OF the two hundred and ninety-eight Freshmen who boarded the “S. S. Lodi High” in 1931, one hundred and seventy completed their four years’ cruise and walked down the gangplank, June 13, .1935. Outstanding memories of the entire voyage centered in the last three weeks on board May twenty-ninth stood out as the date of the Junior-Senio banquct. June first was Class Night, the occasion of the Senior Play, “Three-Cornered Moon,” presented by members of the Senior Class for their classmates, relatives, and close friends. On June ninth, Bac- calaureate services were held in the Auditorium. Reverend Primus Bennett, at the invitation of the class, delivered the Baccalaureate sermon, and the Girls’ Chorus offered sacred music. Then on June thirteenth came the memorable night of Commencement. The open deck was transformed into an amphitheater for this last night on board. Growing trees against a sunset sky were the setting, and the High School band, in full uniform, was seated in concert formation in front of it. As the band played the first soft strains of music, one hundred and seventy Seniors made their entrance in single file, alternating a girl in white sport dress and a boy in a dark suit. They were seated in a large double semi-circle. Delwyn Mintun, Senior Class president, gave the address of welcome. Mr. T. W. Mac Quarrie, president of San Jose State Teachers’ College, was the speaker for the Commence- ment exercises. Mr. Amos P. Reese presented the diplomas. Girls in long flowing, pastel dresses with their arms heavily laden with flowers entered, singing the Flower Song, with the Seniors’ response following. And so ended for these shipmates the pleasant voyage on the high seas of Secondary Education.
