The 1988-89 season proved to be a fantastic year for Boys ' Cross Country at Loara. In addition to the honors giv- en to Loara ' s team as a whole, many runners on the team received individual awards. Jose Pineda came in first place at League Finals after setting a league record and course record for running three miles in 17.08 minutes. The varsity team was led by runners Miguel Ga- lindo and Efren Jaime, who helped the team to achieve third place at the Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach Invitationals and second place at the Pacifica and Costa Mesa Invitationals. As a whole, the varsity team came in fourth place, the jv team tied for first place, and the frosh soph team placed second in league finals. , Bart Schafer concentrates on his running strategy. 2. During the season, the girls ' cross country runners consis- tently pushed themselves to do better. Their coach, Dave Smith, gave them guidance and support through- out the season. At the Pacifica Invita- ional, Dawn Bowman tinished third and Maria Fuentes tinished tourth out ot a total of seventy-five runners. At a meet in which Loara beat Eldorado, Teresa Reeves came in fourth, and Kel- ly Graton finished fifth. At all meets, Dawn Bowman and Maria Fuentes fin- ished in the top five. At their banquet, Maria Fuentes received an award for most valuable runner and Dawn Bow- man received the Coaches ' Award. The team finished the season with a one and four record, but the record doesn ' t always show the true effort put forth by the team. CROSS COUNTRY 70
