smt FOREWORD HAT could be more natural than that the staff of this TOKAY should choose Agriculture as a theme? Lodi Union High School, situated in one of the foremost agricultural regions of the world, is a nucleus of agricultural students, many of whom have won honors in county, state, and national competitions. May this book be a field of memory where you can cultivate your reverie and reap many hours of pleasant school-day recollections. Angelo Fanos Verne Hoffman, Jr, Marlow Stark Carroll Do; OUR classmates, Carroll Dow, Marlow Stark, Angelo Fanos. and Verne Hoffman. Jr., this year won the National Stock Judging Championship in Kansas City. In so doing they brought distinction and honor to their fellow students and to their school. As a token of joy and appreciation in the achieve- ment and success of our friends, we dedicate to them this 1939 TOKAY. DEDICATION T NATIONAL HONORS LODI Future Farmers of America received national recog- nition last fall when they won the National Vocational Students’ Livestock Judging Contest at the American Royal Livestock Show in Kansas City. The livestock team was composed of Verne Hoffman, Jr.; Angelo Fanos; Carroll Dow; and Marlow Stark, alternate. Lodi won the State Championship at San Luis Obispo in May and represented California in the National Contest. Lodi won its honors competing with thirty-four other state champions, placing first as a team judging draft horses and sheep, and third in beef cattle. As individuals, Verne Hoffman. Jr., was second high man of the contest, high individual in sheep and third high in beef. Angelo Fanos was twelfth high man in the contest and sixth in draft horses. Verne Hoffman. Jr., also was signally honored by being the second Lodi Future Farmer to receive an American Future Farmer Degree. The team, accompanied by Verne Hoffman. Sr., went East as guests of the Santa Fe Railroad. This was the first trip East for most of the boys and was truly educational, for they obtained a fair cross-section impression of the Great Mid- west. The boys made stops at Manhattan, Kansas, visiting the great State University there and judging several rings of livestock. They stayed ten days at Kansas City, Missouri, competing in the contest, visiting the American Royal Livestock Show and attending the tenth annual National Convention of the Future Farmers of America. The Lodi Chamber of Com- merce and the Lodi Chapter F. F. A. furnished a bunch of Flame Tokays, labeled with a small tag telling about the Lodi District and Lodi crops, to every one of the twelve hundred guests at the annual Future Farmer Banquet held in the main hall of the Kansas City Municipal Auditorium. They visited Chicago. Terre Haute, New Orleans, and the Grand Canyon with overnight stops. At the last stop, the boys took a muleback ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. This, truly, was an experience never to be forgotten by these Lodi Future Farmers. Ole Mettler won this national honor in 1935. o on O C O oo A N N V E R S A THIS year we have taken these few pages to give recognition to every previous annual and to a few of those who made the annuals possible. The TOKAY can be seen in the picture in its infancy bound in paper. Its progress through the years can be noted until now. forty years later, it is published in book form. Here also are a few of the editors and business man- agers who through their ideal—“Each year a better TOKAY” —have achieved these improvements. So it is through their efforts that we have tried to make this, the fortieth edition of the TOKAY, the best yearbook possible for the students of Lodi Union High School. EARLE CRANDALL Vice Principal THERE is a reason why the Lodi District is the only place in the United States where the Flame Tokay grape flourishes to perfection. The reason is a combination of climate and soil, together with wise and skillful husbandry. There is a reason why the Lodi District is one of the most prosperous farm- ing communities in the world. The reason is a combination of successful diversified crop farming and livestock raising by intelligent, thrifty, indus- trious. and progressive farmers. There is a reason why the homes in the Lodi District are superior to most rural homes in the world. The reason is the pride taken in beautiful homes and gardens by Lodi District home owners. There is a reason why the boys and girls of the Lodi District are privileged to attend school in attractive and well equipped school buildings. The reason is that the residents of the district want good schools for their youth of whom they are very proud. There is a reason why the youth of the Lodi District should flourish. The reason: The citizens of the district, celebrated for their excellent public spirit, working harmoniously with Nature’s fine gifts, have made this district a veritable garden spot. Under Miss Martine Emert's care- ful cultivation, plays like the Juniors’ presentation of Spring Dance” and the Tokay’s Poor Millionaire” blossomed out into outstanding successes. Miss Emert along with Miss Rachel Weller and Mr. Sydney Halsey made the Christmas Pageant a creation of infinite beauty. The Flame’s musical revue, “Showboat.” and the Seniors’ “Little Women” completed the harvest of plays whose settings along with those of the other productions of the year were made by the stage craft classes under the direction of Mr. Ira M.
