Presi- dent Ronald Reagan and Soviet Leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev worked for several years to bring the two countries together, and in 1988, Mikhail Gorbachev visited the United States as a gesture of the growing friendship between the Russians and Americans. In addition, Russian and American rescuers cut through the ice in Alaska to save two California gray whales. Terrorism, which was a major concern of the Reagan administration, continued to be an international dilemma. All of the passengers and crew of Pam Am flight 103 were killed as a result of a terrorist bomb. There was also the devastating earthquake in Soviet Armenia, which took over 25,000 lives. 1968-89 proved to be a successful year in the music industry. With new bands emerging all the time, the great musicians of the past found it to be a struggle to make a comeback. However, Van Haien and the former members of Led Zeppiin. Robert Plant and Jimmy Page, proved this theory to be wrong, as they climbed up the ladder to musical success once again. This year was not only the year of the comeback, but the year of Rock and Roll and the year that bands such as Guns ' N ' Roses, Metailica. REM.
