HENRY V. MATTHEWS fy W Supervising Principal 74 Manga Za like Semafn AMERlCA'S young people are not just dreaming of a better world tomorrow. They are equipping them- selves for it. They are reading, studying, listening-absorbing facts and gathering knowledge from every source, to prepare themselves for intelligent participation in the just and peaceful world community which must be built out of the chaos of the war-scarred present. Young America must engage in a momentous task-qualify, not only for strengthening and advanc- ing the democratic pattern of our own way of life, but also to function constructively in their country's new role of leadership in the post war world. You are today where your thoughts have brought you, you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you. You cannot escape the result of your thoughts, but you can endure and learn, can accept and be glad. You will realize the vision lnot the idle wishl of your heart, be it base or beautiful, or a mixture of both, for you will always gravitate towards that which you, secretly, most love. lnto your hands will be placed the exact result of your thoughts, you will receive that which you earn, no more, no less. What- ever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain or rise with your thoughts, your vision, your ideal. You will become as small as your controlling desire, as great as your dominant aspiration. To you, Lodi High School's Young America, may I offer the following, in the words of Robert Louis Stevenson's prayer: The day returns and brings us the petty round of irritating concerns and duties. Help us to play the man. Help us to perform them with laughter and kind faces. Let cheerfulness abound with industry. Give us to go blithely on our business all this day, bring us to our resting beds, weary, content and un- dishonored, and grant us in the end, the gift of sleep. I3
