'By that time Captain Haldeman's son-in-law, James C. Richardson, had taken over active management of the business. The Company continued to grow and acquire more property and install more and better equipment until it owned two mills in Lockland, the Upper lNIill which was the original mill and the Lower Mill which was located near the present plant and later sold to the Phillip Carey Manufacturing Company. By this time Mr. Richardson's sons were growing up and one by one they took an active part in running the business, which was then one of the largest business establishments in the then Village of Lockland. In 1907 the management of the Company saw an opportunity to get into the boxboard business so the present Lockland Plant was planned, built, and has been operating ever since. It was the first electrically operated paper mill in the country and was the last word in plant and equipment. In 1913 after the disastrous flood of that year, the Company acquired the plant and equipment of the Reynolds Paper Box Company and thereby got into the Folding Paper Box business which helped fur- nish an outlet for the NI1ll s paperboard production Later on ln 1917 the Company built and equipped a complete prepared asphalt roofing plant which furnished an outlet for our felt mill production and contributed immensely to the supply of the fast grow ing asphalt roofing lndustrx In 1932 the Richardson Company sold its entire boxboard and folding carton interests fthe Lockland Plantb to the Gardner Han ev Company at lNI1ddletown at which time The Gardner Richardson Com pany was established The present Company is a typical example of an industry properlv managed which has grown from a wery small to a large concern while still retaining its interest and responsibility for the welfare of its employees and the communities in which it operates AERI AI Y IEW PREbENT GARDNER RICHARDSONI PLANTT C ontnbuted by GARDNER RICH -XRDSON COMPANY Il . . , .
