You have studied for the past four years under the supervision of the members of the staff of the Lodi High School. To my mind you have attained an education which should place you on the ladder leading to a great objective-an educated person. ln this message let me give you my concept of such a person with the hope that you will use it as a guide for future progress. To be an educated person you must know more than merely how to do something, whether it is giving a lecture, trying a lawsuit, or repair plumbing, you should know the significance of what you are doing, You should have a set of values-a yes and a no that are your own. You must learn to prefer for you have lived in the presence of things that are preferable. l do not mean that you should train yourself merely in conven- tions of polite society or conformities of crowd morality. Depart from both in many things. Learn about human life on this planet to see be- havior in the light of a body of experience and relation of your actions to situations as a whole. When you do this you will have acquired a liberal education, and it makes little difference whether or not you have been trained in philosophy or mechanics.
