u N — ' icknames like Aqua-Jock, fish, and Aquamen were commonly used to describe the 1988-89 Varsi- ty Water Polo Team. This year ' s team played hard and as tough as any land jocks, swam fast and swift as fish, and played courageously as aquamen. This year ' s team con- sisted of five returning varsity players: Brian Blacketer, Dong Kim, Billy Kang, James Lim, and Howard Zimmerman. The team also had five members of last year ' s J.V. squad to fill many important positions. The team began practice during the summer and entered the season with pride and confidence. Unfortunately, the team had difficulty winning this season and ended with a winless record. However, a few players were recognized for their achievements. Darrow Linder received MVP award for his excellence at the goalie position, Brian Blacketer was the top scor- er, Scott Talkovic received the coach ' s award for his hard work, and Kelly Cooley received the most improved award. -• »- eight 1. 66 1988 WATER POLO ENCOUNTERS A DIFFICULT SEASON IN EMPIRE LEAGUE Playing to gain experience, the first-year polo players played their hearts out. With only two returning members, Adrian Stin- gaciu and Chris Allred, the team suffered in the beginning; but after a little practice, the team was ready to begin its battles. Practicing day and night (literally), the team gradually progressed each and every day. Coach Broski, being the head coach for both Varsity and JV teams, had one heck of a time coaching both teams at once. Having a job during the day and coming to coach a bunch of sixteen- year-olds in the evening showed a lot of dedica- tion on Coach Broski ' s part. For the second year, the water polo team had girls on the team; and this year, there were six girls on the Frosh-Soph Team. Though the girls were polite on the pool deck, they were very dangerous in the water. With outstanding freshmen, experienced play- ers, and a dedicated coach, the JV Frosh-Soph Team was a family of happy Saxons. two ,T iK three
