It contains many pictures which will bring to mind old faces and friends, and will present a resume of the year’s activities. Most important, of course, is the fact that it will aid in forming a closer bond between the stu- dent and his Alma Mater. Thus, we submit the 1936 Tokay, which is symbolic of Lodi Union High School and its activities, and hope it will be a source of memories for many years. Lodi Union High School Lodi, California In Memoriam Arnold larkiunt, ’J4 Harold Augusta, ’JB Emma (ftorliring, ’j B Four Blessed are these departed who have found their lives anew.” O ONE who always has the interest of the students in mind, to one who is genial, to one who is ever ready and willing to give advice, to the Vice Principal of Lodi Union High School, Mr. Amos P. Reese, we dedicate this 1936 TOKAY. Five LEROY NICHOLS Principal's Message SCHOOL LIFE f r HERE is no more interesting or important period in the life of an individual than the time spent in school. The year book is a graphic reminder of school days. May the 1936 , Tokay bring to each member of the class of 1936 many memories of a profitable and pleasant high school career. Four years spent in high school have made great changes in each graduate. These changes, good or bad. are largely the results of the contributions i lade by the student himself and they are extremely significant because they will influence life in the future. Good teachers and excellent school equipment greatly facilitate pupil growth only when the pupil gives cooperation and active participation in the school program. Each graduate has made his own record. Contrary to a common statement he is not leaving his record behind. He is very definitely taking it with him. It is written in personality, in character, in reputation and in the minds and hearts of companions and citizens of the community. It is my hope that each record will be very commendable and a very fine future asset. Six — Leroy Nichols School Board Fa culty gen. M.iglund. Reese. Osterli. Winsor. Zumwalt. Crose. Crandall. Hearn. Eight Senior History HE SENIORS of the Class of Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-six entered Lodi Hi as an ordinary horde of freshmen. A few were terribly frightened (these later became members of the Scholar- ship Society); others were self-confi- dent and a trifle boisterous (they were the football players, officers, and yell leaders of the next four years); the rest just meandered in and became the backbone of the school. Being perfectly normal, they remained inactive for two years, and then, like the ground hog. came out of hibernation. After bringing out the best of its talent in the homely play. The Late Christopher Bean,” the Class gave the Seniors a banquet and amateur hour. Now has come the time for the Class of '36 to have its fling before it joins those who have already had theirs. StarL. ATHLETICS i ATHLETICS N JANUARY 13. 1936. Lodi was host to a meeting of coaches and principals from over seventy Central Cali- fornia high schools. At this conference schedules for track, swimming, tennis, and football were drafted. It was also decided t have the annual Lodi-Stockton football game held at Baxter S ..dium for the next four years. Jim Conklin was elected president of the conference and Barney Hagen was named secretary. These men succeeded H. B. Lenz and Fred Solomon of Stockton. The Student Body of Lodi Union High School was host to these men at a luncheon at Hotel Lodi. JIM CONKLIN Lodi opened its football season with one of the smallest squads in Flame history facing one of the toughest schedules in years. As the season progressed there were many disappointments. Members of the squad dropped out. and as a whole things looked gloomy. After losing the first two games, however, the team began to round into shape, and as a whole really went to work. They went through the rest of the season unbeaten except for one game, the Fresno game. Incidentally, this game with Fresno was the first time a Lodi football team has ever played in the rain on the Flame Field. The season went on and then come the big game with Stockton. Lodi was the underdog, but the team Barney Hagen had out on the field that night was truly another bunch of Fighting Flames. The line played about half the game in the Stockton backfield. The Stockton attack was completely bottled up. while Lodi opened with a surprise attack. After winning their big game. Lodi’s way to a championship in the newly formed Sac-Joaquin League was blocked by only one game, the game with Woodland. It. nevertheless, took Wood- land into camp by a score of 26 to 7. In fourteen years of football. Lodi has won seven championships. Bill Thomas was named the outstanding player and A1 Vossler won the punting trophy. Sweaters were awarded to the following boys: Fifty-five BARNEY HAGEN LODI HIGH COMPLETES . Lodi. 7 — Vallejo. 12 September 20. 1935 A fourth-quarter rally of Vallejo paved the way for a 12 to 7 win over the Lodi Flames in their first contest of the season. This was Vallejo’s third game. Lodi threatened several times, although severe penalties, due to a lack of practice and over- eagerness. prevented Lodi from scoring. Earl Welsh captained the Flames. Lodi. 6 — St Mary’s. 12 September 27. 1935 The Fighting Flames lost their second game of the season to St. Mary’s High School of Berkeley. Although Lodi staged a brilliant second-quarter drive led by Glenn Happe. the game ended with the ball on St. Mary’s 2-yard line. Lodi showed much improvement. Woodrow Uttke acted as captain. Lodi. 13 — Turlock, 6 October 4. 1935 Showing a great deal of improvement, the Lodi Flames de- feated the Turlock Bulldogs in a second-half rally. Turlock scored in the opening minutes of the game. After the half the Flames went to work. After quick stabs at the line and an occa- sional pass. Thomas made the touchdown standing up. A few minutes later Lodi scored again. The Flames were led by Lou Yank at center. Modesto. 0 — Lodi. 19 October 11. 1935 Lodi’s Fighting Flames completely overwhelmed the Modesto Panthers to win their second game in the newly formed Sac- Joaquin League. A wet field prevented the Flames from scoring higher. Bill Thomas acted as captain. Varsity Patrick. D. Handel. Jacobsen. Bauer. Humphrey. Canepa: Pclliprini. S. Handel. Happe. Thomas; Lind. Uttke. Junior Varsity Lodi. 0 — Sacramento. 0 October 18. 1935 Sacramento unleashed unexpected line power and punting ability and held Lodi to a scoreless tie. Sacramento outweighed the Flames 15 pounds per man. The Flames were captained by Lester Lind. Lodi. 19 — Woodland. 7 October 25. 1935 A Lodi football team has never been defeated by Woodland. This record was kept intact as the Flames downed Woodland in an exciting game. Lodi. 0 — Fresno. 6 November 1. 1935 A fighting Fresno team and a change of wind in the form of a cold sweeping gale brought defeat to the Lodi Flames. This, incidentally, was the first time in Flame history that a Lodi team has played in the rain at Lodi. Lodi. 45 — San Mateo. 12 November 11. 1935 The Lodi Flames overwhelmed the San Mateo Bearcats in a game packed with many thrills and long runs. A1 Pelligrini ran 96 yards to a touchdown in the second period. This was one of the highest scores ever run up by a Lodi team. Stockton. 7 — Lodi. 21 November 22. 1935 Twenty-one to seven — that was the pleasing score that Lodi’s Fighting Team realized when the game ended. Every man on the team knew he had a job to do—that was to beat Stockton. They beat one of the greatest football teams Stockton ever had. Thomas acted as captain. Lodi. 26 — Woodland. 7 December 7. 1935 Lodi won the Sacramento - San Joaquin League title by de- feating Woodland for the second time during the season.
