72 TENNIS TEAMS TOPSPIN TO VICTORY This past tennis season saw much improvement over last year. Many new members were added to cre- ate a strong team — among them were Jason Overell (Freshman) and Mike Na (from Minnesota). The coach described the team as one with good skills but as having a lack of confidence in those skills (Isn ' t that humble!) It was Coach Gary Cleveland ' s first year coaching the Boys ' Tennis Team. His goals for the team were to improve the skills of each player and to move towards a positive attitude. Both were achieved according to Andy Huang: We ' re giving it 110% this year. ( If not more. added James Lewis.) The positive aspects of the team were their real desire to improve and their willingness to listen. Consisting of mainly freshmen and sophomores, this year ' s JV Tennis Team was extremely young, hard working, and dedicated. Coach Tom Meylor comment- ed, This team contains a tremendous amount of raw talent. Throughout the year, the players improved their tech- nique, in turn strengthening the team. Outstanding members this year were sin- gles player Matt Ham. doubles players Howard Chang Simon Chang and David Shy, Darmesh Patel. tour five

88 TENNIS TAKES A TOPSPIN TURN This year ' s Varsity Tennis Team became a vital com- petitor in the Empire League. The girls improved greatly due to the number of hours of hard and demanding work they put into their practices. In Kim Yo- shioka ' s whipping forehand or quick volley, Jody Wilkens ' crushing serve, or Krinon Lapihuska ' s instant backhand, one can see the intense level of play on the Varsity Team. Coached by Gary Cleaveland, the girls finished the season with a much improved record of 5-9. Kim Yoshioka, a member of the Varsity Team for four consecutive years, received the Most Valuable Player Award. This year ' s JV Tennis Team practiced two hours every day. The daily exercises included running, technique, and shuffling. Al- though the season was not succesful in terms of wins and losses, the girls continually played with spirit and enthusi- asm. Under the guidance of Jeanette Cleaveland, each player gave her best to help the JV Team succeed by contributing her time and effort. t four five
