°j A , dM 'II '2 tUJU C t haj ZL huJ TO« OY vy S. 1 04 I ONION NI€N SCHOOt tO€l COilfOPOIN V y THE DRAMA OF SCHOOL LIFE In this Tokay the students can see the roles they have played in Lodi Union High School during 1937. We have chosen Drama for our theme because all activity is drama and our school is a stage for both great and small roles. The students have played parts in classes, organizations, music, school pro- ductions, and even the informal parts which are shown in the snaps. Miss Elizabeth McDole, who has played an important role at Lodi Union High School, is not only the head of the English Department, but also adviser for the 'Tokay ' For a number of years, she has whole- heartedly co-operated in producing a year book worthy of Lodi High School. Her pleasant personality and her great interest in this undertaking have won her deserved recognition. We dedicate this, the 1937 Tokay ' to '• one whose originality and energy have been consistent throughout the years. Miss Elizabeth McDole! r •V • .v IN MEMORIAM EDDIE SAKAI, '36 ANDREW NEPOTE, '39 LORENA WERNER, '40 Leroy Nichols All the world's a stage. And all the men and women merely players: They have their exits and their entrances. It is to be hoped that every student in Lodi Union High School will find in this Tokay an authentic and satisfying record of his exits, his entrances, and his acting. He who has played his part well, whether the part was great or small, has given invaluable cooperation towards the success of the school year. The stage hand behind the scenes, the costume maker and the fitter, and the attentive listener in the audience, have contributed just as much to this success as the most brilliant star in the cast. Even the star depends upon the alertness of the prompter, the correct cues from those who have minor parts, the skill and dexterity of the property man and the right attitude of the listener. May the 1937 Tokay be a reminder that All the world's a stage and that the life record of each one of us on this great stage of the future will be noble only if we choose good parts and then master the intricacies of acting on this stage either in front of the footlights or behind the scenes. This year, our leading lady in high school affairs was Bernice Tramontini, ad- judged California's outstanding high school girl in a citizenship contest sponsored by the California Daughters of the American Revolution. Bee was awarded a trip to Washington, D. C, to represent California at the national convention of the D. A. R. The spotlight shone upon her in our high school drama also, for, as student body president, she led extensive re- forms and inaugurated a new system of student government. Athletic, active, and delightfully gracious, Bee Tramon- tini will receive many encores for her splendid performances on the great stage of Life. Lodi Chapter No. 1, Future Farmers of America, has completed a very suc- cessful school year. One hundred twenty-one students enrolled in the Agricul- ture Department were members of the chapter. The officers were Cecil Mc- Kindley, president; Albert James, vice president; Fred Clasen, secretary; Verne Hoffman, Jr., treasurer; Vernon Mettler, and Oliver Baumbach, reporters. Lodi chapter members made creditable exhibits at both the County and State fairs, winning $750.00 in premiums. At the Interstate Livestock Show in South San Francisco, Lodi boys sold $2650.00 worth of ilvestock and won $200.00 in prizes. Frank Jacinto showed the F. F. A. champion pen of lambs. Lodi was also successful in her judging process, winning third place in Picnic Day sweepstakes, placing first in agronomy and entomology, second in trees and agricultural mechanics and third in weeds. Verne Hoffman, Jr., was high in agronomy and Chester Randolph in entomology. William Kiriu was second in agricultural mechanics. Three Lodi boys were also advanced to the degree of State Farmer, the highest award a boy can win in the state: Albert James, Verne Hoffman, Jr., and Ernest Gribaudo. The Lodi Chapter gave Future Farmer emblems as awards to its three out- standing students: Berne Hoffman, Jr., Albert James, and Fred Clasen at its annual Father and Son banquet. Outstanding programs of the year were the Father and Son banquet, the Valentine party, the barbeque, the Livestock Show, and an assembly for the Student Body. Altogether, the Agricultural Department had a very successful year. First clarinets: C. NEW ACTS IN 1937 TRAFFIC SQUAD Lauchland, Goodman, Newman, Solari, McKindley, Fox, Clasen, Purviance; Schwarze, Johnson, Correll, Donald, Wolf. This year, student government was created for Lodi Union High School by an election held April 23. In the future, the commissioner type of government, granting greater individual freedom and activity, will be employed. Along with Student government, the first Student dance, the Junior-Senior Prom, was held May 14. Because of the success of this dance, a future of frequent student dances is promised. Hand-in-hand with our dance and our new constitution, an efficient traffic system was started. A corps of Junior and Senior boys have acted as traffic officers during the latter part of our school year. eovs' smi Lodi's 1936-37 athletic year was featured by the most disastrous football season Lodi has ever encountered and by the revival of interest in basketball which, in recent years, has been overshadowed by football. Lodi's 1936 football varsity suffered eight defeats, two ties, and won none in its schedule of ten games. For this most disastrous season, no excuse can be offered. It is a mystery no one can explain, and must be accepted as an existing fact. The Junior varsity won two games and tied one. The highlight of their season was their decisive 21-7 win over Galt High, which had previously been an undefeated team. The B's, under the new coach, Don Bell, entered the newly formed B league and had a fairly successful season. The only bright spot on their record is their 6-6 tie with the Sacra- mento B's. The fact that will live longest in our memory of this season is the breaking of our tradition of never losing to Woodland and Turlock. These two teams played for the league title, Woodland over-powering Turlock for the champion- ship. Thus the trophy we have proudly held during 1936, symbolic of our football supremacy, has gone as have our traditions. Lodi has taken seven championships out of fifteen years of football includ- ing the years 1934-1935, which they took consecutively. Looking forward to the football season of 1937, let us consider the chances of Lodi's football team as being very promising because the experience which has been gained by those Sophomores and Juniors who played a great deal of the season will in all probability prove to be for the better interests of the 1937 grid season. Lodi High School's '37 basketball team enjoyed an exceptionally good sea- son. The team this season was composed mostly of Juniors who played both C and B in the two previous years. Their team work can be accounted for in the fact that they have played together for three years, the result being a smooth working aggregation. The favorite won without doubt. Stockton was unanimously the best team on the field. Lodi tried, but in vain— they were up against a team that was superior in every phase of football. The 27 points chalked up by Stockton had to be earned, however, and the game showed it was no walk-away for the Tarzans. Because Stockton did show their ability in winning, they rightfully deserve all credit for the victory they obtained. Kick Humphrey and Al Vossler were co-captains for the Flames. The regular program of sports, consisting of volleyball, hockey, tennis, baseball, basketball, swim- ming, tumbling, and arch- ery has been effectively carried out. In volley-ball and basketball, the Seniors were victorious, while the Sopho- mores won the championship in hockey. The Juniors surprised everyone by very easily attaining first place in baseball. A tumbling team, consisting only of Freshmen was organized this year under the supervision of Miss Bess Matthew, a newcomer to Lodi Union High School. Although the girls took an active interest in archery, tennis, and swimming, these sports remained more or less in the background. In addition to this regular program of sports, outstanding in the girls' minds, is the Penny Play Day, sponsored by the Girls' Association on April 1. Obstacle races, dashes, a three-legged race, relays, archery, and a baseball game afforded the onlookers much entertainment and excitement, and the partici- pants much pleasure and fun. The girls of Stockton High School were the hostesses at a play day on April 17, to which the girls of Lodi Union High School were invited. Tracy, Manteca, Linden, and Ripon were also guests, and all of the girls participated in various games merely for recreation and not for competition, making it purely a day for play. Elsie Stotz, a girl who is well known not only for her good all around athletic ability, but also for her championship ability in racing, has been training under Coach Don Bell. All in all, the girls out for sports and the Athletic Department have had a year of which they may be proud.
