THE LUCK 1957 Published by the Student Body of Lockport Township High School Lockport, illinois Thirty-five Years of Service WILLIAM H. STERLING 'lime has given to Mr. YYilliam Sterling the gift of wisdom. I'Ie has guided eight freshman homerooms through four years at L.T.H.S.. and he will begin work with his ninth in the fall of 1957. He has left his imprint upon the minds of thousands of students who can he glad that Mr. Sterling likes kids He has found that any teaching joh would get stale if it were not for the fact that kids are all different, alive. and vital. Mr. Sterling snapped in the mechanical drawing room during one of the moments which have made up thirty-five years of service. Mr. Sterling was born in the southern portion of the state in Pinkneyville, Illinois. Receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree from Illinois State Normal University, he continued his edu- cation at Iowa State where he obtained his Master of Science degree. Mr. Sterling has taught for a total of thirty-six years. I'l.is lirst year in the teaching profession was spent in Villa Grove, Illinois. He came here from there and has lived in Lockport ever since. After teaching woodworking for twenty-eight years, he felt that it would he enjoyable to in- struct another course. When the opportunity presented itself, he switched to full-time instruc- tion in mechanical drawing. Here we find Mr. Sterling, faking a few moments respite from work on his beau tiful mosiac pieces which he does in wood. Mr. Sterling has enjoyed golfing, hunting. and lishing especially when he was able to join his son. Dean. in these activities. He is the father of two children, a daughter. Joanne, and ' his son, Dean, both of whom are married and have made him a grandfather four times over. i l Mr. Sterling has found that time waits for no one. It is just passing through. The hours passing through his life have been used to build the lives of students. thirty-five years of service. 3 Lock Staffs EDITORIAL STAFF Editor-in-Chief .......... What happened meanwhile is what presented the problem. This problem became even more zteute :is for the first time L.T.H.S went on an hour system when each day consisted of only six periods. It was then that time came into its own: study hulls virtually disappeared lll'0II1 the schedules of IIIOSI of the students. This meant that homework, outside projects. :ill extra-curriculzir activity. and outside jobs had to be aecomplislied in the ull-too-short time after 3:05. Yes, unquestionably, time played a most im- portant role in the lives of ull L.'I'.II,S. stu- dents. In fact, time hl'CliIIlt' so vnluzilmle to most that it became necessary to ration it. Buist Walker President Richard Adamson Vice-President John Ferguson Treasurer Time to Part We the class of 1937, have worked and played together four years. and now the time lias come to part. W'ith our Senior year came dignity with which we led our classmates and schoolmates during this past year. YVith this dignity came pride in our school. activities. organizations, teams. administration and per- sonnel. We also can certainly be proud of the wonderful education which we received at Lockport Township High School. YVe elected four fine, young men to lead the aetivities of our class during its last year. YVe placed the responsibility of president upon the shoulders of Buist Wlalker. Richard Adamson. a former president. was vice-president. Capably serving as secretary was John Anderson, and our efficient money-handler was John Ferguson. Our first big undertaking was sponsoring Homecoming. VVe can honestly say that it was the best Homecoming ever. The seniors re- peated an honor which they had attained as juniors by winning the fioat contest. This year a group of senior homerooms got together and fashioned A lNhale of a Victory. Choosing our graduation invitations was fun, but we knew that our time to part was coming closer. We found that the hard work of some of our classmates seholastically did not go un- rewarded. Many were awarded scholarships. and twenty received membership in the l0'2 Club. The valedictorian of our class was Beverly Rider, while Wlilliam Kapella was salutatorian. While the juniors were working feverishly on the 1957 Prom, we looked baek and remembered the time when we had worked so hard to pre- sent. Dru-amer's Holidayf' As we heard the strains of Pomp and Cir- cumstancen we realized that the time to part had come-our Senior year had come to a close. During the first semester, the chorus was divided into two periods with the frosh-soph having the first period. mainly for work in the basic fundamentals of music, and the junior-senior group having the second period for advanced work on different selec- tions. ln preparation for the annual spring concert on March 17, the two choruses were combined. Because hand students were not able to be- long to the chorus this year, a sixth period group was o-rganized. Members of the band and members of the regular choir who had sixth period free on Tuesdays and Fridays comprised this group. It was found that this group could accomplish a great deal in only two days as they were all fairly efficient mu- sicians who were able to read music. In ad- dition to this group the Madrigals was again organized. This specialized group was com- posed of I8 boys and girls who sang for many civic groups all over the Lockport-Joliet area at Christmas time. The group also accom- panied the band when it went to Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park to present. programs there. It also provided all the special music for the Christmas Play and other assemblies. The chorus as usual was a very active or- ganization. It participated in the Veterans Day Program and the traditional Baccalau- reate, entered a float in the homecoming parade which received an honorable mention, and 'put on a Penny Day for the March of Dimes. In December in conjunction with the band, it presented the annual music department dance, Snowflake Fantasy . This year is the fourth year the Edward F. kN'orst Club of the Future Teachers of Amer- ica. has been at L.T.H.S. under the able sponsorship of Mrs. Shoop. There were meet- ings on the first and third Thursdays of each month, one of which was a regular business meeting and the other a special program with a short business meeting. The past year has been quite a busy one for the club. It celebrated its anniversary hy 'hosting representatives from several nearby high schools in an effort to organize F.T.A. clubs in those schools. Many members at- tended the Regional kN'orkshop at Evergreen Park Iligh School and the State F.T.A. con- vention at Illinois State Normal University. They were guests at the Delta Kappa Gamma College Panel. Other activities the Future D 1 - . - Teachers participated in were: ushering at Teachers Institute, making posters for Educa- tion Week, going to Chicago on an educational field trip, participating in the homecoming parade, working in the concession stand at home football and basketball games, and var- ious other activities. -lunior and senior mem- bers did student teaching in local grade schools during a Visitation Day. This proved to be a. very fine experience for all and one which the group thought should be repeated. Se- niors occasionally subbed for teachers dur- ing a single period of the day. They enjoyed Teachers lnuest Time Wisely Officers: Patricia Moroz, Treasurer, Joann Miller, Secretary: Forrest A Hartman lgresidentg Phyllas Lillie, Vice-President, Glenda Schifler, Historian: Mrs Shoop ponsor. this very much and many found that it im- proved their understanding of the subject. F.T.A. members realized that the time spent this year learning about the teaching profession was an investment in their future. 87 urses Prepare for Future The Future Nurses Club, organized five years ago, has a membership of sixty-six. Miss Mar- garet Taylor is the faeulty adviser while Nfrs. Nlylon Lorenzen and Nfrs. Dorothy XN'orst, R. N., are sponsors, Nleetings are held regularly on the seeond and fourth 'l'hursdays of eaeh month. This year a surgieal nurse, practical nurse, physieal therapist. and a pharmacist spoke to the group and showed appropriate slides or movies. 'On November eighth the elub members cn- joyed their annual field trip, this year to Silver Cross Hospital in nloliet. On November thir- teenth the senior members took a field trip to Hines and Vaughan Hospitals in Chieago where the girls saw the latest equipment in physical therapy and were privileged to wateh an oper- ation. Among the projects of the club for the l956- :37 year were the eolleetion of materials and then making eaneer dressings, contributing to the March of Dimes, eheeking season tickets at the basketball games. and eheeking eoats at every other home game. Almost every girl at L.T.H.S. has belonged to at least one of the many sports activities offered by the G.A.A. For our expert servers, tennis and volleyball were given to test and improve their abilities. Also during the early fall horseback riding was offered, but this was open only to senior mem- bers. During winter months bowling, basketball, basket shooting and lifesaving were enthusiasti- cally attended by the girls. During the bowling season two separate groups each with three leagues, accommodating one hundred and fifty girls, were taken care of by the G.A.A. Basketball, also very popular among the girls, was set up so that each class had a separate night. At the end of the season, an Interclass Tournament and an All-Star Tournament were held. Basket shooting was also made available for girls who were especially accurate in their shots or wished to improve their shooting per- centage. Some of the girls in this group were able to enter the Telegraphic Basket Shooting Tournament held each year in the early spring. Besides learning skills and having fun, the girls were awarded pins and letters for all the time they spent in each activity. Points were given to them for each night they attended the sport to which they belonged. At the end of the year the total amount of points each person earned was tallied. In late spring at the A.n- nual Mother-Daughter Tea the awards were presented: A G.A.A. pin to girls with twenty- four points, first local for seventy-five points, second local for one hundred fifty points, first state award to those with two hundred twenty- five points and the second state award to those with three hundred points. Each year some of our willing, eager-to-help students volunteer their services to Miss Shep- herd. It is the duty of the ofhee assistants to eolleet the absence reports from the classes. Then the home of each absentee is telephoned by one ol the assistants. This year's tasks were ably performed by four girls. They again showed how another valuable service to the students and faculty of the school can be ac- complished efficiently. 103 i H 4' One of the most interesting and certainly most practical organizations at I,.'l'.ll.S. is the Lihrary Aide Club. Students with Bi, averages are preferred lor membership in the group. Be- ing a library aide requires that the student relin- quish a study hall in order that he may spend that period in the library. Library aides assist the librarian. The Library Aide Club with a membership of 20 was organized again second semester. President ol the club was Carole Sue tlohnsong vice-president, Phyllas Lillieg secretary. The story centered around the Gage family who lived in a very old house in Connecticut. After installing many modern conveniences in the house, the normal routine of the Gages was upset by the return of the former owners, the Roekwoods. The Roekwoocls had sold their house to the power company with the provision that they could return at any time. After the house had been sold to the Gages, the Rock- woods still insisted on coming to live there. The plot is further confused by the fact that old Jonathan Rockwood is thoroughly disgusted with the new additions to the house, especially the electricity and the modern privy.,' A con- flict follows between the old and the new. There is more excitement when, due to an emergency, young Matt Rockwood and Barbara Gage are forced to supposedly elope and both families are left in an uproar. Barbara and Matt returned to reveal that their mission was only an obstetrical ease. Front Row: Carole Johnson, Judy Long. econd Row: Wayne Barnett, .loan Boettcher, Gloria Miller, In the meantime Barbara's fiance had re- turned and finding Barbara gone, leaves, not knowing the real situation. However, the play ends happily as George and Barbara were re- united in a surprise ending with a reversal in the positions of both families. A special added attraction to Friday night's performance were twin baby goats who were later named January and Thaw by the owner. The cast spent a great deal of time in prepara- tion for the play, but the prop committee was also very busy locating an unusually strange array of props. Among the things found in their hunt were: a butter churn with flowers planted in it, a coffee grinder made into a lamp, a horse collar fno horsej, Hessian andirons, pewter and other antiques, including glassware, and a silent butler. The polished performers were delightful in their interpretations. The portrayals left the audience with a feeling that the time spent in watching the Senior play of l957 was used wisely. In the midst of all the hectic preparations, we took time out to meet in the auditorium where, through the combined efforts of over one hundred students under the direction of Mr. William Tipler and Mr. Ernest Caneva, the 1956 program was presented. Moderator Geraldine Wolfe introduced the Freshman-Sophomore Girls Glee Club which sang several Christmas selections. The story taken from Matthew, Luke and John, was read by three Senior speech students, Joanne Pluth, Rosemarie Mathers and Geraldine Wolfe. The highlight of the program was a short one-act play by Elizabeth McFadden, Why the Chimes Rang. The story centered around the ancient chimes of a nineteenth century city. It was said that these chimes would ring on Christmas if a worthy enough gift were offered. Jewels, money, treasures, and even a King's crown, which was thought to be the perfect gift, were offered, but the chimes did not ring. It was only when a young child offered all that he possessed, a few pennies, that the chimes pealed forth. The background music was supplied by the Madrigals. Organ music was played through- out the entire program by Judy Long. Imme- diately following the play the Madrigals enter- tained with Fred Waring's The Night Be- fore Christmasf' and other traditional Christ- mas Carols. bringing the program to a close with We Wish You a Merry Christmas. A salute to the armed forces by the high school band headed the Veteran's Day Program November twelfth. Immediately following the tribute, the U. S. Naval Reserve Unit from Joliet made the presentation of the colors. Mr. Earl Snyder came to the platform to make his welcoming speech after which the school band and chorus combined to present America, the Beautiful by Ward. Dr. Blatnik came to the microphone to introduce Com- mander R. W. Ricker, the guest speaker for the program. Starting the musical portion of the program was Mr. Tipler, head of the dramatics depart- ment who read the poem In Flanders Field by John McCrea and High Flight accom- panied by a musical background of the chorus singing Roses 'of Picardy by Wood and Beyond the Blue Horizon by Whiting and Harding. Taps were played and the choir sang My Buddy by Donaldson bringing the musi- cal portion of the program to an end. Mr. Tipler, with the choir in the background singing The Battle Hymn of the Republic by Staffe, read The Unknown Soldier Speaks. Two other programs were presented to the student body by outside organizations. The first was given by the Illinois Bell Telephone Com- pany. The diversified electronic equipment proved interesting to everyone, especially the Master Mind tic-tak-toe game. The other pro- gram was given during Fire Prevention Week and stressed home and farm Ere hazards. VETERAN'S DAY PROGRAM Commander R. W. Richer. Dr. William H. Blafnik, Mr. Earl Snyder, Rev. Portermites Soak Up Experience The Lockport Portermites. eoaehed by Mr. Gornik, posted one of their best records Q9-HJ in recent years as they defeated sueh vaunted South Suburban League powers as Bloom and Blue Island in their recent campaign. The high- light ol' their season came when they eaptured second place in the Carl Sandburg Frosh-Soph Basketball Tournament at the end of the regular season play. Their reeord lor the season. although not too enviable, showed vast improvement over the reeord of the previous season whieh Could well be attributed to the laet that the sweeping youth movement at L.'l',ll.S. is beginning to pay oil' in the form ol more vietories. The players, most ol' them having gained valuable experience dur- ing their lireslmian year, showed line spirit and determination throughout the season as they ,never stopped trying and always gave a fine aeeount of themselves on and ofl' the playing floor. As lar as statisties are Concerned the season was not too outstanding but the sportsmanship and teamwork gained by the underclassmen in the past season will prove invaluable to them in future years.
