FOREWORD Fifty years ago a new publication, The Forum, appeared at Lockport Senior High School. In the classical age of high school education this title was a carefully selected one, harking back to the days when the Roman Forum was the cen- ter for the exchange of knowledge in the known world. The new publication offered the students a meeting place of minds. In 1907 The Forum, as a quarterly magazine, contained creative writing in the form of poetry, essays, and short stories. The cover featured a Roman column which was used for a number of years. In the june issue of the first year a senior section delineated the personalities, likes and dis- likes of the outgoing class. The passing of years brought changes to The Forum. The traditional cover design yielded to original efforts incorporating ideas of the various classes. Photography gained in importance with less emphasis placed on written material. In 1947 the quarterly issues were superseded by the annual yearbook, a memory book of the school year. The Towpath, a school newspaper, assumed some of the services hitherto performed by the quarterly. Today, The Forum staff takes pride in pre- senting its fifty-first consecutive issue, which through art work taken in part from earlier ed- itions, recalls the growth of journalism at Lock- port Senior High School. DEDIC At the beginning of the second fifty years of publication, it is appropriate to reflect for a mo- ment over the first fifty years. The purpose of the Forum was in 1907, and still is, to serve Lockport Senior High School as an oflicial pub- lication, reflecting the life and times within its walls. The first half-century of continuous publi- cation would have been possible only with the TIO dedicated efforts of the former advisers and editors. Therefore, appreciating these responsibilities, the staff of 1957 wishes to dedicate this edition of the Forum to another fifty years of service at L.S.H.S. It is their earnest hope that the future Forum staffs will continue to uphold the fine standards of journalism and service set by their predecessors.
