68 V. VOLLEYBALL REACH THEIR GOAL ' e have proven what hard work and determination can do. This is how the 1988-89 Varsity Volleyball Team described their victorious year. With a seriousness of purpose they continually strove for perfection. This pursuit of excel- lence on the court lasted the entire season. Many congratulations went to the team when their hard work took them to the CIF Championships. With an unfortunate loss in their second game, they were eliminated from the tournament. However, making the CIF play-offs in addition to their much improved record brought much pride to Loara. The team, composed of strong, confident players with many di- verse talents and skills, performed solidly throughout the season. Coach Mike Hinton described the team in the following words: With the young players and the experience of the older ones, I think we play well as a unit. The power of the outside attack and the versatility of the players made for a really good season. four

70 JV F S VOLLEYBALL PLAY TOUGH! three Much recognition should be directed towards the JV and Frosh Soph volleyball teams for their outstanding per- formance this year. The JV team struggled through a frustrating first half; yet with exceptional leadership from Liza Soldivillo, Angie Cox and Adena Woodman, the talented team overpowered and dominated their opponents with an impressive 8-8 record at the end of the season. First year Coach Tom Honda stated, I didn ' t know what to expect! The season was a fun and worthwhile experience for all of us. The Frosh Soph Girls couldn ' t have been a more deserving team as they received their first place trophies. Going in as the under- dog, the girls, with enthusiasm, energy, and spark, played to their full potential to emerge as victors. Coach Debbie Wheeler ad- mitted, The girls were dedicated. Each member contributed to this trophy. They all had the skill and talent to win; but more important, I think that they had the determination and strong desire thcit it takes to win. Both of the teams showed a tremendous amount of improve- ment during the course of the exhausting season, promising a positive note for future years.
