jack Seiferling. plunged and passed their way to the only Lodi score of the game. Rouse and Brusa shared the backficld honors for Lodi, while George Kishida stood out in the line. For McCIatchy. the whole story was Wristen. who ex- celled in every department of play. McCIatchy 12. Lodi 6. LODI — MODESTO The Lodi Flames held the Modesto Panthers to a scoreless, bitterly-fought first period, only to lose 18-0. The Flames came within striking distance of the Mo- desto goal only twice during the game, and both threats failed to materialize. Modesto scored as a result of a pass interception and two blocked kicks. The Panthers exhibited a powerful aggresive team which packed too much weight and speed for the Lodi team. Lodi 0, Modesto 18. SACRAMENTO — LODI Once again the light, fast Flame line proved its mettle by holding the favored Sacramento varsity to a mere six points. Fighting all the way. the Flames nearly scored when a forty-yard pass. Seiferling to Declusin. clicked after drawing off the Dragon defense by faking a kick. Sacramento scored on a fourteen-yard reverse. Even in losing, the Flames scored a terrific upset, for Sacramento’s veteran squad was favored to capture the league title. Lodi 0. Sacramento 6. STOCKTON — LODI The closing game of the 1939 season found the Flames smashing their big rivals, the Stockton Tarzans. 15-7. at Baxter Stadium. A Stockton fumble set up the first Lodi score and. after moving 34 yards, the Flames sent Scott over for the first touchdown. A few moments later Licb and Hunter broke through to block a Tarzan kick, but Minetto. Stockton quarter, recovered in the end zone for a safety. The alert Lodians scored again when Locke blocked another kick which bounced into the arms of Brum, who then raced forty yards for the final Lodi tally. Stockton scored only in the closing minutes of the game with a short pass. The game was characterized by the brilliant play of the entire Lodi line, with the backfield doing its share to bring home the victory. Lodi 15. Stockton 7. Scanty “B NON LEAGUE SCORES Lodi 7. LODI TURLOCK LODI — SACRAMENTO Setting an inspiring example for the Flames, the Lodi High classy B team trounced the Turlock Bullpups. 13-0. The Flamelet defense was exceptional with Turlock never advancing farther into Lodi territory than the 25-yard line. Both scores came in the first half. Melby shaking loose with a forty-yard scoring jaunt in the first quar- ter. to be followed five minutes later by John Thomas’ seventeen-yard drive over guard. This victory marked the opening of the Flamelet’s title-defending campaign in the Sac-Joaquin League. Lodi 13. Turlock 0. Don Bell’s underdog Lodi class B football team star- ted slowly—to pile up a mere 26-0 win over the Dragons. It all started when Melby broke away behind beautiful interference and raced 94 yards for the initial score. Then shortly before the half ended. Memory drove over from the ten. Throughout the game the Flames had the upper hand, and were never once in serious trouble. They seemed able to gain almost at will through the highly touted Sacramento line and Kagawa consistently completed his passes. The Flamelct's final tally came when Brown caught a pass in the end zone. Lodi 26. Sacramento 0. McCLATCHY — LODI Preventing a complete route at Sacramento J. C. Stad- ium, the Lodi B’s crashed through with a 25-0 upset win over the McClatchy Lion cubs. It seemed almost a score-when-you-please game with Melby. Thomas and Egbert crossing the goal line for the Lodi tallies. The Flamclcts looked exceptionally good against opposition that was figured to give them a beating. Lodi 25, McClatchy 0. LODI — MODESTO Once again the Lodi B team ran rampant, this time over the Modesto lightweights, to the tune of 27-0. Get- ting off to an early lead, the outcome of the contest was never in doubt. The Flamclets added two more touchdowns in the second stanza, and topped it off with another tally in the third period. Kagawa's long passes accounted for the bulk of Lodi's scoring going to Wilson and Melby. Defensively. Fukumoto and Wilson stood out with the entire Lodi line constantly outcharging the visitors. Lodi 27, Modesto 0. LODI — STOCKTON Climaxing the local Armistice Day celebration. Lodi’s B football team won what later turned out to be the Big Four and Sac-Joaquin Conference championship for the second year by a 14-13 score. Their goal line was crossed for the first time in league play. The Flamelets fought off an early Stockton lead to come back in the final period. Flashing a tricky attack, the Tarzans scored twice in the second and third periods. Then, in the second stanza, the Flamelets cut loose with a dazz- ling passing attack which caught the Stockton team napping. Twice Lodi completed long heaves, once Ka- gawa to Wilson for Lodi's first score, and then from Melby to Thomas on the nineteen. After a plunge by Egbert, Kagawa went over for the score and Egbert added the extra point. This marked the second time in two years that the Lodi B team has carried off the league title. Lodi 14. The class was divided into three groups: The first group was composed of girls learning to swim under the direction of Mrs. Stella Higgin- botham: the second squad played hockey under the instruction of Miss Anne Devine: and Miss Bess Matthew efficiently supervised the third group which was made up of tumblers. The regular program of sports, consisting of volleyball, baseball, and bas- ketball was effectively carried out during the remainder of the year. In basketball the seniors were victorious, while the juniors won the cham- pionship in hockey. A course in life-saving was also given by Mrs. Stella Higginbotham. The girls of Stockton High School were the hostesses at a volleyball play day on April b. to which the girls of Lodi Union High School were invited.
