Some outstanding covers recall the past. y FOREWORD Fifty years ago a new publication, The Forum, appeared at Lockport Senior High School. In the classical age of high school education this title was a carefully selected one, harking back to the days when the Roman Forum was the cen- ter for the exchange of knowledge in the known world. The new publication offered the students a meeting place of minds. In 1907 The Forum, as a quarterly magazine, contained creative writing in the form of poetry, essays, and short stories. The cover featured a Roman column which was used for a number of years. In the june issue of the first year a senior section delineated the personalities, likes and dis- likes of the outgoing class. The passing of years brought changes to The Forum. The traditional cover design yielded to original efforts incorporating ideas of the various classes. Photography gained in importance with less emphasis placed on written material. In 1947 the quarterly issues were superseded by the annual yearbook, a memory book of the school year. The Towpath, a school newspaper, assumed some of the services hitherto performed by the quarterly. Today, The Forum staff takes pride in pre- senting its fifty-first consecutive issue, which through art work taken in part from earlier ed- itions, recalls the growth of journalism at Lock- port Senior High School. DEDIC At the beginning of the second fifty years of publication, it is appropriate to reflect for a mo- ment over the first fifty years. The purpose of the Forum was in 1907, and still is, to serve Lockport Senior High School as an oflicial pub- lication, reflecting the life and times within its walls. The first half-century of continuous publi- cation would have been possible only with the TIO dedicated efforts of the former advisers and editors. Therefore, appreciating these responsibilities, the staff of 1957 wishes to dedicate this edition of the Forum to another fifty years of service at L.S.H.S. It is their earnest hope that the future Forum staffs will continue to uphold the fine standards of journalism and service set by their predecessors. 3-Xfx.. 22 m ,, W g-WX gfgff 1 kk -.,.f 544215-A ll II Ie-ES-1u..2.0r Nl Ii lg F110 U roqum thttlule oi Ex ents Sthtml Opens September J Nmmn lllllg PI'CJgI'llD for Student Councll Ottober 1 C UIIIIIIIULIS Du Uttobcr I7 N tttrtm Du Nm cmbcr 17 D Nm timber 15 17 Ih1IlIx5glX1Ili, 'Nm ember 77 C I'lI'lSIIIICiS X ltntlon Detembcr L LX Rcgtnts XX eek mu Irs 71 2 4 I mtoln 5 Blrthd xx I ebru lrx btmor Pl tx Nl trth 79 -'O 'Xlnddlc SCICLB I x tluxtum Aprll CJFICIIIJIICJD D u Aprll 13 New X ork btltc IXILISIC I'e5t1x xl NI u 74 75 C I155 Du vnth umor Prom 'NIH 'N IIIUFIII Dlx Nl xx w0 sl SLIIIOI' PILIIIL unc 6 B ttt tltxure ttf. unc 7 4 C ommentemcnt I xer4.15c5 une 7 Table of Qontents XIJXIINISTR XTION XND I KCI IIN I5 nrd of I'tIutll1un P1g.,e 5llPLI'lI'lI6I'ICIf,I1I Xssmtmt Suptrmttncicnt Iltx me C Ilss Stu L U :tt Sturt Custom I S tm CI XSSIS SLHIUI Ofhtus Stnmrs lunmr Offltcrs uname Nuplmnmrt Clfhu. Pvnn P. XY'ightman I.. Culver. B. Stockwell XY. Ifll's. Let's look behind the scenes in the publishing of the Towpath , our school paper, which ap- pears in the Union Sun and journal every other Saturday. Here in the publications room we see NY'right Ellis, editor-in-chief, and Miss Leona XY'esley, chief adviser. They supervise all the activities of The Towpath staff. First of all Patricia XY'ight- man, News and Features Iiditor, hands out assign- ments to the reporters with a warning that the ar- ticles must be handed in by the deadline . Pat makes sure that enough articles have been assign- ed to fill up the page. Now that the Towpath has a full page in the l'nion-Sun and journal, in- stead of half page, the work has been doubled. In spite of this, everyone is much happier with the present arrangement. Now articles are in, and Marjorie Iiricks the copy editor, checks them for any errors that have been overlooked by the reporters. When the copy is ready for the typist Beverly Stockwell makes certain that all copy is typed neatly. An electric typewriter has been purchased this year to speed up typists' work. Bev gives the copy to Linda Culver, technical editor, who counts the words and judges the length of the article. The stories are now ready to go to the newspaper office. Last but not least, we can't forget the all American favorite , pictures. john Deho and his magic shutter supply these essential parts of the paper. However, all the work isn't finished. Karen Keep, managing editor, and her layout staff still must plan the placement of the articles and pic- tures and write the headlines so that the paper is laid out just the wav it will appear in the Ifnion-Sun and journal. Proof that this work has been well done, came when the 'I'owpath won the Columbia Medalist Award. It was one of ten papers which won Hrst place in the United States. .va V Q . , - ,- I .tt A -4 .35 ich? x Y T- 7 1' - ,Q --' - ,., . . fl ' ii ' i ' - ' L' L. It concerned the trials of a high school secretary as the real principal is captured and the crooks take over the school for two days. THE PIA The Thespian Society is an honorary group composed of veteran members of play casts, chosen on the basis of hours of participation in dramatics. Mary Buckholtz was the one Play, The Southwest Comer, member this year at presstime. ALL CHOOL PLAY The All-School Play was entitled The Southwest Corner, and featured Virginia Dawson, Mary Buck- holtz, and Herbert Newmann. The plot was concern- ed with the efforts of an unscrupulous woman to take away the possessions of a harmless old lady. Her plans, however, were foiled, because as she at- tempted to open the door to the room known as the Southwest Corner, she died of a heart atack. It was presented November 29th and 50th, di- rected by Mr. James Pletcher with student assistant, Sue Schmidt. . . .
