CLASS PROPHECY I know it’s the custom for a class prophecy to look ahead, to the far, far future with hopeful eyes and crossed fingers, but since we are forging out with a type of pioneer spirit, I thought it would be fun to imagine that this class were graduating in the days of the wild and wooly west, in the land of the pioneer. As we enter the little town of Dead Dog, Montana, we see few people, as the day is hot, and the horses at the hitch-rail are switching flies with their abundant tails. From the door of “The Golden Parrot,” (a local, uh....soda parlor) we hear a girl singing mournfully the old favorite ( 1 on the hit parade) “Clementine.” Lest we forget, let us go closer and cast an eye on this damsel with the heavenly voice. Great guns! It’s “Canary Annie Pease,” one of the Senior class ’49ers! I always knew she’d make the top! Ah, here comes another gorgeous lassie, down the old board-walk. Why, it’s ‘‘Lucky Lucy Nichols” fighting girl editor of the “Dead Dog Gazette.” I’d have stopped her, but she seems in a hurry. I guess most editors have to be. Here comes a rider down the street now! Thunderation! It’s Two-gun Ginny Rasmussen! Dive for cover! Well, she’s gone now, but she certainly shot up the town. There's one pore feller now, layin’ in the street. Get a Doctor! Ah, here comes Doc Holley, sawbones of Dead Dog. He’s examining the patient now. Hm... he says, “Have ta dig the bullet out.” He just produced a bottle of Old Over Hang from his coat pocket, gave the patient half of it as a pain killer, and drank the rest “for his nerves.” Hm... the doctor is putting his saws, chisels, screwdrivers, and other medical tools back in his little black bag. “Was the operation a success, doctor?” “Yes,” says he, but the feller died.” Oh, well, “Slick” Gross, the undertaker, has to live too. Sometimes I think he and the doctor work together. Well.. There goes Sheriff Dan Felde on his horse “Runaway.” I’ll bet he’ll capture Two-gun Ginny! She’s a menace to law-abiding citizens. And there, asleep in the shade of that water barrel is “Huntin’ Harry Williams,” the prospector. Seems he just had a narrow squeak in the mountains on his last trip. Ataloa, Chief of the fiercest, bravest, wildest band of Indians in the West, almost caught ’em. Well, it must have been very thirsty and tiring, because he’s certainly resting now. Well, that pretty well covers our Seniors, in the days of the Frontier. Who am I, you ask? Well, I just sit here all day, drawing pictures and keep saying, “I wanna be a cartoonist.” 14 ----Standford Lynde
