LAST APRIL, ABOUT FORTY GIRLS TRIED OUT FOR A SPOT ON THE VARSI- TY CHEERLEADING SOUAD. THE COM- PETITION WAS TOUGH, AND PROFES- SIONAL IUDGES MADE ALL THE GIRLS NERVOUS. FINALLY, THE TWELVE MOST SPIRITED, DEDICATED, AND TAL- ENTED GIRLS WERE SELECTED. THIS YOUNG GROUP CONSISTED OF SEN- IORS STACI MIYAGISHIMA, SHANNON DESROCHES, SALLY IMAMURA, ARIANNE GLAGOLA, IESSICA RAPPA- PORT AND IUNIORS TORI LOFFLER, MI- CHELE TREANOR, SHERYN LIPPIN- COTT, STACY SCHUERINGS, AND SOPHOMORES ELLEN KAO, YVETTE BRINK AND NICOLE CONNER. THE SQUAD STARTED EARLY BY PRACTICING OVER THE SUMMER AND ATTENDING THE CHEER CAMP IN SAN- TA BARBARA. AT THE CAMP, THE GIRLS LEARNED NEW CHEERS AND COMPETED AGAINST OTHER SCHOOLS. THEY WERE AWARDED WITH FOUR SUPERIOR RIBBONS, A SPIRIT STICKER, AND A TROPHY, TEAM MEMBER ARIANNE GLAGOLA COM- MENTED ABOUT THEIR SUCCESS: I BE- LIEVE OUR SUCCESS HAS SET TRENDS FOR THE FUTURE VARSITY SOUADS, AND I'M PROUD OF WHAT WE AC- COMPLISHED THIS YEAR. UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MS. WARD, THE CHEERLEADERS DEVEL- OPED NEW ROUTINES FOR ASSEM- BLIES AND COMPETITIONS. TEAM CAPTAIN STACY SCHUERINGS SAID, I BELIEVE THIS YEAR'S VARSITY CHEER SQUAD HAD THE MOST SPIRIT AND DEDICATION EVER. ALL THE HARD WORK AND LONG HOURS PAID OFF. THANKS TO THE WHOLE VARSITY SQUAD.
