HE OFTEN SWAM ON THE VARSITY SQUAD. THIS YEAR THE SAXONS WERE COACHED BY GREG SMITH AND KURT NEILSON. THE TWO PROVIDED THE GUIDANCE AND LEAD- ERSHIP NEEDED FOR THE TEAM TO KEEP ON TOP. TO HELP THE TEAM ALONG, THEIR ADORABLE MASCOT, BEETHOVEN CA.K.A. SPUDSD, CHEERED THE TEAM ON THROUGH- OUT THE SEASON. HEY, WHO NEEDS CHEER- 'P LEADERS. DESPITE HAVING ONLY I7 MEMBERS, THE TEAM DID EXTREMELY WELL, NOT ONLY AS A TEAM, BUT AS INDIVIDUALS. MANY INDI- VIDUAL RECORDS WERE SET. IN ADDITION, SEVERAL SCHOOL RECORDS WERE ALSO SET. EVEN THOUGH THE SWIMMING SEASON STARTED IN FEBRUARY, THE TEAM BEGAN THEIR TRAINING IN SEPTEMBER. THE TEAM PRAC- TICED RIGOROUSLY EACH DAY. THESE PRACTICES LASTED UP TO THREE HOURS. BESIDES THEIR REGULAR AFTER-SCHOOL WORKOUTS, THEY WORKED OUT IN THE MORNING. THEIR DEDICATION AND DILI- GENCE GAVE EACH MEMBER THE EXTRA EDGE NEEDED TO WIN RACES. THE VARSITY TEAM CONSISTED OE HIGH- LY TALENTED INDIVIDUALS. MIKE CONN WAS SUPERB IN THE BUTTERFLY. ROBERT SALLEY EXCELLED AS THE SPRINTER OF THE TEAM. WITH DAN CULLINANE AS HEAD COACH AND IOAN HOWLAND AS ASSIS- TANT, THE SWIMMERS HAD OUTSTAND- ING INSTRUCTION AND TALENT. THIS YEAR THE TEAM CONCENTRATED ON THE FOUR MAIOR STROKES: BREAST, BUTTER- FLY, FREESTYLE, AND BACKSTROKE. AT EACH WORKOUT THE GIRLS AIMED AT INCREASING THEIR SPEED AND ENDUR- ANCE.
