A 'UEUIUATIUN , iN IVING a life that is indeed a full one, Mr. Edward F. Worst, retired educator, has contrilzuted much, directly and indirectly, to society. His teaching career, which fluctuated lnetween Wlill and Coole Counties, lzegan in the Alexander District in 1887. He has lneen Principal of the Eastern Avenue School in loliet lnow the Marsh Schooll, of the Francis Key, the Bancroft, and the Yale Schools in Chicago, and the loliet City Schools claimed him. as Superintendent for three years. Three years were also spent as a Chicago Teachers College lnstructor. He has supervised lnclustrial Arts in the Chicago Grade Schools and also its High Schools. Mitch of his time has lween spent liberally at Vaughn Hospital and at the Stateville Prison and, at present, he donates four days persweele in teaching Handicraft in two homes for elderly people in Hins- dale. ' Mr. Worst has laeen to Europe seven times, each time specializing in some type of Handicraft which accounts lor his outstanding lznowledge along that line. ln Septemlner, 1909, the Chicago Board of Education sent him to Germany to inspect schools for four months. lOl the European countries, he prefers Norway and Sweden., One can determine from the alaove that Mr. Worst's holnlny is Handie crafts. Eighteen years ago he helped found a Craft House, now the Edd ward F. Worst Craft House, in Penland, North Carolina, alaout sixty miles from Ashville. Although the lneginning ol this institution was minor, it grew so rapidly and proved so popular and worthwhile that now 125 people complete a course everv three weeles. He has been a memlzer of the Loclzport Grade School Board for forty- five years and of the High School Board for seventeen years, ten of which he has lneen President of the latter. lt can well lne seen that Mr. Worst has had few idle moments. To this civiceminded leader and highly respected citizen, we, the class of 1947, proudly dedicate mllhe l.oclQ.H erry Rose and Lois Wzird of0cLla0rf jownd ila mia in uf zere wr' As the hands of our Academic Clock hrought forth the morning hours, wc found approx' imzitcly 550 students entering the Lockport Township High School to continue their cycle of learning. September brings school, and September 1943 brought 165 of us as wondering freshmen to the study hall to elect Joe Broderick as our class president. World War II changed the pattern of numerous activities in our school life, for parties and frivolous things were on a priority. However, we got into the swing of things by joining the G.A.A.g FroshfSoph basketball, football, and baseballg chorus and band, and many took part in the operetta, Bits O' Blarney. As sophomores, we attended the Sham' rock Swirl, first junior Red Cross formal dance. Sports and music still topped the list of our activities. The major musical event of the year was the operetta, Tulip Time. Chuck Qrding was president of the class. As upperclassmen in 1946, we participated in more activities. The Carnival Cotillionf' junior Red Cross formal dance, saw many of our members in gala attire. Also, as juniors, enior Cfafid . . . we sponsored the juniorfSenior Prom, Swingf ing on a Star. Part of our class became the first junior Pen Wipers. The class play, Love Your Neighbor, filled in another block in our pattern of activity. In the GA.A. Volleyball and Basketball Intramural Contests, we came out champs Many of the boys constituted a big part of the varsity football, basketball, and baseball teams. To complete the days around the clock of our junior year, the seniors inf vited us to their picnic. Responsibilities came thick and fast in our senior year. Materiall had to be gathered for our monthly publication of The Times. Work on The Lock went on practically all year, that included the taking and mounting of picturesg writing captions, identifications, and literary articlesg proofreading, etc. Part of the fun came in the way of the J.R.C. formal dance, Autumn Serenade. A big event in thc year was the 0pen House for parents and friends. We seniors also had a share in the opcretta, Marianne Love Is Too Much Trouble, our senior play, topped the latr: spring activities. The -IuniorfSenior Prom fol- lowed that. Another part of any senior's life was choosing a class ring and invitations, and still to look forward to are the JuniorfSenior Picnic and Class Day. Thus we leave L.T.H.S. and all its pleasant memories, having completed our four years of around-thefclock life and hoping that the classes to follow will enjoy their clockwork years as much as we have. Organizations, clubs, athletics, and social events proved real fun and had their places on the clock when work was done and play had begun. They wcrc not the type that deadened interest but the type which developed stronger school spirit. The JLCL . ln an attempt to give you a true picture of life at L.T.H.S., The Lock has kept our sponsor, Miss Krusa, and us busy, but we'vc enjoyed every minute of our work, from writing captions and identifications, proofreading, mounting pictures, and sponsoring dances, down to just plain Nthinkin' and plannin '. We feel that it is one of the best books L.T.H.S. has published, and we hope you will cherish it in years to come for the memories it preserves. Cur Junior Pen Wipers have gained experience which will prove profitable when they begin to compile their '48 Lock, and they well deserve their share of credit for work which they've done. Cur yearbook, whose selling price was less than half the cost price, was financed mainly via book sales, school dances, and the coke machine.
