Text from Pages 1 - 110 of the 1952 volume:

Dedication Standing on the threshold of a new phase of life, our high school days behind us, we, the class of 1952, pause to remember our schoolmates and teachers, who have left us to enter the service of our country. To them, and particularly to our former coach, Zane McCoy, who contributed much to our high school life, we affectionately dedicate this edition of Hilltop Echoes. Class History On a cheerful day in September of 1940, twenty-nine eager and talkative students climbed up the hill to Lodi High School to their first days in the halls of learning. Although there were twenty-nine of us, only nine of us are left: Dora Zimmerman, Donna McGar- vey, Bill Gossard, Hattie Klinect, Jim Yoxtheimer, Jr. Warner, Bob Under- wood, Sally Blackburn, and George Zimmerman. Miss DeLong was our teacher. As we flew into the second grade we took Miss DeLong with us. This year we were joined by Ear! Ivie. Mrs. Whitney greeted us in the third grade and Don Sterzer joined us. It seems as though Mrs. Whitney had an atfectionate class. One boy took a girl in the cloakroom and kissed her. What about that, Bill Gossard? Janice Ripley arrived from Chatham in the fourth grade to cause Mrs. Fuller trouble by sitting on top of the desks. Also Jim Yost and Gaylord Pickering joined our ranks. At last— we were in the fifth and were upstairs. This year it took two teachers to put us through. They were Mrs. Delcamp and Mrs. Seal (Mrs. Grimm). To help make matters worse Stanley Debro arrived to join our hap- py crowd. Our sixth year was a big one as we were preparing to enter high school. The thought of changing classes rather frightened us but to soothe us we had Miss Baker (Mrs. Merle Seal). This year Barbara Packard's smiling face was observed. Our first day in the seventh grade Mr. Sam Mosher met us at the door to usher us through many detention halls and trips to the office. New faces de- tected in the class were those of Jack Humphrey, Millard Sharp, and Mary Chapman. Mrs. Schafer guarded us every inch with her ruler. Finally we made the Freshman homeroom. This year Lafayette was saddened by the loss of four students to Lodi. They were Jeanette White, Don Sanford, Irene Farnsworth, and Joan Kindig. Mr. Quayle led us to victory in the float contest. Steadily we climbed and steadily our class increased. To help us along this year Ruth Mooney and John Schall joined us. Mr. Wegratf got us through this, our Sophomore year. It seems Mr. Wegraff liked our class or maybe he was the only one who could tame us down, anyway he went right along with us to help us through a big and memorable Junior year. He also guided us to the first prize in the float contest. The theme of our float was Indians —I guess that is what he thought we were. Maynard Sowers joined us to help sell refreshments at football and basketball games, pencils with football and basketball schedules on them and sell sweat shirts with a Lodi emblem on them. All this plus the proceeds from our class play, M_lliss, directed by Mrs. Eastman, went for the big affair of the year, our Junior and Senior Banquet held at Mazena’‘s on May 09. SENIORS! The big year at last! To add to the fun and excitement nine new members were added. They are Bob Arters, Eleanor Jorgensen, Bill Wesolek, and Don Hall from Chatham: Patty Jellison, Jim Locke and Jeanne McBride from West Salem; and Flossie Thompson from Grove City. It sure has been fun having you with us even though it has been for such a short time. We presented our Senior Class Play, “Don't Blame Me,” under the di- rection of Miss Sechrist, our class ad- visor. To make money for our Senior Compliments of PECK’S STUDIO For the Finest in Photography Akron, Ohio trip to be taken in May, we sold vanilla and had a bake sale. We have had a wonderful time this year and I guess we all rather hate to leave dear old L.H.S. But some day we all hope to see each other again and talk over old times and all our fun in high school. The last echo of the Class of ‘52 to be heard in the halls of L.H.S. was May 29, 1952, at the Commencement exer- cises; however, this is not the last to be heard of them in the world. May 3051962 Leroy, Ohio Dear Joan, I thought that while my two boys were asleep I'd write and tell you all about the big reunion the Class of ‘52 had. We were all very sorry that you could not be with us as you were in Washington in a very important conference with the President. Bob Arters was one of the first to arrive. He tells me that he is now playing professional football with the Cleveland Browns. Next to arrive was Mary Chapman Schar. Mary is now one of the most. prominent businesswomen in the city of Lodi. She is manager of Motor Cardo: On the outskirts of Lodi I saw several large signs pointing the way to Stanley Debro's large group of farms. As I arrived at the Community Park I saw a tamiliar looking group of faces. As I went closer I discovered the faces belonged to Irene Farnsworth, Bill Gossard, Chub Hall, and Eleanor Jorgensen. Irene is now Secretary to the owner of the Cleveland Browns. Wonder why?!? Bill Gossard has made so much money flying Jet Planes that he can afford to take several trips a year to the Hawaiian Islands. Wonder what he has discovered down there? Chub really picked a rough vocation. He is now a professional wrestler. Eleanor is working in the Cadillac plant. Guess what kind of a car she is driving. (A brand new ‘62 Chevy.) As I was talking to Eleanor, Jack Humphrey joined us. He now owns the Westfield Inn at Leroy. As we were talking about Jack’s Inn I noticed a particularly handsome Navy Officer coming across the park toward us. As he came closer we saw that it was Chick Ivie. He is making a career of the Navy and is doing very well. He is now an Admiral. I was surprised to see Jim Locke there as he is now owner and manager of “Poppa Jim’s Flop House and Hamburger Joint’’ and is very busy. As I was chatting with Jim I looked up and thru a shower of stones and a cloud of dust I saw Hattie Klinect arrive. Hattie is now racing Stock Cars at the Barberton Speedway and is known throughout the country as “Hot Rod Hattie.” Jeanne McBride Shaw was there. She is now giving piano lessons be- tween caring for her three children. Jeanne and I walked over to another small group of people. We found in this group Donna McGarvey, Ruth Mooney, Millard Sharp, and Maynard Sowers. Donna and Ruthie are now running the most exclusive Dude Ranch in the wide open spaces of Texas. As Millard is now Senator of Ohio you have probably run into him many times in Washington. Maynard is now playing professional basketball. As we were all talking over old times Mr. and Mrs. John Schall (Barbara Packard) arrived. They run a Garage and Lunch Room. John fixes the cars and Barb cooks the food. Gaylord Pickering and Jim Yoxthiemer arrived together. They are part- ners in “The Mottie Fixit Shop.” They always were interested in motorcycles. Be sure to see Walt Disney's latest picture, The Three Little Pigs.’’ The scenic backgrounds were drawn by our former classmate, Don Sanford. As I was talking with some of the girls I noticed a bright red convertible drive in, it was Flossie Thompson. She now owns her own Beauty Shop. We noticed that her car had the new crush-proof fenders on it. As you know those fenders were invented by Don Sterzer. Right behind Flossie was Bob Underwood. Bob now owns the big Sohio station on the corner of Bank and Elyria Streets. He delights in giving the orders now instead of receiving them. Next to arrive was Bill Wesolek. Bill is now a teacher. Back in school he always did know more than the teachers, so he said. Jim Yost was there. He is now Editor of the Akron Beacon Journal. I guess his paper route finally paid off. Dodie and George Zimmerman stuck together. They are now famous dan- cers. | hear they took the place of Fred Astaire and his sister. I was talking to Janice Ripley and sne tells me that she is now running a Tourist Home. Now she is getting paid for having a houseful of people instead of just a headache. Jr. Warner sat right across the table from us. He now owns the best Dry Cleaning Plant in Lodi. Remember when Jr. used to take off last period everyday to go load his truck and just barely make it back in time to check out? The last to arrive (as usual) was Jeanette White and Sally Blackburn Weit- zel. Sal and Net now own the Exclusive Sweater Shoppe.” It is located on Fifth Ave. in New York City. Haven't things changed? It seems like only yesterday that we were in school. The memories of those days will be with me always. What fun we used to have, and what uproars we caused! The Class of ‘52 has quieted down a good bit. Could it be caused by the passing of time? It was too bad you could not have been there for we all had a wondertul day together and hated to leave and go back to our various walks of life, for who knows when we shall all be together again. Well, Joan, Dick just came home and the boys are awake so I must close and start dinner. I'll be seeing you.
