We, the class of l945, go forth to meet a troubled world. A bleak horizon lies ahead, but we are firm and confident in the conviction of our strength. We must keep the faith with those who have left, and we cannot fail, for our destiny is the destiny of America. From scarlet fields and revaged wastes, from bitterness and deepest sor- row we must rise to proclaim and revere peace. We have seen the flaming fingers of greed and hate clutching voraciously at precious liberty. We have felt the dearest loss, and we must fulfill the highest duty, ours is the task to build a better world. ln leaving we have compiled this book of memories, between. its pages are crammed the pleasures of our youth. The joys and thrills whose memory shall forever remain clear and bright, Yes, there is so much we leave behind but the love, the courage, and the intangible spirit of Lodi we carry still in our hearts. The greatness of our alma mater shall blaze bright always and serve as an inexhaustable source of strength. In the spirit of gratitude and farewell we humbly offer this, our yearbook, which we have tried to make not only a memento of our years, but a tribute to what our alma mater stands for in our heart. 5 fm Wemmmm FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT 01!z4, aww? mba! hm JM Zafe fze Wag! Am, C 1 y of New York's Pic Tribute to Greatness The morning fog covered Our town like a blanket of gloom. Our hearts were heavy Our tongues were silent Our eyes were full. Our President had begun His last long journey- Never again to penetrate The soul of Man with eloquence and prophecy. A farmer plowed his land And looked down unto The rich, fertile soil he loved: His face was drawn His thoughts were elsewhere He was not thinking of his crops: A man he admired, A farmer too, had left. His President had gone to Become a part of the very earth In which we sow the seeds Of life itself. Two small children, books in hand, Romped on their way to school- Little knowing what sad fate Had befallen our nation. There is no school today, I said, Our President is dead. Go Home. The schools are closed. But the children did not know, They continued, staring oddly At the world. Somehow I think those children felt Deep within their innocent hearts The tragedy of the quiet streets- The tragedy of nothingness. An old negro woman Stood in a subway train, Trying to knit with trembling hands A bit of thread: The blank expression in her eyes Told a worthwhile story, She had lost a friend, A man of tolerance and goodness, A man who looked on her dark skin As equal to his own. Next to her was an army private, Reading the morning paper With bewilderment and regret. The eloquence of silence reigned As heavy hearts were still. Wearily I climbed the subway stairs, And as I reached the top, The sun was breaking through The death-like fog, The dark and mist were gone The world was waking up again- I smiled. The spirit and faith and courage Of Franklin Roosevelt were everywhere ln the birds and trees and' grass About the Square In the sun and sky-everywhere. We must go on, I thought And let Freedom, Faith, and Fraternity Guide us in the Peace he loved- Ihrough all Eternity. of '44 fqgawicaihepddll DED! MARINUS C. GALANT! They have furnished the incen- tive to work diligently by establishing a pleasant atmosphere. We appreciate the ever-increasing advantages you have offered us and are indebted to you for your kind interests in our welfare. l2 HENRY V. MATTHEWS fy W Supervising Principal 74 Manga Za like Semafn AMERlCA'S young people are not just dreaming of a better world tomorrow. They are equipping them- selves for it. They are reading, studying, listening-absorbing facts and gathering knowledge from every source, to prepare themselves for intelligent participation in the just and peaceful world community which must be built out of the chaos of the war-scarred present. Young America must engage in a momentous task-qualify, not only for strengthening and advanc- ing the democratic pattern of our own way of life, but also to function constructively in their country's new role of leadership in the post war world. You are today where your thoughts have brought you, you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you. You cannot escape the result of your thoughts, but you can endure and learn, can accept and be glad. You will realize the vision lnot the idle wishl of your heart, be it base or beautiful, or a mixture of both, for you will always gravitate towards that which you, secretly, most love. lnto your hands will be placed the exact result of your thoughts, you will receive that which you earn, no more, no less. What- ever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain or rise with your thoughts, your vision, your ideal. You will become as small as your controlling desire, as great as your dominant aspiration. To you, Lodi High School's Young America, may I offer the following, in the words of Robert Louis Stevenson's prayer: The day returns and brings us the petty round of irritating concerns and duties. Help us to play the man. Help us to perform them with laughter and kind faces. Let cheerfulness abound with industry. Give us to go blithely on our business all this day, bring us to our resting beds, weary, content and un- dishonored, and grant us in the end, the gift of sleep. I3 4-7 ZZ Principal PRlNClPAL'S MESSAGE I TAKE this opportunity to express my sincere reluctance for leaving the Lodi High School on February l, l945. lt is not because I am leaving against my will. The decision which I have made is entirely mine. However, it is very difficult indeed to leave a profession with which I have been associated for the past eighteen years, especially when it has been so kind to me. to me. Among the factors wh.ch draw men and women into the teaching profession is the asso- ciation with the many boys and girls who make up the life stream of our educational institu- tions. The warmth, the loyalty, and the earnest respect which these young people give their teachers is the one great compensation for all their efforts. There are many things I can say to you in my farewell message. I can re-count many incidents, some containing a great deal of pathos, others wholesomely amusing. I can tell of the many friendships I have made among students in school and afterwards when they took their places in the outside world. But all this would only make my task of leaving you more difficult than it is now, and I assure you that a man's courage or his determination can be taxed only so far and then it will snap. Let it suffice to say that I shall never forget you and that you will always be in my heart as living symbols of. my rich and wholesome experience. I know my successor, whoever he may be, will have your faith, loyalty, and respect. These are an inherent part of your character. My heart is filled with gratitude for the respect and spirit you and all those who have gone before you have given me. God bless you all. I shall never forget you. I4 MARINUS C. Here not long ago the -teachers, pictured on this page, taught, reasoned and argued with boys and girls-under the lights of free edu- cation in a peaceful land. As they taught and practiced democracy in their classrooms, a war more horrible than any former war enveloped the earth threaten- ing to destroy the very principles these men had taught. ' Now these teachers and many like them are fighting to protect the country we all love. They are fighting to save our freedoms of speech, thoughts and expressions. They are fighting that they may re-turn to the schools of America and once again teach freely and without fear the students of tomorrow's world. Teachers of Lodi High Schoolfserving in the armed forces-we salute youl May a victo- rious end to this war bring you back to our classrooms where you may enlighten the minds of our younger brothers and sisters and fill their brimming cups with the universal knowl- edge, which will be so necessary, if this world is to live in sunshine and peace for all eternity. It seems that only yesterday that a bunch of scrawny kids entered, for the first time, the impressive halls of our Alma Mater. Yes, I mean the Class of I9-46. Three years have since gone by and now we, full fledged Juniors, are just one step away from being Seniors. Looking into the future, we find that only one more year remains in which to make new friends, continue studies and be a part of Lodi High School. It is hard to look back at all the happy occasions we have had and all the lost time that we cannot recapture. Espe- cially will we remember the Junior Social and Junior Prom, which were the high- lights of our Junior Year. Silhouetted against a lesser back- ground is the fact that these three years have made a change. You probably sense it in our older and more serene manner, but we, experienced by our thus far good- ly taste of high school, begin to feel a new growth of assurance. So it is that we feel quite capable of assuming the responsibility that will be enthroned in our future title of Senior. The Class of I946 looks to he future! f , . . Perhaps we would like to be even more like the Juniors and Seniors but in time we will certainly outdo ,these other classes that have passed before us. What sheer joy the Sophomore Hop proved to be. Perhaps in a few years it will be only a delightful memory, con- fused in a maze ot other impressive events. Yet will our whole Sophomore year be merely a smudge on the page of time? That seems difficult to believe, especially when this year has awakened so many stirring interests and activities for us. lt can never die! ln fact the Class not I947 will always be able to look back vividly and clearly at its Sophomore Year as an impressive one indeed. The enormity of such a venture was bewildering. The size of the stu- dent body, the building-everything was strange and novel. But all complex systems have their way of smoothing to simple routine, like turbulent waters finding their way to calm flowing streams. Given a chance, in the form of the Freshman Social, we overcame shyness and actually danced. Oh happy day! Sane Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And never brought to mind?,' Of what value is the meaning of these words, if we do not keep up our acquaintance with each other? It is the purpose of the Class of '45 Reunion Committee to plan the reunion activities of the Class of '45 after it has left Lodi High School. In future years it will be good for us to relax for an evening, and reminisce about the days gone by when we were in our carefree teens. Perhaps at that time we will be weighed down with matters of great importance and if many years have passed, there may be a silver thread among the dark tresses on many a head, eyes may have lost their sparkle, steps may be lagging, but hearts will be young and gay again when we talk of the happy days we spent at Lodi High, The Class of '45 Reunion Committee has set down plans for our first reunion which will probably be held in the spring of '46, This, we hope, will be the first of many successful reunions of the Class of '45. All members will be informed by mail as to the date and other particulars concerning the reunion. Every member of the class is requested to inform one of his town representatives of any change of address for it is the aim of the committee to keep in contact with all members and to get their opinions or suggestions of any activities which could be participated in. The committee can also act as an address bureau. Here's looking toward the success of our reunion plannings. OFFICERS ELEANORE LIPINSKY ..... . . President GLORIA PERSAK . . .
