FOOTBALL VARSITY FOOTBALL The Lockport High School Football Lions ended the 1953 season with a record of three wins and five defeats. Charles Hopper Kennedy who resumed his former job as head football coach was assisted by Foster Hoff, line coach, and Vic Cleri, backfield coach. The Blue and Gold iarred the Lackawanna Steelers in the first game of the seasow I3-6. Lockport's first score came in the first quarter when Jim Dempsey's kick was fumbled on the Lackawanna I5 yard line by Barry Steele. Mike Madden tossed an aerial to Steele for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was no good. After a Lackawanna score by La Chance the Lions started another drive climaxed by Madden's pass to Jim Dempsey who raced into the end zone. Sam Burkhardt split the uprights with the extra point kick. A hard fighting but outclassed Lockport squad bowed to a strong team from Jamestown I9-O on October 3rd, Then on October IOth the Lions were handed a jarring upset from Trott Vocational I2-7. However this ugly blight was erased from the record books later on in the season as all of Trott's games were nullified. Extra point for Sam Burkhardt. The team hit their stride against the La Salle Explorers Novem- ber l4th as they picked up a 28-26 victory. The team took advantage of every break, their tackling was sharp, the blocking was crisp, and it all added up to their best performance of 1953. Dave Webster broke away on the first play from scrimmage and dashed 58 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was missed. Stakel tallied on a quarter back sneak after a sustained drive. Again the extra point attempt failed. The Lions picked up an automatic safety when a bad pass from the La Salle center landed in the end zone. Dave Webster scored again in the second half as he crashed off tackle and galloped 7I yards for the touchdown. Sam Burk- hardt converted the point. Bob Godfrey recovered a blocked La Salle punt in the end zone for another six pointer and Burkhardt toed the point again. Sixteen Lions ended their grid careers for Lockport in the Kenmore game. They were: Ronnie Sanford, John Cocco. Vern Hornquist, Dick Kibler, Lowell Brinnen, Sam Burkhardt. Mike Schultz, Bill Barnard, Bob Boetcher, Dick Sherman, Gordy Dent, Bob Godfrey, Allan Van De Mark, Duane Rupple, Elwood Clark and John Stakel.
