Little did we think in September 1931, that May 1943 would arrive so quickly, but now that the long looked-for day has come we hesitate—do we want to leave? For twelve long years we have endeavored to obtain the know- ledge and skills which will be the basis of our life in years to comes As graduation approaches, we wonder what the years ahead of us have in store. Perhaps it is a good thing that we cannot foretell and foresee the future events. Regardless of what tomorrow has for us, the friendships, and the school act-= ivities, and the-experiences in meeting problems and solving them throughout these years should be a very dofinite asset in meeting situations whieh will arise in later life. As we look on the world today and see the problems which we will bescalled upon to solve in this world so disorganized and upset by war, we can sco placcs where we might havc done better. However, these facts romain unchanged by wishful thinking. Therefore, in the future, wo must rosolve to put our best into whatever wo are doing. It is for these reasons that we have taken, and aro now completing, this twelvee-ycar course in school. I hopo evory Sonior has succoeded in taking somothing from this training that will help him in this troubled and trying world. So in closing, I would like to say to the Seniors: Should school acquaintance be forgot And nevor brought to mind? Should school acquaintanco be forgot And days of Auld Lang Syne? For teachers, classmates, schoolmatos all A tonder thought we bring; Our loving tribute as to-night Our parting song we sing. And hero's a hand my friond of ycars, Give us a hand of thine; And pledge a lasting loyalty For days of Auld Lang Syne. wel) Sve SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY by Doris Sommer After school one athe I was helping the town in its clean-up week campaign, I decided that the attic of our house was a good place to begin. Up into the eaves of the house I went in search of trash. What I ddscovered was not a little trash but literally a goldemine of it. The first thing that caught my attention was a box of books. Looking through these for an hour or so, I soon came to the conclu= sion that they might as well be thrown out, for no one reads those old-time books any more. Next a box full of everything imaginable came to my attention. In this I found an old- fashioned bussle, an Owege board, a worn-sout wig, and clear in the bottom was a crystal ball and a book on fortune telle ing. I lifted the crystal ball from its box and put it on. the floor and started looking through another box, when suddenly I noticed that the crystal ball was beginning to glow from within with a queer light, The light grew brighter and brighter and finally lit up the whole attic, Inside the ball a little figure suddenly appeared and starticd me out of my wits when it spoke to me. Yes, oh Master, what is it you wish? the little figure asked in’a squeaky voice. When I regained my tongue, I replied, Who are you, and why do you call me your Master? I have never seen you before in my life I I call you Master because it is written that the first person to take this crystal ball from its hiding place shall have any wish fulfilled that he desires. What is your wish, oh Master? 3 You mean to tell me that I may have any wish fulfilled? I asked in astonishmens. Yes, that is right. You may have anything you wish ex- cept one thing, and that is the wish to be rich. I can fule- fill only good wishes, and the wish to be rich is an evil one, explained the midget figure. Well, let's see. What shall I wish for? I asked, partly to the figure and partly to myself, 'Most people wish to look into the future, the inhabi- tant of the ball said hoping to help me, Alright, I said, I should like to look into the future lives of my classmates at school and see how they will fare in the struggle of life, but, of course, I suppose that Is asking too much of such a little figure. as yourself? Not at all, answered my little friend, for the super= natural ones, nothing is too much. I'll believe it when you prove it to me, I told him scoffingly. Ten gaze into the crystal ball and the life of your classmates will unfold before you, my little friend replied. Here is what I saw=-the remarks in parenthesis are the thoughts that ran through my mind at the time. The scene that greeted my eye when I gazed into the cry- stal ball was the interior of one of the largest banks in New York City--The Anderson Trust Company--and yes, there sat Edgar Anderson, the President of the Bank (his interests must have changed from girls to money). _ sh doesn't she?) Who's that asking for a Traveler's Check for Eleanor? Why, it's Marilyn Barnhart, Secretary to F. D. Roosevelt. (she used to be a good Republican, too.) There's Janet Bartholomai--she's an Opera Star now (look what her practice did for her!) Who's that cashing a check? It's Gene Bowman, Seems he's an Expert on Affairs of the Heart and Home” (maybe that was what his nickname Booty was for!) Here come two girls arm in arm. We recognize Mary Bow- man and Marilyn Bradeng Mary is a HateCheck Girl and Marilyn the Cigarette Girl at Ciro's (tch, tch, girls--didn't your Mamats done tol!’ you?) Oh, yes, I forgot! Andy Caesar came in with Marilyn Barnhart--he's Pocyauers to F. D. Roosevelt (he and Marilyn must be doing nicely: Here come two more girls--one is Manaser of'a Beauty Salon, Alice Cook and the other is Bubble Dancer, Vivienne Crosby ! Who's that looking at the ceiling? Why, it's Alethia Davis. She's an Astrologer now. (my, my, what her night life did for her a There's someone over there Shadow-boxing =-it must be Prize Fighter, Bob DeVoe (Bantam weight, of course). The little figure then said, We're leaving the Bank now, the next scenes will show your classmates at their work. The crystal ball was flooded with dazzling light and suddenly I saw, with a bit of veiling in his hand, Hat and Dress Designer, Ralph Farner (he never told me!) The little figure said, Zip, and Star of Superman Movies, Duane Garberich appeared (he must control the wires !) Zap,” said my little friend and there sat Bill Gordon in Solitary Confinement at Alcatraz (he used to be so quiet $) ip there was Lillian Gorey, the wife of a riveter at Lockheed (her defense job must have beon a means to an end.) t? Zap, brought Novelist and Poet, Rod Grimm into view {his appreciation for English ce certainly “must have grown py leaps and bounds $) Zip,’ and All-Star Brooklyn Dodger pitcher, Ernie Gyure hurled a nice fast “STRIKE” (he ree was good!) Zap, and Governor of Ohio, Ralph Hickling, flashed across the erystal balle Zip, and there stood Hair Dresser, Walter Krantz (he always was so talkativo.) : Zap, and Race Horse Jockey, Ellet Mann whizzed by on Seabiscuit (he's so small, you know. Zip, and Dick March the Head of an Insane ages um, ran sc reaming across the crystal ball (he 3 must be able to play his music’ there.) Zap, brought Winfred McVicker, a Window Washer on Terminal Tower, into focus (he always was up-in-the-air, ) Zip, brought Army Lieutenant, Kenneth Newcomor to a smart salute (ho must have switched branches of tho service }) Zap, and Prize Fight Referee, Robert Norton stood counting ten over a vory limp body (he always was so forward !) Zip, and there was Gerald Patterson who is now an : Assistant to Petty (look where his artistic ability took hin =-oh boy!) _ Zap, and there was Marjorie Piatt, a Famous Monsen Jungle Explorer racing across the crystal ball (she aluays did bring: wom back alive!) Zip, and there was Jim Ro running a popcorn 3tand in Cleveland (Hoge's popcorn, no oubt 1) Fi a Zap, brought Ambassador to Britain, Bob Rogers (he used to sit in front of Margaret--that's how w it all happened }) Zip, and Western Union Telegraph Bob Shaw whizzed by on his tricycle (wonder where Helen 1Eey ig Zap, brought Superintendent of New York Public Schools, John Snoli into focus or 1 see what his indu strious study did f6n him!) Zip, and there sat Old-Maid Schoolteacher, Doris Sommon (whateshason't she caught oné yot f) Zap, and Doris Szikula, a Model for Hattie Carnegie, sauntered by (wonder what diet she used?) Zip, and Famous News Commentator, Dale Whitacre, came on the Air (look what Government class did for hint) Zap, and there was Scrubwoman, Barbara Whitrignt, on her knoes (Howard must be going to night school | Well, said I, I. guess that's all. my eee auch u Yes, said tho little figure, that's all and besides I've got to leavee-ethe light is zoing out in tho crystal ball and that means it's my bedtime for even spirits have to rest. Good=night !9 Class History by Marjorie Piatt On a bright September day in 1931, we, a group of shy frightened children, climbed the hill to school for the first time. We were met at the door of the First.Grade room by Miss O'Hara who welcomed us and soon made us feel at ease, In our group was Marilyn Barnhart, Janet Bartholomai, Mary Bowman, Alice Cook, Vivienne Crosby, Robert DeVoe, Ralph Farner, Duane Garberich, Lillian Gorey, Gerald Patterson, James Repp, John Snell, Dale Whitacre, and Barbara Whitright. As one critic said it reaches into the past of America and evokes moving by a way of life that is lost in our present turmoil. Generations of plain, self-respecting people had lived in this old New England. They were the ancestors of the characters in the play and gave them their social and religious background. They werc the prototypes of the people found in any community and who are the backbone of America. There are the women in the homes who cook three meals a day and do the inn- umeral tasks which raising a family necessitate. There are the men who daily go to the office or the store or the job that these little homes may be maintained. The children growing up, going to school and marrying are now, as then, the hope and future of Our Town, Finally, one by one they are all gathered togcther in the cemetery on the hill-the old, the young, the rood, the bad, those who made the most of life and those who wasted it. As stage manager, Gerald Patterson save to his narration of the lives of the people just the risht touch of humor, pathos and understandine to mare the audience see them as he saw them. John Snell, Barbara Whitright, Ldgar Snell and Betty Fetzer as Dr. and Mrs. Gibbs and Editor and Mrs. Webb and Janet Bartholomai and Donald Hope as Emily Webb and Georre Gibbs played their parts with humor and conviction as did all the ather members of the cast. Our Town is the simple, humorous and touchinr story of any community and of the people who call it home. ‘This play will be remembered for its simplicity, clarity, and power. It was directed by Miss Mowrey. 4Q- JUNIOR CLASS PLAY - IT'S PAPA WHO PAYS After being compelled to eat biscuits and cere:l for an endless number of meals because Babs (Elizabeth Slater), his daughter, and Dick (Donald Hoge), his son, have bought quant- ities of them so they can use the covers to enter contests, Mr, Denny (Gale Williamson) tells the two that he forbids them to enter any more contests. Then, much to his surprise, Mr. Denny himself wins the prize, a car, in a contest which he had forgotten he had enter-— ed. Complications arise. Another contestant, Mr. Magoon (David Rice), is tied with Mr. Denny for first place. Miss Atwood (Norma Tawse), a publicity woman suggests drawing lots for the first and second prizes----the car and a dog. Mean- while, Mr. Denny has led his family to belicve that he was buying a car. Explaining why it doesn't arrive and the appear- ance of a huge Russian wolfhound puts Mr. Denny on the spot. The end of the play finds Mr. Denny working on a contest and Babs and Dick happy because they can continue entering them too. Other characters were: Nancy Worden, Burton Bowman, Mary Musser, Jack clegler, Martha Rice, and Thomas Whitricht. Miss Clift directed the play. at ee 8% 3h ac cay as ae av ¢ JR.-SR,. BANQUET The Jr.-Sr. banquet was held in the school gym May 1, at 7 o'clock. Students, upon entering the gym, found it.turned into a fairvland of ivied walls, white picket fence, trellises, pond, rustic benches and soft lirhts. The tables were bright with bowls of gay flowers, blue and yellow candles and umbrella place cards, The theme of the banoguet was Spring . Group singing led by Gale Williamson preceded the meal, Then dinner, consisting of everything from fried chicken to ice cream, was served by members of the Sorhomore “lass. The meal was interr- upted several times by late comers piving varied excuses. One was that a car broke down, The after-dinner program was very interesting and one that will long be remembered by everyone. Several members of the faculty, and many students took part in it. Music was furnish- ed by the sextet, octet, and quartet. After the program, many students had their pictures taken by Joo Rice. lveryone stayed for the dancing. You should have seen them cutting the rug. From reliable sources it was heard that the orchestra was super and that every one had a good time. 4]- BASKETBALL The Varsity Basketball team with Ernie Gyure as Captain and Mr. Caton as Coach enjoyed a very successful season-- winning 11 games and losing 7.
