58 LHS VARSITY TEAM THRILLS SAXONS The Saxon Varsity Football Team began the season with tew returning starters and many inexperienced players; however, the Saxons opened with four straight victories. Loara took advantage ot eight Western turnovers in winning the first game 26-8. Ricky Griego ran an interception back for a touchdown late in the game to .break a scoreless tie as the Saxons next defeated Anaheim 12-0. Against Canyon, a swarming defense and pinpoint passing by Jeff Gordon enabled the Saxons to rip the Comaches 26-0. Loara next travelled to Lakewood and crushed the Lancers 30- for the team ' s third consecutive shutout. El Modena upset Loara 19-7 in the final non-league game. Loara opened league against Cypress in the Saxon ' s Homecoming game. The game ended in a tie 0-0 when junior Brett Banta ' s punt return for a touchdown was called back by a penalty. The Saxons next lost a heartbreaker to El Dorado as Randy Halcomb was knocked out of bounds inside the one-yard line as time ran out. The Valiant comeback came up a little short. Loara defeated Esperanza 23-0 in the next league game to keep playoff hopes alive. Coy Collins, a Junior, returned to the lineup after missing two games because of a leg injury. The Saxons lost to eventual league champion Los Al 20-0, setting up a playoff showdown against arch- rival Katella in the last game of the season. In the most exciting game of the season, the Saxons began the game with a bang as Brett Banta ran the opening kickoff back for a touchdown. After a Katella turnover Jeff Gordon hit Adrian Oliphant with a touchdown pass to give the Saxons an early 14-0 lead. Later in the first quarter, Sean Conner and Brett Banta hooked up for the longest touchdown pass in Loara ' s history (81 yards) on a fake punt to give the Saxons a 20-7 first quarter lead. Both teams settled down and the game was decided on the last play when a Loara free-kick field goal attempt went just wide. Loara finished the season with a 5-4- 1 record.
