MARINUS C. GALANTI HE CLASS of l943 graduates at a time when the challenge of world conflict is flung di- rectly across its path. l do not recall any group of boys and girls graduated from high school in the last quarter of a century who have had to face a condition similar to the one which exists now. The boys in the class will soon be in some branch of military service. The girls in the class will soon be in some work which directly or indirectly contributes to our total war effort. Everything you do will be directed toward the successful conclusion of this horrible nightmare. The members of the staff, during the course of your four years in school, have dug deeply into their knowledge and experience in order to prepare you better for this struggle. They attempted to train you physically and mentally for the task which is before you. This, however, is not sufficient. Vital to your very existence is your realization and understanding of two fundamental concepts, first, that you gear yourselves to the war ef- fort. Discard your thinking of last year and think in terms of l943. ln this world of rapid changes, one day, one month, or one year can easily out-mode the best strategy and the best planning. Keep yourself properly tuned to these rapid and necessary changes. Sec- ondly, understand clearly that you are fighting to preserve everything that is fine and de- sirable in our great democracy. Understand the implications of the 'four freedoms, free- dom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear. The first two are cultural, the latter environmental. If you will understand these two concepts and train your energies toward their acceptance, then you will make a splendid contribution to our total war effort. I close your formal high school education with fear and trepidation in my heart for you Decause of the turbulency of the times, and yet, I have an unshakeable faith and confi- dence in your ability to cope successfully with all the problems which lie before you.
