MOCK FLOCK 1Ve VW' D SPEECH TEAM EXCEL TWO OF LOARA'S ACADEMIC TEAMS, MOCK TRIAL AND SPEECH, SPARKLED THIS YEAR WITH THE ORATURICAL TALENT OF THEIR MEMBERS. BOTH TEAMS GAVE LOARA STUDENTS A CHANCE TO DISPLAY THEIR SPEAKING SKILLS AND TO THINK ON THEIR FEET. BOTH TEAMS EXPERIENCED GREAT SUCCESS IN THEIR COMPETITIONS AGAINST OTHER ORANGE COUNTY SCHOOLS. THE MOCK TRIAL IS A COURTROOM SIMULATION IN WHICH STUDENTS AS- SUME THE ROLES OF LAWYERS AND WITNESSES. THE MEMBERS OF THE TEAM, LED BY COACH RICHARD BARRON, SPENT COUNTLESS HOURS STUDYING THIS YEARS CASE OF PEOPLE VS. CORONEL, A CASE BASED ON A SHOOTOUT IN THE CALIFORNIA GOLD FIELDS OF IE-351. THE TEAM WAS HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL AND WAS VICTORIOUS IN EACH ROUND OF THE COUNTY-WIDE COMPETITION. LOARA'S SPEECH TEAM, ABLY LED BY MISS CATHERINE IOSEPH, ALSO ACHIEVED GREAT SUCCESS. VARIOUS LOARA SPEAKERS WERE VICTORIOUS AT COUNTY TOURNAMENTS AND COMPETITIONS SPONSORED BY LOCAL SERVICE CLUBS. LOARA SPEAKERS WERE REPRESENTED AT NEARLY EVERY COMPETITION, AND THEY WON NUMEROUS TROPHIES AND CASH PRIZES. THE SUCCESS OF BOTH TEAMS PROVED THAT THEIR EXTRA WORK AND EF- FORTS PAID OFF AS THEY ACHIEVED THEIR ORIGINAL GOALS SET AT THE BEGIN- NING OF THE YEAR. l I One -f three THE CREATIVE WRITING CLUB, UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF MRS. DAVIS, MET AT LUNCH. STU- DENTS BROUGHT EXAMPLES OF THEIR OWN ORIGINAL WRITING AND READ THEM TO THE OTHER MEMBERS. IN ADDITION, THE CLUB OPER- ATED AS A CLEARING HOUSE OF INFORMATION FOR VARIOUS WRITING CONTESTS. THIS YEAR, MRS. DAVIS'S CREATIVE WRITING CLUB HAD THE FORTUNATE OPPORTUNITY OF PARTICIPATING IN THE CALIFORNIA YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS PROIECT. THE YOUNG PLAY- WRIGHTS PROIECT GAVE STUDENTS THE CHANCE TO CREATE THEIR OWN ONE-ACT PLAYS AND WORK WITH PROFESSIONAL ACTORS AND PLAYWRIGHTS. STUDENTS WERE INSTRUCTED IN IMPROVISATIONAL ACTING, CREATIVE SCENE SET-UPS, AND CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. EACH STUDENT WAS ASKED TO CAST AND DI- RECT A SCENE FROM HIS OWN PLAY. THAT PROVED TO BE INTERESTING. THAT PROVED TO BE VERY INTERESTING, SAID MIKE PROCOPIO, ONE OF THE STUDENTS WHO TOOK PART IN THIS EVENT. THE YOUNG PLAYWRIGHTS PROIECT LASTED ALL DAY AND WAS VERY HELPFUL TO THOSE WHO PARTICIPATED. l. Hilary Bull and Lizzie Myers improvise during the Young PI 1 'wiki' lit- ev ant Ly srl 5 . vc . 2.
