FOREWORD This is your book — the 1944 Golden Eagle. The aim in compiling it has been neither to create a literary masterpiece nor to get out a prize winning volume. Rather we have tried to present to the student body an interesting memory book of the school year. If, in later years, as you turn these pages you are carried back in dreams to old Lodge Grass High, and the happy days spent there, the 1944 Golden Eagle will be a success. Secretary-Treasurer CLASS HISTORY In September of the year 1940-41, forty-eight bewildered and meek freshman entered Into this worthy structure to seek suitable matrimonial subjects with Miss Jean Jordan officiating. Ed Weigand was cited as groom with John Morgan as best man. Florence Swearingen was elected flower-girl. Also in this year we were subjected to rash treatment at the hands of the sophomores. We took solemn oaths to do our best and to obey our respected superiors. Thus we concluded our first unsuccesful attempt at matrimony, but were prepared for better years to come. As we returned in our sophomore year, Ed Weigand was again chosen as groom, Bette Bzoski as maid of honor and Florence Swearingen as flower-girl. Miss Jean Jordan led us in our attempts. IXiring this year the freshman were subjected to us and experienced our harsh but witty treatment. Our class was reduced seriously by various threshold mishaps. Several members were included in the freshman-sophomore play, Don’t Take My Penny . It was during this year that we were brought into the war, and we experienced the dreadful discipline of Saturday school to cope with the serious labor shortage by which we were confronted. We returned once more in our junior year, a much wiser and more experienced group. We selected Miss Harriet Mecklenburg as chief officiator to guide us in the many important events of the year. Bette Bzoski was chosen as bride with Ed Weigand as best man and Harold Hager as ring-bearer. The main event of this year was the pairing of couples for the annual Junior-Senior Prom. Almost all of the members engaged in the double-ring ceremony. Our entire class presented the clever play, It Happened in Hollywood . The fourth and last year culminated our matrimonial efforts of former years by the marriage of Miss Senior Class to Mr. Life of Service. They were joined by a aouble-ring ceremony with Mrs. Stevenson officiating. Ed Weigand was groom, Billy Zimmerman, the bride and Hazel Knight, the maid of honor. The smart senior play, Ask Me Another , with all seniors engaged was well attended. On May sixteenth marriage certificates were presented to the class by Mr. R. J. Brown. So now we are engaged in the problems of a matrimonial world. 14411 Class Flower—American Beauty Rose Class Color—Rose and Silver Class Motto---A quitter never wins and a winner never quits.
