The F orty- iners' ,fourne Vile, the class of nineteen hundred. and forty-nine, began making history the day we entered the doors of Lockwood High School. On that day we started ottt on the long jour- ney that would take us through six wonderful years of high school life. The first part of our journey, which we covered as seventh graders, was rather strange and bewildering. There was so much to do and so much more to learn! X'Ve looked at the sophisticated seniors with starry eyes and longed for the day when we would no longer be lowly seventh graders. As eighth graders we became seasoned trav- elers. l'Ve felt quite superior to the class of nineteen fifty, who were being initiated to the wonders of a high school. Various mem- bers of our up and coming class joined the band, the orchestra, and the 4-H Club. Our representatives to Student Council began to ,voice their opinions in conhdent tones. XVC belonged to Lockwood. The next was our freshman year. At last we were members of the senior high school. A few of our fellow travelers were lost on the way, but those with determination and will power made this year well worth remembering. For the lirst time we really became prominent in school activities, and the Varsity Revue and Gym Exhibition were participated in by some of the talented forty- niners. The crowning event, however, was our pla5', His First Shave. which won the Ir. High Competition Plays. During our sophomore year, with john Bristol as president, we traveled quite a few miles toward our destination. Our names appeared on the Warzuizslriie Stalfg we starred in school shows: and several of our boys be- came members of the lirst. string on the var- sity basketball team. It was impossible not to notice us. X'Ve forty-niners were every- where. Make way for the juniors! Yes, we had covered live-sixths of the distance. Next to the seniors we were the most important people around. Many of us went to the music festi- val at Hampton Beach, while others were fortunate to go to South Portland, Maine. Under the capable leadership ol' james Ab- berton, our president, we worked and played as the Year flew by. One occasion we shall never forget was the Junior-Senior Ball. YVe danced away the night in sheer enjoyment. Then came the time when the class of forty- eight moved out and we moved into Study Hall. It was with a thrill of happiness and anticipation that we looked forward to the next fall when we would be seniors. The last lap of the journey was our senior year. President Victor Dilfranco and a very energetic executive committee cooperated to make this year a successful one. Studies, ath- letics, the Christmas Hop, the Senior Play, the prom, and the banquet-they were all part of that short wonderful time that will live forever in our memories. Then to the solemn notes of the graduation march we, the class of nineteen hundredhand forty-nine, ended our journey. liVe are through with those travels, but they were only one phase of our lives. Now we are starting on another adventure, the journey into the future. For some it will hold happiness and success, for others, hardships and failure. l'Vith this in mind it is our ear- nest desire that with the knowledge and wis- dom acquired at Lockwood, we may face what is before us prepared and unafraid.
