Philip, G ialb f,r '4-0 A lUu i feeAAaCf '33 edicat ian Vkrnk W. Hoffman, Sn. This year Lodi like a victorious toreador has finally emerged triumphant from the arena of battle with the toros, Stockton and Auburn, to win the coveted basketball championship. Therefore to Seiior Hoffman and his team we dedicate this year’s Tokay. Buena fortuna, seriores, hoy y siempre. AtsietnLLj, fyltima ViAta 1 PtUncip ti JMeAAxXfe. Lkhoy Nichols VAMOS A SER BUENOS AMIGOS “Mexico” is the theme for the 1938 Tokay. The editorial staff in selecting this theme has made a splendid gesture of friendliness. “Amu a tu vecino y te amara' ”—LOVE THY NEIGHBOR AND HE WILL LOVE THEE—is a Spanish proverb, a great favorite in Mexico, where the people are noted for friendliness. The world is in need of friendly neighbors. Nations will he friend- ly when their citizens have friendly attitudes. To have a friend one must he a friend. The ability to make and keep friends is a mark of true greatness. My wish for the 1938 graduates is that your world will he full of friends. Your world will he a much brighter one if your next door neighbors, your schoolmates, and the students and citizens of other communities are truly your friends. Then you may contribute much toward world peace and happiness by developing a friendly attitude toward peoples of other lands. “Vamos a ser buenos amigos.” Lkt Us Be Friends. The hoys seemed to have things pretty much their own way, as Phil Dettmer was elected president; Jack Schwarze, vice-president; and Bill Beckman, secretary. Phil took charge immediately and appointed committees for Ditch Day, Senior Day, class announcements, and other functions. The committees for the class flower, class colors, and a class motto presented a variety of choices to the Seniors, who voted after a heated discussion. The results were as follows: Class flower: Gar- denia. Class colors: Blue and Silver. Class Motto: “It is not the gale, hut the set of the sail That determines the course we go.” The class of 1938 voted to put a plaque in front of the school and created a new tradition by handing a lamp of learning to the head of the Junior Class. Ditch Day was held at McKinley Park, in Sacramento, on Fri- day, May 13, 1938. There the Seniors played games, ate their lunch, and listened to the class prophecy. However, all was not play, for the Senior Class was very active in formation of policies of a new student participation in the gov- ernment that was started this year. Baccalaureate services were held in the auditorium June 5, with Reverend Verne Brown presiding. Father Hardeman read the Scripture, Reverend A. R. Boone gave the address, and Reverend Primus Bennett gave the benediction. The year’s activities closed on June 9 with the graduation of the Senior Class on the Flame Field. Dcttmcr, Ritchie MISS IDA RINN Director AUlietioi 1 fyooibcdl Lodi has had a very successful year in football. Although lacking in proper reserves nd weight, the fiery little Flame squad swept all opponents aside to become the inners of the Sac-Joaquin Conference C. I. F. Championship. The scores were as follows: Dale Sept. 17 Lodi— 6 Scores: Vallejo—0 Sept. 24 Lodi—19 St. Mary’s—7 Oct. 1 Lodi—13 Turlock—12 Oct. 8 Lodi— 7 Modesto—6 Oct. 15 Lodi— 7 Sacramento—7 Oct. 22 Lodi—19 Woodland—0 Oct. 30 Lodi—20 McClatchey—0 Nov. 5 Lodi—13 Fresno—34 Nov. 19 Lodi—14 Stockton—7 Nov. 26 Lodi—13 Woodland—12 When November 19 finally rolled around, the Flames, eager and determined, cu- red their annual fray with the Stockton Tarzans. Odds seemed in favor of Stockton, it before thousands of fans, the largest crowd ever to see these rivals play, Lodi dis- ayed a control of the game that was magnificent, outplaying the Tarzans every step the way. Outweighing the Flames by a slight margin, the Blue and White team it up a scrap unequaled in the many years the two schools have played. At the final m, Lodi carried the game by seven points, tired but triumphant. Not only had they enged the previous season’s defeat but they had just participated in one of the most cctacular games ever played by two high school teams. The only game remaining was the Sac-Joaquin Conference C. I. F. Championship ay-ofT with Woodland, to be played whenever the Flames decided. The Flames owed again their indomitable spirit by slating the Wolves for the following Friday ght. The Wolves, although already beaten by the Lodi team, were confident of :tory. It looked as if they were right in their prediction of the game when at the d of the first half, the Wolves led 6-0. Lodi became infuriated in the second half, irtinga rally that will be remembered for years to come. Battling every step of the ly, the Flames again and again showed the scrap and team work which was char- terislic of them. The score was still in favor of the Wolves up until the last minute d a half of play when the Flames drove over another touchdown to make it 13-12 favor of the Lodi Flames, the new Sac-Joaquin Conference C. Lodi won the Big Five League for the first time in twenty- one years, in a play-off game, defeating Stockton 32-28 in an overtime period. This game was played in the Stockton Civic Auditorium before a capacity crowd of 2,800 enthusi- astic students and fans. Lodi trailed for three quarters, tying Stockton three times in the last quarter, with Hoffman tying the score at 28-28 in the closing seconds of play. Lodi lost the first Stockton game 25-26 and then went ahead to win all the other league games in the circuit, defeating Stockton in the second game in an overtime stanza 40-37. Vic Hccr, Lodi’s sensational forward, went to town in the three minutes overtime to score 6 of the 7 points. After winning the Stockton series and the league, Lodi breezed through Bio Vista, champions of Solano League, and Oakdale semi-final champions of the Modesto and Westside Leagues. In the final game, at Auburn, Lodi trailed all the way, with a half time score of 6-13. In the second half, Lodi outplayed and outscored Placer Union’s Hillmen with Hoffman again tying the score at 18-18 in the final half minute of play. The Lodi iron-man team entered the overtime period knowing that victory would not he denied them, because they had already humbled Stockton in overtime play in their last two games. The success of the team was due to the unerring, deadly sharpshooting of Vic Heer and Verne Hoffman. Jr., the passing ability of Jack Corell, the superlative defensive work of Don Brown, Del Goodman, and Fred Clasen, and the co-operation of all the substitute players. Vic Hccr acted as the appointed captain in a large number of games, with Verne Hoffman, Jr., acting as captain in the last two, Stockton and the final game with Placer. Both were picked as All Section players last season and again this year by almost all the sports writers in this section. Don Brown was also named on the first team by some writers. The record made in basketball this year is the fulfillment of a prediction made by the “Tokay” six years ago when Coach Verne Hoffman took over the varsity coaching activities. Coach Robert Trumbly helped in innumerable ways in making the team a champion, and Elmer Paid performed efficient and faithful service as manager. The players, manager, and coach were given a banquet March 15, 1938, and were presented with gold basketballs by former Flame basketball players and business men. The Student Body also awarded sweaters and letters to the players and manager for winning the sectional championship. Hockey, tennis, basketball, volley ball, baseball, tumbling, archery, and swimming were the sports the girls chiefly participated in. Miss Matthew efficiently supervised a tumbling team of twenty who presented their clever stunts for Field Night while the other girls marched and danced. The year’s activities were climaxed by this exhibition given by the girls and boys on May 12, 1938. VaUeifJuzll Neuharlh. Kcttlcman, McLean, Marrs, Taylor, Troutman. Enzminger; Knoll, Oga. Doty.
