86 YOUNG GOLFERS PUTT FOR GLORY Golf is an individual sport that requires a player to be en- tirely responsible for his own success or failure. The object is to put the ball into eighteen holes, us- ing the least number of strokes. Dad Miller ' s Golf Course was once again used as the site of most matches. Daily, the Saxons practiced various strokes and also practiced how to deal with challenging terrain and ob- stacles, such as sand traps, thick grass, water hazards, dips, and trees. The slice and hook were two strokes the players were en- couraged to practice. Lacking sen- iors, freshman Young Chun and ju- niors Andrew Harvey and Richard Basquez led this year ' s young team. The 1989 Saxon Golf Team, front: Mark Knock, Young Chun, Andrew Harvey. Cur tis Gardener, back: Jeff Guy. Jason O ' sulli- van. Kalen Taylor, and Richard Basquez. After a backswing and downswing, Curtis demonstrates his great follow through. Young grins as his chip shot make the first hole. Young s short loft and overspin on the ball allowed for a short run to the cup. Positioned in a square stance, Jeff prepares to putt the ball toward the eighth hole. Jeff also concentrates to keep the trunk of his body motionless, so that the ball will roll rather than skip toward the hole. Rich maintains his balance, while concen- trating on the backward swinging motion. Jason demonstrates his position of the hands on the golf club that contributes to a sound golf swing. five
