Entering the halls for the first time ... Janet Newcomb, Barr Bailey, Julia Brandis, Jill Dynia, Craig Burke, Toni Thomason. New Seniors Fear Eating Alone just knew that | was going to die in a mass of hungry teenagers; not from being trampled, though the possibil- ity was real, but rather from embarrassment. | had made it through my first five classes with my dignity intact; yet, how could | survive this, the word that struck many new students with the force of a brick wall — lunch! Who would | eat with, or would | have to sit alone? This was ri- diculous. | was a senior, but | was acting like a freshman about to be sacrificed to the upperclassmen gods. ‘‘l hate being new as a senior,”’ | griped to myself. The perfect senior year fizzled before my eyes. Moving to a new high school can be a traumatic ex- perience. Being uprooted dur- ing your senior year is worse. Many new seniors arrived at L.C. Bird this year with trepida- tion and fear. When Barr Bai- ley came to school that first day she felt like ‘‘a worm ina sea of caterpillars.”” New sen- iors feel that they have to make an outstanding first im- pression. ‘‘l felt like everyone was staring at me,” recalls Jill Dynia. Though new seniors are scared and anxious, a new school provides an opportuni- ty to re-establish oneself. ‘‘l liked being able to start over; to wipe the slate clean,” ex- plains Julia Brandis.
