Award I'Vin1mr S The F orty- iners' ,fourne Vile, the class of nineteen hundred. and forty-nine, began making history the day we entered the doors of Lockwood High School. On that day we started ottt on the long jour- ney that would take us through six wonderful years of high school life. The first part of our journey, which we covered as seventh graders, was rather strange and bewildering. There was so much to do and so much more to learn! X'Ve looked at the sophisticated seniors with starry eyes and longed for the day when we would no longer be lowly seventh graders. As eighth graders we became seasoned trav- elers. l'Ve felt quite superior to the class of nineteen fifty, who were being initiated to the wonders of a high school. Various mem- bers of our up and coming class joined the band, the orchestra, and the 4-H Club. Our representatives to Student Council began to ,voice their opinions in conhdent tones. XVC belonged to Lockwood. The next was our freshman year. At last we were members of the senior high school. A few of our fellow travelers were lost on the way, but those with determination and will power made this year well worth remembering. For the lirst time we really became prominent in school activities, and the Varsity Revue and Gym Exhibition were participated in by some of the talented forty- niners. The crowning event, however, was our pla5', His First Shave. which won the Ir. High Competition Plays. During our sophomore year, with john Bristol as president, we traveled quite a few miles toward our destination. Our names appeared on the Warzuizslriie Stalfg we starred in school shows: and several of our boys be- came members of the lirst. string on the var- sity basketball team. It was impossible not to notice us. X'Ve forty-niners were every- where. Make way for the juniors! Yes, we had covered live-sixths of the distance. Next to the seniors we were the most important people around. Many of us went to the music festi- val at Hampton Beach, while others were fortunate to go to South Portland, Maine. Under the capable leadership ol' james Ab- berton, our president, we worked and played as the Year flew by. One occasion we shall never forget was the Junior-Senior Ball. YVe danced away the night in sheer enjoyment. Then came the time when the class of forty- eight moved out and we moved into Study Hall. It was with a thrill of happiness and anticipation that we looked forward to the next fall when we would be seniors. The last lap of the journey was our senior year. President Victor Dilfranco and a very energetic executive committee cooperated to make this year a successful one. Studies, ath- letics, the Christmas Hop, the Senior Play, the prom, and the banquet-they were all part of that short wonderful time that will live forever in our memories. Then to the solemn notes of the graduation march we, the class of nineteen hundredhand forty-nine, ended our journey. liVe are through with those travels, but they were only one phase of our lives. Now we are starting on another adventure, the journey into the future. For some it will hold happiness and success, for others, hardships and failure. l'Vith this in mind it is our ear- nest desire that with the knowledge and wis- dom acquired at Lockwood, we may face what is before us prepared and unafraid. One morning, as was his custom, XfVoodley was reading aloud a choice article on Forty-nine VVays to Prepare Cucum- bers. Immediately it brought back memories of another famous forty-nine. I decided that it was time to go back to Lockwood for a visit. Having left VVo0dley with his cucumbers and the children safely away at school, I hopped into my helicopter and took off for the great metropolis of Apponaug. In my ex- citement I failed to notice that I was exceed- ing the speed limit. Suddenly an air cop ap- peared from behind a cloud and told me to pull over, Have a ticket to Judge Robert Downs' court, he said. It was none other than John O'Leary. I said goodbye as hastily as possible, while making a mental note to see attorney Vincent Rosati. Soon the familiar terrain of Apponaug and Vic DiFranco's airport came into sight. I raclioed the control tower for permission to land. Control operator, Bill Ionata, cleared the runways. Someone must have told him about my driving because as I got out of my 'copter, Nurse Barbara VVhitford was on hand with a crash crew led by Dana Ingalls. Dana told me that Stanley Essex and John Stoppard were commercial pilots flying between Appo- naug and Los Angeles and that Shirley Ran- dall and Barbara Burke were stewardesscs on the same line. I called one of Cook's cabs to take me from the airport. I liked their motto, 'fCook's cabs are never late fnot later than 1917, that isj. Bob Wyliiie, the driver, informed me that Bob Richmond was a stone cutter and Betty Caldwell, Ruth Moreau, Victoria Villa, and jean Spencer were operating beauty salons. As we passed the X'Varwick Theater, I noticed that the play was Dear Rose, written by john Bristol and starring Pat Colwell and Art I-Iannafin. Lynn Jacques was the featured dancer. .-Ks we were riding down Main St., I saw Tau nty-four Iimmy Bailey and Al Birch. Believe it or not, they were reporters for the journal. From them I found out that Rosser Donley was sports editor for the same paperg Frannie Waterhouse was a social workerg Betty Isaacs was coach of a professional girls' baseball team, and Kay Golanski was a famous play director. Because time was getting short. I hurriedly crossed the street to Bob XfVhite's drugstore, where I bought a newspaper. The headlines told of Jim Kennedy's successful campaign for mayor. Beverly IVat.son was his secretary, and Jeanne Civito and Anna Ciafrei were on the city council. A resounding slap on the hack and a hearty voice sa3'ing, How about joining me for lunch? caused me to turn around. There was Bob Gregory. president of the Lonely Heart's Club. I gulped my assent, and we went to Murphy's Garden Restaurant. The sweet music of Cairo's orchestra greeted us. just as we were being seated, a roll by the drummer, Marilyn Schmeider, called every- one's attention to the celebrated vocalist, Priscilla Smith. At the end of her number there was a great commotion at the door, and in walked Nellie' Petrarca, Mary Card, Irene Sanocki, Jane Swanson, Natalie Norden, Shir- ley Colvin, Shirley' Fisette, Anna Padula, and Leah Card. I'Vhat is this, Bob, a Lockwood reunion? I asked. He assured me that it was merely the regular meeting of the X'Var- wick Secretaries' League. Dinner over, we drove to Lockwood. The dear old building had not changed a bit ex- cept perhaps there was more ivy on the walls. Much to my surprise I found some of my own classmates on the faculty. Julia Rogers and Carl Schafer were teaching mathematicsg Beverly Veatch, Frances Powers, and Barbara Matteson were English teachersg and Marion Rouse was an instructor of languages. I asked them if they could give me any infor- mation about other members of the class. They told me that Jan Lawson, with the aid of Admiral X'Vyman, was going to take over the United States Navy . After I had recovered lil'OlIl this startling revelation, they inlortned 111e that Joe Lemieux was coach olf tl1e Steam Rollers. a11d that jake Ahberton was his Stal' player.
